Sulvia’s Dominican Salon

I read some review about not going here if you’re black??? That’s completely untrue. I’m as black as you’re going to get and I go here weekly. My hair is in great condition and the customer service is outstanding. They do a really good job of listening to your wants and I haven’t had a bad experience yet. I definitely recommend.

I love this place and especially the efficient and fast service. I’ve been to many area Dominican salons but Sulvia’s has great prices and they’re fast. Go on a weekday and you can save a little with their specials and you’re in and out! Parking is plentiful and the salon is always clean.

I love this hair salon. Very professional and inexpensive. I got my first hair color here. I moved to DC but drive to Laurel to get my hair done. Sulvia Dominican salon is awesome!

I’ve gone to this salon two times. I can say that this is the only Dominican salon where I was NOT on the brink of tears. My hair is natural and while they do charge more for natural hair, their prices are less than other area Dominican salons. Both times I requested it to be straight (versus curly) and both times I received what I requested. Nothing special a slight bend on the ends just straight hair.

Hair looks nice the first couple of times that you go. Then after a few weeks your natural hair will thin out and break off and fall out. My hair was down my back. I went to this salon for 3 months since my regular hair dresser was on maternity leave. When I went back to my regular hair dresser she had to chop most of my hair off because of the heat damage. Now my hair is to my ears. I’m so disappointed because it took me 2 years to grow it that long. I was very careful with my hair and didn’t put any heat on it in between hair visits. This salon really messed my hair up. I will never go to dominican salon ever again. Natural girls beware.

If you have natural hair, DO NOT COME HERE! I went last Sunday to get a blow out for a change from my protective style. Ive been natural since 2006, and for the past 2 months had no heat in my hair, so i was less worried about their heat. I was sooooo wrong. Throughout the week, my hair had a horrible burning/​chemical smell, couldn’t take it anymore so I washed it this morning. MY HAIR FELL OUT IN CLUMPS! Never in my life have I had so much breakage and hair loss. This was NOT shedding. When I would finger detangle in the shower, clumps of hair would just slide off into my fingers. I could seriously cry, but I’m just too angry with myself for stepping foot in that place after I read negative reviews here from other naturals. If you are not prepared to get major hair loss, DO NOT COME HERE. Please don’t do what I did, I regret it so much but it’s too late for me, but not late for you. Don’t do it.
UPDATE went back to the salon and told them how they destroyed my hair, and all they could say was they didn’t do it, no refund, no apology, and to bring the hair that fell off as proof! Unprofessional, untrained, horrendous customer service. Disgusted at their service and how they treat people.

My hair turned out nice. I was quite pleased with it, even though my trim was a bit half-​assed. But when I saw some other clients walking out the door, I was really worried! They let a few girls walk out of there looking CRAZY. Their hair was so busted, that i was thinking, «why wouldn’t the girls say something? Don’t they know it looks like a 5 day old hair style???» I was quite bothered by that. I also didn’t like the way they talked about a client’s hair when she walked in. She came in with an afro, and they talked about how bad it was. Why advertise that you do all textures if you’re going to do that? I have a thing about all that good hair/​bad hair nonsense, so it kind of pissed me off. I don’t understand Spanish well enough to speak it, but my mom speaks spanish (not natively though), and so I can understand more than I can speak. You should NEVER, EVER, talk negatively about clients in front of other clients – especially new ones! You never know who knows your language. So yeah, there are too many other Dominican salons in the area to stick with this mediocre one.

DO NOT GO IF YOU ARE BLACK. They do not know what to do with Black hair.
They fried my hair with a relaxer. I, too, had heard good things about Dominican salons. I found Sulvia’s online and decided to check it out. I was immediately called back to the sinks without anyone asking me what I wanted. I informed them I was there for a relaxer. The woman then sent me over to a different chair and started checking my hair. She was speaking another language and then called over two other people. I have hair that is down to the ends of my shoulder blades and I am Black.
They asked me when I had last had a relaxer-​which had been months. I can go a long time without a relaxer, because I often wear my hair curly and I can straighten it with no issues and it is silky. They then informed me I would have to pay more because I had a lot of new growth-​that is fine, my hair grows quickly.
It took a long time to get my hair done and the stylist who blew it out used VERY HIGH HEAT. It was very limp and fine looking when I left the salon.
The next day I noticed my hair was falling out in CHUNKS. The ends are fried, even though they cut off about two inches-​on my request. Every time I run my hands through my hair some falls out. The ends are just breaking off about two to three inches up.
The woman who put the relaxer in spent at least 15 minutes putting the relaxer in on one side. Let me repeat that. 15 minutes at least on ONE SIDE. I wondered why she was so incredibly slow, but I figured she knew what she was doing. My mistake, she was over-​processing the crap out of my hair.
I will never go back there, they obviously do not know how to handle African American hair. I have very fine hair, but a whole lot of it. I had zero damage to my hair when I went it and it was curly, smooth and well kept. I hardly ever put heat on it, maybe twice a month. They damaged it. But, I know, from reading reviews here that they will deny any responsibility. Plus, what can they do for me? Nothing, once you hair is fried, it is fried.
I hope someone will read this review and it will save them from their hair falling out.

I’ve been sending my 13 year old to Sulvias for a few months. Not all of the stylist in Sulvia’s are professionals please be careful. My daughter went for a wash n set only on her last visit. Not only did they trim her hair without my permission but the stylist burnt off a lot of her hair with the iron or some other form of a chemical. Initially I thought it was a bad scissor job then realized it was burnt off. They never told my daughter that her hair was burnt off even though there is 3 huge patches of short hair (about 2 inches) in length in my daughters 16 inch natural hair. Sulvia Salon sent my daughter off without saying a word to her or my husband. My husband who picked up my daughter made a full payment including tip of $ 50. I returned to the salon to confront Sulvias about this and when I walked in no one greeted us as they looked at each other as if no on wanted to deal with me. Finally Yesenia (not sure of name) approached me and basically said she remembered my daughter and my daughter came in with her hair cut/​burnt off. She explained that when the rollers were taken out she noticed the damaged hair. Now who would not notice this while rolling someones hair? Certainly not a licensed professional. Please don’t let this happen to you. No professional would do this and then lie about it. Not to mention my daughters hair is natural/​not chemically treated. I have not been offered any compensation and I am now treating my daughters hair on my own. I have provided photos.

This place is your typical Dominican Salon factory= wash and set without properly caring for your hair. I am transitioning natural and walked in to get a wash and set and trim. I left with my hair so straight it looked like I got it relaxed with no body. And my trim turned into a bad hair cut. Im waiting for it to grow out to get it corrected. Ill pass on this place.

Well I went to my old Dominican Shop and saw they were closed down. I went to that shop just out of habit not because I liked them.
Once I saw they were closed down I Unilocaled and found this place. I AM IN LOVE.
I Went in and signed my name and to a straight a train to the couch to wait when a friendly lady said you can come straight to the wash bowl. What really? No wait.
I am going natural so at the time my hair was pretty curly. The lady who washed my hair deranged my hair with conditioner which I loved then washed my hair and scalp. It was so clean.
I ended up getting a deep conditioner which I really needed. After that was washed she told me about a leave in conditioner that I really needed. It cost extra but I am all for it, since I am trying to get my hair healthy.
The dryer wasn’t to hot but still a good temp to get my hair straight. Which it worked. They did a great job. I also need to get a trim but since it was my first time I decided to wait. But next time I will def trust them and get my ends trimmed.
This is a great place. If my trim goes well I will give them 5 stars !

This place exceeded my expections. On 6÷29÷14 I left my (former) Domician salon in Glen Burnie (I literally walked out) because the owner was disrepectful and her staff was absent AGAIN, I drove 15 mintues to Sulvia’s. Like the other reviewers, I was compeled to try them because of the positive reviews. I was warmly greeted by the owner and her staff was very kind and customer focused. There was zero wait time which I love. I’m a busy mom and time is money so DON’T WASTE MINE! My hair looks still looks good after four days. I have a new Domician salon that I look forward to visiting.

I went to Sulvia’s on Saturday, May 17, 2014. I arrived at 9:20 AM and I saw that 2 people were ahead of me in the seating area. The salon was full and the woman next to me said that she was coming up on 2 hours of being there. I saw 2 stylists doing hair, 1 lady doing blow outs, 1 lady was roller setting/​coloring, and 1 lady was washing, but also helping with the rolling.
It took a while to be called back. That’s the only time that I didn’t note, but I want to say I was called back to the wash area around 10 AM. I started getting washed around 10:15 AM or so because I was done by 10:30 AM. She washed me 4 times and by the third time, my hair was squeaky clean. I was actually nervous until she asked me if I wanted a regular condish or deep. I chose deep condish and I was SO happy that I did. She put the conditioner on and sat me under a dryer for about 5 minutes. When I came out she immediately rinsed my hair and it was so soft. I mean ridiculously soft. Like it was conditioned by angel tears and unicorn horns. LOL. Seriously, that stuff was good. My natural 4B/​C hair was easy to manage afterwards because she was able to comb through my hair (with a regular comb) with ease. Unfortunately, this is where things got shaky for me.
I waited from 10:30 until 12:00 PM for a stylist. Cra-​zy! It was during this 1.5 hour wait that I found out that they normally move much faster than they were but Sulvia and 2 other stylists had been in a car accident the previous day. The person who told me also said that Sulvia was not okay. She was still in the hospital. That piece of news excused the wait and, in my head, I knew I’d give them another chance on another Saturday morning to see how quickly I could get in and out.
Finally, at noon, I was called over to the lady who was doing the blow outs. She was very soft spoken, and seemed very nice. She was very light-​handed and I was actually enjoying the blow out. (Side note: I had been burned pretty badly and ended up with a blister on my scalp from another popular Dominican salon years ago so I was extremely nervous about getting a blow out.) This wasn’t the case. Not only was my hair as tight and coarse as it could possibly be, I was also on a deadline. I really needed to have left an hour prior, but all things considered, I was keeping my cool. She got a few rows in when another patron (a parent) came in inquiring why her daughter wasn’t yet finished. They arrived around 10:45 — 11:00 AM because I was already washed by the time they came in. She specifically asked for the lady who was currently blowing my hair out to do her daughter’s hair because they had somewhere to be. Some conversation was had in Spanish with another stylist and the next thing I knew, I was getting put out of the blow out lady’s chair. Pissed would be an understatement. I understood the mother’s frustrations. I had my own, and like her, I had somewhere to be and I was headed out of state. Needless to say, the parent’s «apology» fell on deaf ears and Luz (one of the stylists) put someone out of her chair to finish me.
Luz finished my blow out and pin curl by 1 PM and I was walking out of the door. The price was reasonable though I believe there might’ve been an additional charge for using my credit card (there was a sign at the front desk that said something about it but I didn’t ask for clarification). By that point, I was 2 hours behind schedule so I generously tipped Luz and the shampoo lady since they were gentle with my natural hair and I left.
I pray Sulvia and the other 2 stylists are better. I will definitely try this salon again.

I went here based on reviews, and needed a blow out for that night. They open way early, which I loved. I hate hate hate sitting at a salon for like five hours– this ain’t that place. In and out in 70 min flat, with natural hair they washed, blew out and curled. They got my hair super straight, seriously there was no indication I had any curl. Almost have to make sure you have a little body. The blow dryers are set on H-​E-​L-​L. Hot. Hot. They mean business, and were a little rough and I’m not tender headed at all. Still, I will be back, the quality is amazing and they were very friendly and professional.

When you walk in, they start working on your hair immediately! I was in and out in under an hour and my hair is so straight and bouncy! The prices are very affordable and I plan on coming back at least once a month, hopefully twice a month :-)
I found this shop while doing a Unilocal search for Dominican Hair Salons because I know they can get my naturally curly/​frizzy under control.

These ladies ARE the TRUTH!!!
My hair looked like a dry, frizzy, mess, and I was scheduled to leave for Dallas in less than 24 hours. I walked in, and a young lady promptly shampooed my hair. Then, she roller set my hair. I sat under the dryer which wasn’t too hot. It was time for the «blowout» (the part I actually dread). yes, the blow dryer was three degrees from hell, but my hair looked amazing, and it was incredibly soft.
Here is the true test– I went to Dallas for four days, and it was 103 degrees. My hair looked amazing the whole time. No Lie! I was getting compliments the whole time I was there.
My last visit was even better! I got my hair done on a rainy humid Thursday, but this time a young lady named Kenya (I believe) did my hair. This young lady styled my hair beautifully. My hair felt soft, and it was super bouncy. I went to a party that night, and it was humid. The next morning, my hair still hadn’t reverted back to it’s natural state.
I have received so many compliments on my hair since I started coming here. From my other reviews, you know how I adore my Dominican salons, but I truly think this is a keeper because it is so close to my house. In addition, the prices are $ 25 Mon-​Thurs.
If you are natura or just want to extend your relaxer, then Sulvia’s is the salon for you. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed.

I think I found a hair spot for me… so happy it’s close to home!
Initially I took my daughter to this salon to get her natural hair blown out for a natural look. The process was quick and efficient and they did such a good job with her I thought to visit this place myself.
I returned with much enthusiasm and left extremely pleased. I would like to stop relaxing my hair and asked the tech to wash cut straighten my hair. She did just that in a little over than an hour which is a miracle when your talking hair dresser times on a Saturday morning.
I would say whether you are natural of have relaxed hair, try this salon. They are quick, friendly and most of all cost friendly. Thumbs way up!

Sulvia’s is you typical Dominican salon. Make sure you read up on what they are before you go. The girls use blow dryers that get really hot then flat iron your hair. You can also do a roller set where you sit under the dryer. My hair is pretty resilient so I’ve never had any problems but I’ve heard many people have.
The prices are fair and I’m always in and out in an hour. My only complaint would be some if the girls here don’t have patience to deal with natural hair and I’ve had to ask them to be a bit more gentle on a few occasions. I’m usually not tender headed at all but I feel like my hair is being pulled which is bad for my curls. They don’t seem to mind me asking so overall it’s always a good experience.

Sooo I am pretty picky about my hair. I’m cheap. And I HATE waiting for hours. Not a great combination to say the least.
So a couple weeks ago when I noticed a new salon was opening up across the street from my job, I was super excited. I don’t have to drive to Beltsville or Silver Spring anymore to get my hair done, yay!
I’ve been twice since they’ve opened ⁸⁄₂₀. Each time I was cheerfully greeted by the young lady at the front desk and immediately led back to the wash bowls by Sulvia herself. She gives an amazing scrub job and I adore their deep conditioners.
I had my hair styled by Angie and another young lady whose name I can’t recall right now. They both did a great job and both times I left the salon with swaaaanging pretty hair. And in under 2 hrs!
I think I finally found my home salon. They’re open 7 days a week which is super convenient for me.
