The Tailored Tea

Just had lunch here with 3 co-​workers. The food was wonderful but the service was horrible. When we asked for separate checks we were told «we don’t do that here» and she had already put it in the system. Hmm. The system was a handwritten check. The server should pursue a different career. Would only go back if they had new servers. 4 stars for food. NO STARS for service.

We came during the week to grab lunch and experience a ‘new’ place. The place is ‘historic’ and has a lot of ‘ma/​pa type’ charm, but the dining area is pretty small. It was pretty full so we had to talk loudly to hear each other, but that didn’t bother us. There was about a 10 – 15 minute wait to be seated.
The problem was that there was no heat in the room! They had a small radiator heat going, but it was not helpful. It’s hard to enjoy a meal when it’s so cold.
Service was friendly and the tea was delicious. We ordered sandwiches and salads and they were good. Not the best we’ve ever had, but not horrible.
Judging from the reviews, perhaps the weekend brunch is a better option. Either way, I don’t think we’ll return because it’s pretty pricey for what you get. There are other cafes in the area where you get more/​better food for less money… and you can eat in a warm/​heated place!

Decided to try the brunch because I was looking for a place close by that had Eggs Benedict. We arrived shortly after opening so there were only a couple tables but by the time we left they were beginning to get busy. Surprisingly there seemed to be only one person waiting tables. The Eggs Benedict has a different twist here. It is served over scones rather than English muffins. The scones were the only redeemable part of the dish. The «poached» eggs were so over cooked they were almost hard boiled. The «hollandaise» was so thin it looked like yolk. And the potatoes were so covered in Rosemary (one of my least favorite spices) that was the only thing you could taste. After finishing our meal we sat there for about 15 mins with our server no where to be found. The meal went from disappointing to annoying at this point. Once we tracked our server down we left cash just so we could get the hell out.

It’s my first time here with my friend, and my first impression of this place from the outside was «amazing location!» because it was located near the airport which had a great view of the planes taking off and landing. This place is very small with cramped sitting. Sometimes i couldn’t hear myself talk to my friend since we were sitting so close to other people. We could hear other peoples conversations, or the waitress taking someones orders. The service wasn’t the best, i felt rushed out of there. Also when i asked the waitress a couple questions about the menu (since i am a vegetarian) she’d give me answers as if i made the menu up and should know all the ingredients in all the dishes. And when i asked for extra napkins she seemed pretty crabby about it. Make sure your tea cups are clean, i found mine to be dirty. What i did like about this place and what you should go for is the tea and scones! They have a lovely selection of teas and really yummy scones.

So charming with excellent food. We stopped in for brunch on a sunday morning and were so pleasantly surprised. It wasn’t too busy so our service was quick. We loved the selection of teas and the breakfast menu had something for everyone. We picked up a couple bags of loose tea on the way out to enjoy at home. Overall it was a lovely experience and we’ll be sure to go back.

I admired this restaurant from afar for a while before finally trying it. Now, I come when I can to treat myself to healthy, delicious food and the peaceful atmosphere. The location is directly by the airport, providing an entertaining view of the planes coming and going from Albany airport. This time here, I had the chicken pot pie and daily iced tea. The day’s iced tea was a flavorful and refreshing black tea. The chicken pot pie came with a lovely fresh salad. The pot pie was homemade, creamy, and best of all, given its own unique touch by being topped with a sweet scone instead of pie crust. I always enjoy this spot. It is wonderful for brunch or lunch!

Reasonable prices, good light lunch, love the historic setting. The tea offered was very good too. I enjoyed the Darjeeling. The service, however, was not great. I arrived for a table and was seated by the hostess and told her I was waiting for another person. My friend was running late, and I sat there for probably 20 minutes being ignored by multiple waitresses. I was never asked if I wanted to order a tea while I waited. Keep in mind the place was pretty much empty. Once we got the check we waited so long we had to get up and find someone to take the check while 3 – 4 people sat behind the pastry counter playing with their phones. As I said, the offerings were satisfactory and it’s a cute place, but the service needs work, I would be willing to try again though if I’m in the area and give another chance.

First time here. I read all the reviews before coming and anticipated a long wait for everything but it was not the case. They had a large party upstairs but we were seated downstairs by a window and had very attentive service. It was our waitresses first day on the job and she did great. My friend and I shared a full pot of cinnamon tea which was excellent. I had an egg sandwich with ham and cheese and a buttermilk scone with clotted cream and raspberry jam. I loved the scone. It was a real treat. My friend and I were not in a rush. We wanted to sit and chat and they didn’t rush us at all but they checked in on us often in case we needed anything.
I was really thrilled with the place. I will be going back for high tea another time soon. I don’t really like leaving albany so many great places walking distance from where I live but this was worth the drive and cute country ambiance.
Also I was very put off by the owners responses to many of the posts on here. Felt she was combative when folks shared their concerns but I hear from my friend that the place is under new management (the chef bought it?). If that’s actually the case I think they have solved some of the procedural problems that the last owner seemed to have.

Thank you so much for a wonderful bridal shower for my niece. The tables were beautiful, loved all the different tea cups. There was also a table for gifts. The sandwiches were delicious and the deserts too. We had plenty of food for our group of 20. The mixed berry tea was amazing. Some people also had hot tea. The service was great as they stayed on top of everything. Every one had a great time!!!

great scones! a wonderful place for tea time with the family. great for young girls and their grannies.

Went as a group of 4 for a ladies afternoon tea outing. It is a quiet, small white house which appears to have tables downstairs and possibly upstairs for larger parties. It is very close to airport land facing a Midas and fire department on the Troy Schenectady x Old Niskayuna Road. It appears to be a wannabe countryside tea room with a few purposely mismatched tea cups and plates.
The afternoon tea set is not inexpensive for what is served and only offered a certain time of day. A few three tier sets brought to our table for sharing amongst our tea sipping table held a few mini tea sandwiches, a scone with clotted cream, and a selection of cupcakes, cheesecakes, and a few blueberries. Not very generous in amount for what it was worth and tasted sub par. I think I’d be able to create the 3 tier at home with help if any from my kid nieces and nephews. The kettles of tea we had were adequate for a few cups per person but the choices were also slim.
We were quite disappointed to say the least and after conversation we thought there would be a better and more fulfilling tea room across the river we could visit another time. It’s sort of like seeing a pretty handbag from afar but realizing it is a replica with all the wrong details. One star for the friendly and efficient service and another for the cute teaware.

Very nice sunny place for a tea break or breakfast. Get a window seat for view of airport. Big selection of teas and delicious baked goods.

Very busy small little house with cramped seating. Waited to be sat, waited to get water, waited some more for a pot of tea.
Menu printed with executive chef brought some optimism to our impending brunch. Basic omelets with scones & potatoes that were as hard as the scones!
Over all the service did not add to the experience! The one waitress was completely overwhelmed! Serving & dropping plates to all the tables made her forget many items!
Go for the hot tea served in mismatched cups & saucers but request that they CLEAN the teapot before they put it on your table!

Nice attempt and location. Just not as spectacular in the food area as there competitors in Troy and Ballston Spa. You surely get the Mom and Pop sense. Have been there a half dozen times since they opened and my wife has been more than I. I will keep going back but expectations will never be more than a 3 star.

had a really delicious breakfast here. all five of us thought our orders were terrific… zucchini bread as well as cranberry bread french toast, and very tasty egg dishes with seasoned potatoes. very friendly, welcoming visit and service. definitely going back!

I held a 60^th birthday for my mother here. I made a reservation for 14 people only 6 days in advance and was thrilled they could accommodate us. We had our own room upstairs that was set up with one long dining table, one side table for gifts and cake and one small table with a pitcher of water, cups and menus.
The waitstaff was unbelievably patient as we mingled when we arrived. Many of us ordered large pots of various tea flavors and shared with the group. Every tea was perfectly steeped and was made of high-​quality tea. I am a tea aficionado and was very pleased with the tea service. All the meals came out together which was great considering the size of the group. I had the Scone Benedict. In general, I think a scone is too crumbly by nature to be part of a Benedict but otherwise the dish was great. The homefries were outstanding.
I brought a cake and paid the $ 1/​slice cutting charge to have the staff cut and serve the cake on their china. It was worth the extra charge for me.
I had been here once before not long after it opened and had a nice experience but not an exceptional one. I’d say that this time, however, was exceptional. And the staff was superb!

I really enjoy The Tailored Tea. As a 20 year old it is a nice refreshing place to go to get a break from the hustle and bustle of a typical day. The clientele is a lot of elderly people but don’t let that scare you away. The décor is perfect. It is is an old house with beautiful mismatched china which adds a certain lovable quirkiness to it. The food was delicious. I ordered the butternut squash ravioli. It was in some sort of amaretto tasting sweet sauce with cherry tomatoes and spinach. IT WAS AMAZING. It tasted like a real treat. Definitely something I would order again and again. My friend got the Horace Greeley sandwich, she says she really enjoyed it.
The tea can be ordered by half pot or full pot. The half pot is 3 dollars. The menu said it was 3 cups of tea but it was really 7! The pot never seemed to end and that was okay with me,
I highly recommend the Raspberry Apple tea. It had a delightful tartness to it.
The service was good and quick, even when it got to be busy. There was only one waiter on the entire room, he did a very good job not neglecting anyone.
The Tailored Tea is a unique experience. I would recommend it for anyone. Anyone between a little girl (they would love it) to an elderly man and anything in between would find this place charming.

I had a really wonderful experience here, with quick and attentive service, nicely brewed tea, and an interesting menu. Be sure to note the «scone of the day» and try one of the packaged per-​person lunches/​high teas/​whatever it is we call them in this country.
Also, lots of mismatched cups, which I like.

Have been here a few times. I’m not against tea, but I’m not an aficionado of it either. That said I’ve always been impressed with what I’ve ordered, but I’m not certain of tea drinkers would agree.
The pastries are fresh and tasty, and there’s nothing wrong with the food. I like the place a lot and can only barely not give it 5 stars.

«Leisurely» is such a delightful word. One could say, go for a «leisurely» stroll along a promenade along the river, ambling all the while, having a pleasant chat. Or, one could be «leisurely» about filing your taxes and end up in jail.
Somewhere in the middle is Tailored Tea, with a leisurely approach to the high tea. As the only patrons in the restaurant at the end of the day (by the time the food finally came, at least), we weren’t exactly in a hurry, but waiting nearly 40 minutes for some pastries (warm, maybe fresh-​baked? delicious) and tiny sandwiches seemed somehow not as carefree as one might hope. With various delays (some on the part of our own party, to be sure) we ended up stretching it into a nearly two hour visit, which may be a grand value if you look at it in terms of minutes of experience per calorie consumed.
We do very much enjoy the historic building, the chatty owner, and the excellent food. The tea is brewed a bit thin, and while I hate to dwell on such things — as a member of, apparently, the leisure class — nearly $ 100, with tip, for high tea wares (four adults, sharing three servings, plus two children) of any ilk seems a bit excessive. We had high tea at the Boston Public Library a while back, which was just as authentic, half as expensive, and four times as fast.
As noted elsewhere, it does not quite take full advantage of its location right on the end of the runway, but the building’s orientation and the lack of a deck build out probably preclude this. Nevertheless it was a disappointment to the younger members of our party and at least one older one.
We did like things like the mismatched but delightfully sundry china, the display cabinets in the rooms, and the practically colonial room organization (more like a tavern than a tea room it must be said.)
Again I would emphasize that the overall quality was excellent and the ambiance fairly exquisite. I just can’t say that the exquisitely excruciating amount of time we spent waiting quite made up for it today. We’ve been tempted to try it for lunch but can’t afford that much time in the middle of the day.
It shall remain, therefore, only a special occasion destination for us, but if you have the time, the scratch, and want to experience something a bit out of the ordinary, here it is.
