Texas Humane Heroes

The worst experience ever. I went and adopted a cat there. Took it home and a week later it got sick. Took it to the vet with medical records. The vet then informed me the cat tested positive for leukemia at one time. Then later negative. Now I’m being told it needs to be tested in six months. I called The director Ron Marullo at Texas Humane and asked why I wasn’t informed of the medical history and just got a sorry. I asked him to retest the cat be he would not do that. He just said alls he can do is take it back. I explained the cat was now a member of the family but he stood firm. Between him and his managers I got 2 different stories about the cat. I just cannot believe the way they handled this situation. They caused much pain in my families hearts. Do not support this horrible «non profit «establishment. They do not do the right thing to rectify a bad situation! Went to 4 different vets not affiliated and they said the kitten should have not been adopted. Awful people! Please contact me with any questions you may have.

DO NOT GO HERE IF YOU HAVE ANY INTENTION OF DECLAWING YOUR ADOPTED CAT OR KITTEN. You are a horrible human being if you would ever even think of doing this, apparently.
Extremely disappointing experience attempting to adopt a kitten today. We spent an hour and a half bonding with a kitten, deciding to adopt her, only to be told after filling out a form with our personal information that we could not have the kitten based on our answer to a declawing question. In my opinion, the employee that «assisted us» with the form and the questioning (somewhat akin to an interview by law enforcement) was condescending and belittling and had no empathy for us once we had to leave empty-​handed. I have had cats all my life, all declawed, and all with no behavioral or bladder/​bowel issues after declawing.
My 11 year old daughter is still crying 2 hours later. We will no longer offer any future monetary or volunteer support to this organization. At least be up-​front that you are prejudiced against specific practices that are fairly common for pet owners to choose to do for their pets. It would have saved us a TON of time and heartache. We were prepared to offer a loving, comfortable environment in our home for this adorable kitten — she would have been fawned over and loved and more than well taken care of. It was a heartbreaking experience.
As a side note — their facilities smell horrendous and the area housing the cats should probably be condemned. If they think they’re being humane to these animals, they’re mistaken. Some investment in infrastructure is completely needed — especially something to help with the air flow and air quality inside of the dilapidated old house the cats are housed in.

To the naysayers: Please quit complaining.

Spend some time volunteering there, donate funds, donate supplies… be a part of the SOLUTION. Think of it as more than a place to find a wonderful furry friend, it’s much more than a one-​time adoption.
Do it for the love of animals. They need advocates.
Always clean when I drop off items, volunteers always busy but always nice. Setting up auto-​debit to donate monthly is SUPER EASY. Try it!

After reading a lot of reviews I was very skeptical if I should check this place but I’m really glad I did. I do agree with some other reviews about the staff being a bit off but everything went very smoothly for me. I went in (wasn’t busy) got help easily, put the dog on hold ($ 10 for 24 hours) and came back the next day and picked her up! It was very easy.
I haven’t taken her to the vet yet (got her a few days ago) but I’m really hoping she doesn’t have any worms like the other reviews are saying. If she does I will do an updated review.
I recommend checking this place out, they had a lot of great dogs.

I will start off by stating I adopted my sweet little shelter dog from this facility. Wonderful dog and my family loves her and truly enjoys what she brought to our family. Now for the review and I think I will make a list.
1) the people they hire or that volunteer are often dirty and not because they are handling dogs. I haven’t met one person at the facility or at adoption day at petsmart that knows anything about dogs and 9 times out of 10 they are rude and have hardly any people skills at all. BAD, I MEAN REAL BAD!
2) They tell u adopting 2 dogs or brother and sister is not allowed and harmful to the pets development. I asked all 3 vets at première animal clinic and heart of Texas emergency if that was true and all 4 said horse shit, not true and borderline silly.
3) The dog I adopted was fixed at 7 weeks, way too early.
4) my puppy had a bad case of worms and was supposed to be treated
5) The people that work for this place just aren’t nice so it just rubs u the wrong way. Plus the facility and people are dirty.
It’s not the dogs fault so the get 2 stars but if it was just based on the facility and people it would be a Zero!

My husband I rescued a sweet puppy from here and a week later we found that she had hook worms. When I called to tell them they informed me that they only do one round of dewormer and don’t do a second. When I told the lady I now had to have my yard treated she dismissed me with a «do you have any other questions». I received a crap apology and then the lady hung up on me. So I rescued a puppy that they said had been dewormed and wasn’t. I find this to be a bit misleading.

I love this place because it is spacious and no kill. THH is right down the street from our house and we have gotten two pets from this location. Our first pet is a cat who we got years ago. My kids and I spent literally hours in the cat area looking at and petting kittens and adult cats. The staff left us be and were happy to leave us to visit with all the cats. We ended up with a sweet small adult who had a crumpled up ear due to having had ear mites at some point (she did not get them there, they treated her for them when she came in). What some people would see as a deformity we all saw as adorable and it ended up being the reason we took her home. The process was easy and quick to adopt.
Our other pet is a chihuahua who we got last year. Again, we spent probably a couple of hours with him, walking him around the grounds there (I didn’t want a yipper that barked at every little thing…) again, they left us be and we had plenty of time to check out all the dogs and spend time with this one. My husband brought our other dog up to see how they reacted to each other, which is nice — so you don’t end up with a dog your other dog hates. Everything went equally well with this adoption. I am one to always notice things out of place or untidy, but this shelter was clean and well kept the many times we have been there (we have been a couple of times just because my kids wanted to go check out what they had and we didn’t leave with an animal.) I think they do a good job here, and I have never had any problems, on the contrary I have always felt the animals were well cared for and given lots of love.

I appreciate what they do. I truly do, which is why We went there in hopes to adopt a puppy. Sure, we could go to a puppy mill and get a full breed but because we believe and encourage pet adoption we wanted to give one a loving and caring home. With that, I will write about my experience with them and i know this isn’t going to be everyone’s situation.
THEY ARE NOT KID FRIENDLY!!! and If i could change the font to big bold red, underlined, flashing lights, I would.
and from the looks of it, I highly doubt they will let us adopt a puppy because we have small children.
This situation could have been easily avoided and also handled in a professional manner instead my 4 year old left crying thinking he did something wrong. When HE DIDN’T, and I am one to call out his behavior. He is a 4 year old playing with a puppy, SUPERVISED mind you. Everything seemed normal, the puppy was responding in a positive form to my son. Out of nowhere one of the girls working there just barges in the playroom and rips the puppy away from my son. Saying she can’t accept his behavior. She had already screamed at him because he accidentally ran into the cage, excited to see the puppy that we had picked to play with. Just poor taste, you don’t scream at someone’s kid. especially when the parent is right there and has already addressed the accident. Then we take the puppy to their provided play room to see how everyone adjusts… which isn’t that the purpose of a playroom?!? It also has urine and dog poop all over the floor in both rooms, to which, ok it’s a nonprofit, that’s expected… but don’t come in when everything is fine and scream at my kid for his behavior. NOT OK, NOT COOL NOT EVER! I pray that someone provides a loving home for the puppies they have, but they’re not going to get much business when their staff is yelling at kids. You just lost one good home for one of your dogs.

I had been looking at cats and kittens online at many different shelters and adoption agencies and had found a kitten that I loved at the locations off of Crystal Falls. I drove out there to see him in person and look at the other cats as well. I knew that I wanted the little boy.
I filled out their adoption application and the guy if gave it to approved it and handed to the girl that was going to tell me about all the procedures. She told me I was approved and then while reading it told me that I couldn’t have the cat, because I was going to let him out during the day. So, the first guy didn’t even read the application all the way through before approving it and then the second girl was not polite about telling me that I couldn’t have the kitten. When I asked her why she said it was against their policy. I asked why they have such a policy in place she began telling me that it was because the cats don’t live as long when they are let outdoors and they they can get sick a lot more.
I brought up the point that we take pets to vets to prevent them from getting illnesses and to help them get better when they do and she told me that it was beside the point because the policy was that all animals had to be INDOOR ONLY, INCLUDING DOGS. She told me to try looking elsewhere for a different cat.
I left empty-​handed and broken-​hearted because of a policy that doesn’t make much sense.
I called them later after I had calmed down and asked about their policies and asked if I kept him strictly indoors if I could still get him. I spoke to the same girl as I did earlier. She told me that I couldn’t because I have two other cats that I let outdoors that could be carriers for diseases that he could get. There was no pleasing her. She told me that if I wanted to I could call the next day and I could call and ask to speak to Lindsey, the manager and they would put me through to her voicemail, or if she WANTED to take my call and was in the office that I could speak to her.
I have never had such a horrible experience trying to adopt a pet and my family has rescued all of our animals from shelters and all of our cats have lived well into their late teens and early twenties just like indoor cats do. They need to change some of the policies and realize that a good home is a good home regardless if the animal is indoors all the time or not.

Great place to adopt a dog. And to volunteer. Very clean.

Got a kitten from this place 3 days ago and it’s sick. So I called and they were like we didn’t make it sick (I guess implying that I did) so I ask if they have an on site vet the boy says no. So I ask is there anything they can do at all considering I just got it and it’s sick the boy says they can take it back If I want them to. So I said do I get the money back so I can get a non sick kitten from another place besides them and the boy told me that’s a donation and no I don’t get it back. What a shithole I couldn’t recommend these uncaring assholes to get a sick animal from at all. I thought well I could save a kitten instead of buy one from a kitten mill and as it turns out I needed to save it from the idiots not taking care of them at this shelter. Steer clear of this place they don’t care if the animals are sick and they don’t have a vet checking on the health of the animals.

A cat showed up on my doorstep and after a month or so I brought him here to be neutered. I liked that I could schedule the appointment online.
I was not impressed with how many OTHER people seemed to have the exact same appointment time to drop off their pets… it was standing room only and I was 10 minutes early (we had the first available time slot of the day).
The care was exceptional although you don’t get to meet the vet that will be caring for your dear pet. I get it though.
One thing that really grated my nerves, though, was that when I handed over my cat they took him to the back room and the next time that door opened I saw my cat in a cage right on top of a yapping dog. As if the pets aren’t already anxious and peeing themselves already, I don’t see why they can’t have a separate holding area for dogs and cats waiting for care.
Otherwise, it was a good experience and I’d take another pet to be spayed/​neutered.

I took our chihuahua in to be spayed here and I was completely impressed!!! Everyone we talked to was very helpful and informative! Their prices were great as well and the entire facility looked really neat!
If you’re looking for a low-​cost spay/​neuter clinic for cat or dog, definitely give this place a try! If you live around the Killeen area, it’s worth the drive out! It is possible to schedule online which makes it very convenient as well. But, they are NOT a full service vet clinic. They do offer some shots and nail trimming if requested prior to surgery. Their website is really well laid out with more of those details.

The staff was great to work with! they worked with us to answer questions, make suggestions and helped us choose an awesome dog. Lots of outside spaces to walk dogs on a leash, or fenced areas to let them loose. We were especially concerned to make sure we found an animal that was gentle with our young child. They have a nice space for cats too, although we didn’t really spend much time there. I would highly recommend this location to anyone considering rescuing an animal.

I appreciate what these folks are doing, but some of the policies need tweaking. I went there with my kids a few weeks ago in hopes of finding a mature cat to adopt. We found one that we all liked and went to talk about the process and see if that cat would be OK to let outside sometimes. When I told them I’d let it outdoors sometimes, they told me they couldn’t let me adopt one. They have a policy against letting the cats outdoors.
I explained that I lived on 4 acres, had a half acre back yard fenced, and that myself and my kids (plus a dog I adopted from the Humane Society) were always outside when we were home – I wanted the cat to be able to be outside too. They said no. End of story. Said I should find a barn cat…
Seems to me that I could have given a good cat a good home and they could have saved another one from a kill shelter. No go.

When we first moved here in 2008, we wanted another cat and adopted the infamous Beastlette from HSWC who gave us 3 years of laughs and joy being her insane self. A few weeks ago, she went out for her usual early morning prowl and never returned — a sad fact of life out here in the countryside.
After a few weeks, we both felt it was time to open up to another member of the family and went to the Shelter to check out the cat condos and I can honestly say, I’ve never been to a nicer shelter. The people — both staff and volunteers — really make it and after about 30 minutes, we knew we’d found our new companion Portia.
Thanks HSWC for all of your efforts to rescue and care for these wonderful animals who are looking for loving, caring homes. I’m looking at Portia right now as I type this and remember the moment I went back into the cat condos to take her out to bring her home. I was just overwhelmed with emotion — both missing Beastie who can never be replaced, and holding this lovely softly meowing (probably «…WTF???») bundle of fur that’s now part of our family.
We will continue to support all of the great work of HSWC and see at Barktoberfest!
UPDATE (⁹⁄₂₂): Unfortunately, Portia and His Royal Highness absolutely couldn’t get along so we had to return her to the Shelter. It was a traumatic experience as she’d grown on us but the staff went out of their way to help us with it. Much appreciated!

Took my little boy there today to get a feel for how he would do with different breeds and sizes of dogs. I also wanted him to see what happens to pets that families can no longer care for or want to care for.
I have to say that I was impressed. Lots of volunteers, the staff was exceedingly patient and helpful. I made it very obvious that we weren’t planning on adopting today and they weren’t pushy at all. They let me walk and play with every dog I was interested in. They were also knowledgeable of the dogs and made recommendations based on our situation, but not pushy.
Was there poop and pee in some of the kennels? Yes, but they are dogs. Some with absolutely no training and/​or have lived outside their entire existence. So this is to be expected.
I would recommend this shelter and will more than likely get our newest addition to our family from them.

My fiancé and I felt that we were prepared to open our hearts to another kitty, and ended up with two!
Something about visiting this branch is always uplifting. We can’t take them all home, and something about this place makes me feel as though the critters are in great hands.
This Humane Society branch will always get my charity dollars. Their love for the fur-​babies is undeniable, and they certainly put their money where their mouth is.
This branch is enormous, and the kitties and puppes all seem to be in very spacious areas. If only all shelters could be this lovely.

I have two Texas sized Yorkies. The 3 year old is 15lbs and the 2 year old is 10lbs and their both male. They like to pee everywhere and on everything!!! If one pees on something the other will pee right on the same spot just to cover it up! I heard that it’s a male thing.
The little guy is the «pack leader». He’s a sweetheart but also the very jealous type who wants all the attention. The big guy is more of a mellow fellow who needs attention every once in a while. He likes to play Frisbee, fetch, tug-​of-​war and likes to do the «moonwalk» when he doesn’t get his way or wants attention.
They have a basket full of toys and every once in a while the big guy will go dig in his basket and bring us a toy he wants us to play fetch with. However, his bossy little brother will sometimes try to take the toy away and play with it before it gets to us and for the most part the big guy didn’t seem mind sharing. This back and forth thing went on for about a year or so until the big guy got tired of his little brother’s attitude and decided to fight back and so they scrapped, and scrapped, and scrapped again…(where’s the «Dog Whisper» guy or the «It’s Me or The Dog» lady when you need them?)
Having heard that neutering males can help tone down aggressive behavior and may even help reduce their instinct to mark their territory, we decided to check into it. Our local vet wanted to charge us close to $ 400 per dog to neuter ($ 800 ouch!), but the Wilco Humane Society was much less and it’s the same service (cool!).
We called, set the appointment, and two weeks later dropped the two brothers off at 8am. We picked them up at 4:30pm and it only cost us $ 50 per neuterization, $ 3 per E-​collar, and $ 10 each for pain meds. Two empty ball sacks later and we only had to shell out $ 126 bucks which is a bargain compared to what our vet wanted to charge us.
Our babies were still a little drugged up when I picked them up, but nothing really to worry about. The glue stitches looked good and they even got a tattoo close to where their nads used to be just so everyone knows that they were neutered.
The lady there (sorry honey I didn’t catch your name) explained everything I needed to know about taking care of my babies while they recovered from surgery. Thank you sweetie! Thank you Humane Society of Williamson County for taking good care of our boys. Thank you for being there! Thank you again… Dang, can I ever thank you enough…

Last night I was trying desperately to find this guy a home before his euthanasia date 10÷30÷09 at TLAC I was unable to take him in because I did not already have an application in…
This morning I shed a happy tear when I heard Williamson County took him into their adoption program!!!
