I usually love everything about Costco but their optical department(not the optometrist) is less than stellar. I faxed them my prescription since that’s the only they accept them, then you have to order in-person and then go back 3 – 5 days later to pick up. Not only is this process archaic, but the staff at this particular Costco doesn’t do anything to make up for it. They had crappy attitudes. I stood in the dept for about 10 minutes before being acknowledged and then was told to take a loop around the store since it would be «a while» before I would be served. When I came back they were equally as annoyed as when I came in the first place. I’ll just go somewhere else for contacts. It’s not worth the hassle.

Same glasses and prescription. Target’s price: $ 350+. Costco’s price: $ 160. SOLD! Great selection. Designer frames are still pretty darn cheap. Very easy process. No hard selling. Upgrades available for thinner lenses or Transitions lenses. The Costco rep named Connie was a HUGE help and VERY friendly! The others working there — not so much.(They were actually pretty crabby.)

After seeing the story on 20/20, I knew I was buying my new glasses from Costco. The frame selection includes lots of designers plus they have men’s, women’s and children’s frames. I made my selection and they promised to call when they arrived. I got an automated call about a week later and they were ready. The gentleman working there selected the sunglass clips that best matched my new frames and I was out the door in no time. The last pair of glasses I purchased cost me nearly $ 800.00 plus an exam. I paid less than $ 200.00 for frames, lenses, sunglass clips, and the exam by Dr. Mills next door to the Costco entrance. I also chose designer frames. I’ve learned my lesson with the optical business after seeing the WHOLE story on 20⁄20. The monopoly by Luxotica…(they own the frame companies, many of the retail optical shops and the optical insurance companies)…is costing Americans far too much for their optical needs. Costco also carries contact lens and the man in front of me said he and his wife always buy them there because they are so much less expensive. You do need a Costco membership to buy glasses and contacts but it would be worth buying even if you never shopped in the store… which is doubtful that you would not do that. I love Costco and my new glasses… and the hundreds of $$$$$$$$ that I saved!
