Every time I call this school I always get someone in a rush to get me off the phone or someone who is rude. Don’t bother going there if you don’t know where your going because if you ask someone who works there, they will give you wrong information. I’m not sure if they really are stupid or playing a cruel trick. I had set an advising appointment due to I’m a transfer in student. I had no idea where i was supposed to go so i went the academic advising center (no brainer). No. I supposed to go somewhere else and the guy behind the counter directed me to go there. Mind you, its 110 degrees outside; I head in that direction. Something told me that he was wrong after walking and baking in the sun for about 7 min, the buildings looked more like dorms. I then ask a student where i might have to go and he directed me clear across campus. Now my appointment is now 10 min past due so I call the general number to get someone in advising in the liberal arts building. a woman answers and with an attitude directly transferred me somewhere else, no help. so after searching for the number to call on my phone in the hot ass sun, i told the guy that i am on campus but late due to i am lost. Without hesitation the academic advisor canceled the appointment saying I’m too late (its 15 min past due). You would think he would be kind enough to direct me where to go and at least see me since i was walking in the sun for 20 minutes. Very irritating. Please don’t have ignorant people working for the school, its a bad representation of what type of people you have assisting others.

Okay when someone enters the little cubicles in the forth floor they are noisy as hell. Fine, but they put their headphones at full blast just to concentrate? Idk how. But for someone reading and studying it can be so distracting. Then we have people that come in and just slam their books on the table, or organize there stuff loud when leaving. But the worst of them all are the noisy people that bring in food. I seriously wish they would not allow people to bring in food into the 3^rd and 4^th floors. It’s Quiet study for a reason. I don’t care if I starve to death, but better to have a quiet place to study than not.
People come in with loud ass plastic bags, ripping off wrappers off food, smelly ass food that you can smell from far away, chips/​nuts where you can hear the crunching sound, soda cans being opened, OR those damn people that whisper for long periods of time carrying over a conversation! Ever heard of opening that up before you walk into the library so you can be courteous to others? Or not bring in smelly food. Bring some dry food, in containers. This type of behavior just makes it feel childish. The only quiet people are the foreign students. Seems like they are just here for studying, having fun, and being safe. A risk here or two, but always minding their manners. It’s always the Asian people that are nice. If I can I always sit somewhere close to them cause everyone else are rude as hell.
The parking situation sucks, but what can you do about it? It is what it is. Point is just don’t buy into this place. If you can afford it go somewhere else to get an education. Don’t waste your time like I’m about to. Find like minded people, and avoid the idiots. Don’t live there and waste money you dont have, save it all on paying money back. Don’t buy the merchandise really not worth it. I see so many freshman buying into the hype and feel sorry for them because they don’t know the background to all these lies.
If your going to go here, go for a degree that will give you some type of leverage in the work force. Until this place does not improve just go to school and thats it. They want to fund there campus then improve. But I blame the professors crappy personalities and lack of educating on this shitty city and what it turns you into. You may come in with the best intentions, but come out the worst if you don’t have a high morality for yourself as to not get lost in this city.

This is my second semester at UNLV as undergraduate student. So far the university is alright. The teachers/​staffs I have so far are friendly. The one thing I hate about this school is the parking. Since I live in the Summerlin area, I have to wake up very early just to find a parking space. The one thing I like about the school is that the university has some places to keep the students studing or to relax.

I went to school here last semester! I had some great professors and I met some great students too! This campus is beautiful! Its big so I would recommend a skateboard or bike to get around! The tuition is very expensive especially for me cause I was a out of state student! So if you are on a budget this is probably not the best place for you! Be ready to do lots of studying!

Update: Guide on «How to get past your math requirement» So You Can Start to Enroll in What Matters for Your Future…
I am certain now that the biggest obstacle to a freshman/sophomore’s ambitions in getting past their core classes and into something, like Lee Business School, is the math requirement, and the horrendous instructors by the UNLV math department. I can personally remember several who had to repeat REMEDIAL math classes (95. 96. 126. 127. 132…) because of the poor resources available (bad learning software for example).
Here is a brief guide to get you guys through your required math courses so you can apply and enroll in what matters as fast as possible.
Lets look at your options.
1. If you are STILL in high school, try to complete up to AT LEAST Trigonometry. Unless your desired major requires Calculus. Try to set that as your pre-​graduation goal. Because as you as you try any of these subjects in either UNLV or CSN the content it covers is far greater than necessary and 10 times as hard.
2. If you are out of high school with only a few ok grades in Algebra, take your UNLV math placement exam. It costs around $ 10 per try, but you can be placed as high as Math ¹²⁷⁄₁₃₂ if you are good enough. The content is fairly straightforward, they are definitely going to test you on.
A. Factoring binomials and trinomials (memorize your difference of two squares, «synthetic division» and other shortcuts)
B. Complex fractions (practice your LCD and LCMs)
C. Imaginary numbers (try a couple of factoring problems)
D. Library functions (as in the graphs of x, x², x³, x⁶ just Google and memorize what it looks like, do not forget about logarithmic, square root, and absolute value functions!)
E. Graphing functions of ANY power (refer to your library functions) after you factor it down to zeroes, etc. (the zeroes of the even power will bounce back, zeroes of the odd powers will pass through)
F. Rational equations (its just fractions that you have to factor, solve, or graph)
G. Asymptotes (Parts of the coordinate plane where your graph cannot cross, it just sort of gets closer and closer to it)
H. Inequalities (it may be presented in ANY of the subjects above)
I. Vertical/​Horizontal Shifts and Stretches, it will be applied to all of the math problem types mentioned above (not as hard as you think, you can quickly Google it)
This isn’t a complete list, but it should give you a general idea of what the exam should look like.
3. If you have never bothered learning this before, I suggest taking your math prerequisites in community college like College of Southern Nevada. Now given, the learning software is just as sucky, but the instructors are more informative and much easier on you in the exams. A side-​by-​side comparison of the same math course from both CSN and UNLV will tell you, you are learning no more than 50% to 75% of the material you are supposed to know at UNLV. UNLV math courses will hurl a bunch of insanely hard, 30-​minute math problems at you, while CSN exams will try to verify if you «got the basic concept».
Note that when you transfer your credits over to UNLV, it will simply be regarded as a «Pass or Fail», you can earn anywhere between a A to a C (2.0 GPA), and you’ll be allowed to fulfill the transfer credit. Take it all the way to Math ¹²⁷⁄₁₃₂ if you like.
I am not telling you to completely postpone your UNLV academic career for my last suggestion. What I am asking you, is at least delegate the task of completing your math requirements to having it completed over at CSN. Meanwhile, you may take any other non-​Math related course in UNLV if you’d like.
No matter what option you select, try to remember the following tip…
«Learn from your teacher, not from the books or the lousy math software».
The teacher is going to allude to you on what is going to be tested. The book usually states too many subjects that will not be on the exam anyways. And the learning software is programmed by people who do not know math (negative over negative in a function is a POSITIVE number, and yet it will mark you wrong), OR the lousy software will crash your laptop. I actually got past math by skipping the homework that was worth 10% of my letter grade (I do not recommend doing this, you might need that chance of improving by a full letter grade).

Right, let’s address the parking issue. It does suck, period. So this semester I bought a «spot» a flippin parking spot, yes it cost money (100 or so smackers) but you know what? I have not had to freak out one time this semester about parking. Yes, I have to walk, on this campus walking is a requirement. Did I mention my parking spot? Ya, it’s in a parking garage, covered, no sun beating down on my car.
Cost, right. Well an education can be expensive, but better than not having an education at all. Listen, if you are a resident of Nevada tuition is not that bad. Can there be improvements? Yes, just like everywhere else. You have to take the good with the bad.
Overall, good times… Advice: Just buy a parking space for the semester…

UNLV is a great affordable 4 year university. Yes, they have increased their tuition, but tell me which other university hasn’t. As a Las Vegan I love UNLV!

I love UNLV. So happy to finally be here pursing my degree. The only problem is the staff that works here. I love almost all my professors. They not only are willing to help you with resume, figuring out your future goals and how to achieve them, but also having the best guest speakers to motivate and given us advise.
I only ever have issues with the hotel advisors office. Kim at the front desk is the worst. She has been nothing but rude to me for no reason. I sneak over here when I get out of class early to book appointments. I work FT and school FT. I go to work an hour early so I can use that hour and hour lunch to walk to campus and go to a class. I never have a free moment to call and book something. I usually email my questions or attempt to book my appointment. I wish they would change the front desk person. The advisors are so nice and helpful. I am shocked they have someone so impolite working up front especially since it is the Hospitality Department.

This is my first semester at UNLV and this review is mainly based on my experience with Bob Ain, a math professor at UNLV.
I originally had Professor Choi as my math teacher but thought it was in my best interest to switch classes because there was a slight language barrier. I ended up switching into Bob Ain’s college algebra class. During the second week of class he handed back an assignment and gave me an ⁸⁄₁₀. After class I asked for an explanation and he said I should have written it in essay format. I then said you never specified the format and he said do your English teachers tell you the format they want it in. I said yes and he said that’s bullshit and he told me to get out of his class multiple times. I could not believe the way he reacted to me and decided to speak with the associate math chair Malwane Ananda. He put blame on me for the altercation because I threw out the assignment on the way out of the classroom. This was completely irrelevant because this happened after he spoke to me in an unprofessional manner. After speaking with Malwane I felt like no one was on my side so I decided to let it go.
Weeks later he disrespected me again in front of the entire class. He was writing a problem on the overhead projector and no one could see it so I told him and then he called me a «smart ass». After this incident I could not let it go. I set up a meeting with the Associate Dean of Life Sciences Javier Rodriguez. I discussed my concerns with him at length and he seemed to take my experiences seriously but then never reached out to me weeks after we had spoken. He had told me he would call me or email me to confirm he had taken action even though he could not tell me exactly what type of action was taken. I decided to reach out to him and when he answered the phone he acted like he almost didn’t remember me. I told him I was calling to see if action was taken and he said I told you I couldn’t tell you. Then I told him what he said and he said he didn’t say any of that. The fact that he couldn’t even reach out to me showed his real lack of concern for the treatment I experienced. I will continue to fight this until I feel adequate action is taken. Bob is not only disrespectful and a terrible role model for students but his teaching methods are ineffective.
It is very unfortunate that the faculty that is supposed to stick up for students is doing the exact opposite.

I would just like to share that the University of Nevada Las Vegas is a horrible college and, in my opinion, should not be considered a certified university.
My major as an undergraduate is Elementary Education. I have been an A student since arriving at UNLV. I currently hold 143 credits, when you only are required 122 to graduate. I passed both the PRAXIS tests with flying colors.
They kicked me out of my Student Teaching on the basis of drama and things that people thought I «might have said.» I was unable to graduate when I was supposed to, which was last Fall, because of this. They told me I had to take an F on my transcript and retake it in the Spring. My GPA has now dropped to a 3.0.
Then, they did not place me at a new school this Spring even after I had enrolled in the course and I had all my prerequisites in line. They didn’t even tell me that I was supposed to be placed until the week of. I even found a placement for myself and they refused.
On top of all this, they placed a charge on my account of a whopping $ 2600 due to the fact that I was not in attendance during my Student Teaching and I had to repay UNLV for my student loans that were unused.
I finally paid off the balance today using credit cards. They informed me at the beginning of this month that if I did not pay it off by April 1, I would be unable to graduate, even though I was not aware of this balance until mid-​January.
They are a bunch of money hungry imbeciles that abuse their students and take away opportunities for educational expansion. I am currently broke and unable to teach because they decided in my last semester that I was unfit to be a teacher. I have been mistreated and disrespected more than I ever thought possible.
They have left this almost graduate poor, without a chance of a career when I have worked five years to get where I am– which is, precisely, nowhere.

And I wouldn’t have chosen anything else other than my alma matter! Why the 3 star review you might ask? Although I have pride in UNLV, I am well aware of there being better options else where. And no I am not referring to the school up north, but rather out of state universities.
I can start by saying my college experience was rather enjoyable. When you grow up in Vegas, going to UNLV isn’t exactly the most exciting thing considering it’s the only major university in town and the acceptance rate isn’t exactly competitive. Although my first semester I was pleasantly surprised. I can honestly say it felt like a «real» university. UNLV is comparable to the state university system in California. The major plus is that it is a university with division I ncaa sports including football. I respect the university and state because most schools costs almost twice the tuition here and compete in division II sports. I can see why the graduation rate is a bit lower, the Las Vegas job market doesn’t exactly favor those individuals with a degree. Unlike other major cities where an education is a must to be competitive in the job market. The result of it is the city not susceptible to an education, which is also a result for low endowment. I do highly applaud the Fertita and Harrah’s family for their generous donations. The UNLV Rec Center, Lied Library, student union, and CSUN events all added to the college feel adding to the efforts of an «student centered» campus. Definitely couldn’t miss major events like UNLV premier and UNLV UNR Fremont Cannon game. I think a major downer for me was I felt like I didn’t get the most out of my education and I have my program to blame for that and not the university. Another gripe I have is I wish the buildings were more in uniform like other universities with a beautiful campus.
All in all, in you’re trying to save money by staying in state, UNLV isn’t a bad option especially if you’re a millennium scholar. Racking up thousands of dollars in debt isn’t exactly ideal, especially when your degree isn’t gonna get you a job paying 50k a year right out of college. Go Rebels!

I went for a symposium here last weekend and I have to say that the campus is pretty snazzy. I go to grad school at CSUN and our campus is like a homeless person asleep in an alley way. Not so with UNLV! The place was really nice with allot of modern facilities.
The anthropology faculty and staff were incredibly knowledgeable and were really involved with outreach efforts.

I graduated from UNLV Fall of ’12 as a transfer student from Oklahoma State University exactly one year ago to the day. I started Spring of ’11. If you have the money, I implore you to choose to attend a different school.
I transfered because my parents couldn’t afford the $ 26k/​year out-​of-​state tuition they were paying for me to attend OSU. I had about 68 credit hours, including about 18 hours of senior level classes. I also had CLEP credit for English I & II. CLEP is a nationally recognized test that allows you to test out of college level courses.
Well after OSU I did some CC classes in California. Italian, Biology… Just random classes that I thought were interesting. I had about 40 credit hours of cc classes.
Guess how many credits from OSU were accepted by UNLV, a school that isn’t ranked anywhere near OSU? ZERO. They accepted ZERO credit hours from a great state university, and accepted nearly everything from the cc. Think about that…
Apart from the hotel college, which I had to take 4 classes in because I was double majoring in dietetics and journalism, this school is a joke. I was at UNLV for two full years and didn’t buy a single book my entire last year. And I still made the dean’s list. Yeah. I told my professor that the 400 level courses were easier than my 100 level courses at OSU — and I wasn’t being facetious. There are a handful of good teachers but for the most part, if you show up and participate, you’re looked at like the golden rock star child of the class.
I was heavily involved in student life. I was a two term, elected senator for the College of Health Sciences and chaired the rules and ethics committee as well as vice chaired the ways and means committee which oversaw a budget of $ 1.2+ million dollars in student funds. Because of my position, I was consistently present at Nevada Board of Regents meetings, fighting against tuition increases, to no avail. The top level administrators are lining their own pockets while cutting classes. Shameful.
This place runs like a zoo. Nobody has any idea what they’re doing. I had to speak before the Board of Regents to complain about the hassle I was going through to get my CLEP credit recognized by the university so that I could graduate. Luckily the press was there and I got my paperwork signed off on.
You have to pay around $ 75 for a graduation check. It supposedly is for the counselors to verify that you have met all your requirements for graduation and can apply to graduate. I did the mandatory check, graduated and when I hadn’t received my diploma by March, I called the school and they told me I hadn’t graduated because I didn’t take English II. (Which I had CLEP credit and a signed waiver from the provost of UNLV that had been turned in months prior to graduation.)
This didn’t just happen to me. It happened to my sister and multiple friends — and we all graduated in different semesters in different majors. The graduation check is just a way to scam another $ 75 out of you.
Luckily I keep amazing records and marched down and demanded they fix their errors. They didn’t contact me to say I was missing a credit, after I graduated, I had to contact them to see where my diploma was. They straightened it out because of my record keeping. Surprise surprise. I did graduate.
Good riddance.

It’s college. There’s not really much I can say about that. Of course, it’s less difficult than most other schools, but there are some key classes that make up for that on the dark side. *cough* scienceclasses *cough*
your best bet is to get involved. any college experience will be boring if you don’t. Fill out FAFSA – trust me, I never thought I’d qualify for anything. but I did! Take it from someone who knows! APPLY FOR SCHOLARSHIPS. Free money, hello!
None of my advisors really helped me or explain things well. I learned to do everything by myself, which is what you should do! Learn to be independent. Ask, but research first!
Studying doesn’t hurt you. it might be painful at first, but it’s worth it in the end!
I have fun at this school because I make my experience fun!
PS. Try not to transfer here from out of state colleges. They don’t really like any one else’s credits, true story.

People have always asked me why UNLV? Is it because a lot of Hawaii kids go to this school.
NO. I decided to go to this school because of the WUE scholarship. I paid as much as if I went to a school in Hawaii. In fact, I tried to run away from the Hawaiians. Haha.
Social: It’s up to you (student) to make the best out of your experience at UNLV. You can be one of those who just goes to class, someone who gets involved in school or just not go to class at all. What I enjoyed was getting involed. Yes, I was in a fraternity. A business one, though. I always looked forward to those 15 minute breaks between classes and you get to see people you know.
Academinc: Professors in the 100 – 200 classes are generally not caring about their students. Once you get into your junior/​senior year, the professors are the ones who will care about their students. I’m a marketing major, (or was, LOL I don’t know how to word that). All of my marketing professors cared about their students and how could they emphasize our learning. I’ve kept in touch with them and I feel so much smarter knowing what Qualitative Marketing Research is, haha.
PROS:
Student Union — best meet up place with friends. They have various fast food restaurants in there. I can’t believe I ate Panda Express almost every day. Gross.
Lied Library (Club Lied) — this library is seriously like a club. Every hangs out here, bring you food and just rage. Plus finals week, they close at 2 am. Just like a nighclub.
Academic — I definitely lucked out in getting all my required courses done before they started doing the budget cuts. I was able to take all the marketing professors that specialized in certain subjects (Sports Marketing, Retail Marketing, etc) before they got cut/​fired. IF UNLV decides to hire them back again, it’s a great learning experience… but don’t ask me anything about Sports Marketing cause I don’t do sports. haha.
CONS:
Parking — when I started back in ’07, OMG, parking was a biznatch. Since then, they have built the Tropicana Garage and that eased up the parking a little bit. Passes still costs an arm, a leg and a torso.
Pricing/​Tuition — Expensive if you paid out of state with no scholarship! Even if you’re in state! I was under out of state tuition but I still paid low enough because of my scholarship.
Neighborhood — Ok, it’s not a college town. Inside UNLV: amazing, outside UNLV: scary. You’re on the east side. I remember seeing a cop arrest people on the street a couple times in a month.
**If you decide to go to this school, do your research first. Is this right for you? Lifestyle? Academic?

I’m speaking about UNLV from the student point of view, now I’m alumni. I was a biology pre-​med school major. But I won’t talk a lot about the biology department here, it’s more-​so for the university in general because there is just SO much that I can say. I can only give advice and tips to which I’ve learned over the years. None of this review has anything to do with sports. I’m not a sports fan nor was I really involved with sports during my undergrad.
I loved attending UNLV. There are just so many opportunities available to take advantage of. I got involved with community service student organizations like SODA– Students Organizing Diversity Activities and they held many different events that I was able to get involved in, such as ASB which is alternative spring break where students spend a spring break in another state doing community service.
The school is a commuter school therefore you have the opportunity to get involved if you want. For me, college was a chance to start fresh, so getting involved was always fun to me. (and made for great application boosters)
Parking enforcement is strictly regulated here. Make sure to call UNLV parking before you park to find out when parking times are enforced and when you can park!
UNLV lied library– closes around 2AM during finals week and they DO allow you to bring food and drinks into the library. The lied library is one of the most beautiful libraries I’ve seen consisting of 5 floors and different floors being «quiet» floors.
The student union– has only like 2 microwaves and the entire campus has like zero refridgerators for public use. There are however ways around it, such as using the Law Library’s (beware of the law students) refrigerators and the SEB (new engineering building) has them that say «for faculty/​staff» but as a student, I’ve used them and the microwaves, as long as you play it cool.
For registration/​financial aid:
1. Fill out your FAFSA as soon as possible.
2. Funds do not disperse into your acct until the week that schools start.
3. Register for classes ASAP because they fill up fast. If you can’t register because it’s not your turn, ask a friend to hold the spot and sign up for a class.
4. Don’t believe everything rate my professor says.
