Cobrinha Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Academy Las Vegas

My daughter and husband started doing BJJ about 2 years ago, here in Las Vegas at another gym. My husband got injured after training for a few months, while our daughter continued. She found a passion in competing in tournaments, however, the team that she was with did not focus on tournaments, leaving my daughter stagnant with her BJJ technique and not progressing in competition. We started to see a group of coaches in bow ties at tournaments. Not only did their professional attire stand out, but their passion for the sport and the kids on the mat. My family and I watched this team of coaches support their students, win or lose. Each competitor from the team always had a coach by their side, something that we were unfamiliar with. A few days later, we walked in to Cobrinha BJJ Academy Las Vegas, and we were immediately greeted by Professor Hector. He welcomed us with open arms, and our daughter felt comfortable trying a class with his students. The team graciously accepted my daughter and made her feel that she was a part of their family. We quickly made the decision to change gyms and train with Professor Hector. His business partner Helen, helped make our gym transition smooth and painless. It has been three months now, and we have seen a drastic improvement in our daughter. She has evolved both physically and mentally since being at this academy. My husband has even decided to go back to training, after seeing the family environment that the academy provides. Everyone is there to help you, not hurt you, and there are no ego’s in the adult classes or the kids classes. We definitely made the right choice when we changed gyms. We encourage everyone to come see the difference in their kids that we have seen in ours. Started training in BJJ in 2009 and have had the opportunity to train at multiple gyms throughout this time. Being from California, I was lucky to have access to some of the best gyms around and didn’t know if I would be able to find the same quality of training when I decided to move to Vegas last year. Professor Hector and Helen immediately put my hesitation to rest when they welcomed me with open arms to their gym, After a couple of free classes, I was able to see the instructions provided are top notch.
After years of training, I have racked up my fair share of injuries. What really got me comfortable at this gym was Hector’s special attention knowing my injuries. I can hear him in the background during my rolls letting my sparring partners know to go easy on the knees whenever it’s caught in positions that puts pressure on them. Helen was also super helpful in taking personal time after class to give me pointers and helped me stretch to prevent injuries.
They are great at adapting their teaching style to different people. Hector provides as good of instruction to his competitors as he does me despite the different goals we have. The Cobrinha approach to BJJ is truly different and top notch. They even got this old fart trying out all the open guards currently used on the competition scene. The gym also has the best training partners where higher belts are always willing to help lower belts. Awesome environment all around!
I waited almost a year to write this review for 2 reasons. 1, I just signed up for Unilocal,and 2, I wanted to make sure the quality and standard of this gym wasn’t a short term experience. I can confidently say, you will not find a better BJJ academy in Las Vegas!

Phenomenal instruction from a very personable and accomplished grappler in Hector. Top class school that is very welcoming. No politics and very accommodating for visiting students. Cannot recommend this school enough. If I lived in Vegas this is where I would train.

Awesome atmosphere and all around great place for the family! If you’re looking high level jiu jitsu, this is it. All the coaches and staff made my daughter (who’s 12) feel right at home.

When I found out that they take 3 year olds to start training in jiu-​Jitsu with no hesitation, I wanted to sign up my little one. And went she actually tried the class, she had so much fun. I’m so impress with the amount of PATIENCE the coaches have in teaching this age group. Now the entire family trains at this gym. And the best thing about this gym is that, everyone is FAMILY.

In a town full of «MMA» gyms, I was able to find a place to train jiujitsu that epitomizes the true spirit of martial arts… I came to train while I was in town and saw a Cobrinha gym had just opened up. Hector is warm and welcoming as a person and attentive as well as passionate as an instructor (that’s not even touching on his championship pedigree). His ethic and attitude are well reflected in his students as they are all courteous with serious jiujitsu chops. Helen also contributed to the positive atmosphere of the gym. I’ve trained martial arts my whole life and still coach at my own gym in the Bay Area. There aren’t many places like this… and it’s refreshing to see that martial arts is still alive and well. Do yourself a favor… if you’re going to train-​make this place THE place for you and your family.

When I heard professor takes young students as young as 3 years old, it was a not a hard decision to make to join the Cobrinha team/​family. Professor Hector and Helen has done wonders for my girls and provided the keys needed to live a healthy Jiu Jitsu lifestyle. In just less than 2 months my oldest daughter (8 years old) has change so much and change all her bad junk food habit to healthy habits. I know my girls are in good hands when they are under the guidance of professor Hector and Helen. I to am a student and I never seen such a big improvement in my game under this system. The thing I love most about this gym is it is really a family environment gym. Everyone treats everyone the same no matter if you a student a worker. We live across town from this school but it is worth the commute. My son really enjoyed the trial class, so much that I signed him up at the next class. You are treated like family from the moment you walk in. He’s been to 3 classes so far and has absorbed the technique very well. He enjoys it to the point that he doesn’t want to leave when the class is over. I highly recommend Cobrinha. Once you take the trial class and you’ll be hooked.

Hector and I have only met at tournaments when his kids team would compete against mine. His students were always the hardest to compete with because of their awesome technique due to Hectors coaching. Las Vegas has a new sherriff in town with this Academy. If you have a kid that wants to be great THIS IS THE PLACE TO BE. This is coming from a different school owner with no affiliation with this academy. That alone says a lot and speaks volumes this is the place to be.

Choosing Cobrinha BJJ Las Vegas for my first Bjj lesson was a no brainier. If you know anything about Bjj you’ll know that Cobrinha is the best and his instructors are top of the line ! I was a little apprehensive about starting my training but Hector my instructor made me feel very comfortable and welcomed ! I don’t live in Las Vegas but Cobrinha Bjj LV will be my home away from home ! I made the right choiceI forgot to add, everybody there was very helpful and super friendly.

My sons both train here and it has been amazing. Coach Hector works closely with all students to motivate them and keep them positive. They are excited to train every day. gym is beautiful and clean with lots of room to watch. A great place to train!

This is my favorite jiu jitsu school in Las Vegas. It just opened! It has everything I have been looking for and more! Here is why…
Facility: Located in a newer model business park, easy and free parking, safe location with low traffic flow, inside the building it is clean and organized, new high quality mats, clean showers, good size mat space, modest but complete conditioning equipment in the back, they have a waiting area and also a viewing area
Staff: Hector the head Jiu Jitsu instructor is one of the BEST COACHES I have met, you have to try out a class to see what I am talking about, no words will be enough to describe what a great teacher he is, he is professional and personable, he has so much enthusiasm when he teaches, he cares about the development of all his students, he is patient but knows how to push you to work harder, his details in the techniques are exquisite. The style he teaches I would describe as modern, fluid, high percentage techniques, innovative, something for everyone, creative but still very technical with safe body mecanics, and smart. He teaches all of the classes, sometimes from 7am until 9−10pm. There is about 6 – 7 classes a day, kids and adults combined. I recommend you «like» their Facebook page so you can get training schedule each day.
Helen is also great, she runs the front office, she returmed my calls/​messages promptly, answered all my questions about membership and pricing clearly, and super nice!
I believe there is one more co owner name Shanon that I haven’t interacted with but I sure she is just as fantastic!
Students: I love every training partner I worked with! Everyone I rolled with was technical and rolled safe. The training partners I rolled with here were high energy but still in control and didn’t try to injure me. People would match my strength but still put me to work! I am an older female Jiu Jitsu practitioner so I REALLY appreciated this aspect of the training.
I would highly recommend this gym for everyone! It’s a great family gym and also great if you are a competitor. When I move to Vegas I will be joining this gym no questions about it! I hope this review was helpful for anyone looking for a home gym or a gym to visit while you are in town. Also forgot to mention they are very welcoming to visitors and have visitor rates. Hands down the best instruction I’ve ever gotten and I’ve been around to other Bjj schools. Hector is the MAN! If you’ve got holes in your game (competitive or not), he’ll find them and help you tighten up your game. It’s humbling to roll with him the first time cause he’s all over you like fly on fly paper but, he’s awesome at breaking things down. Great at communicating and the place is big, got everything you need, and the staff treats you like family right off the bat – always taking care of your needs. My family trains here. My daughter is on the competition team at the age of 7 and she’s already a World Champion. Coach Hector has a way with children. He’s fantastic at communicating with kids and people in general and he’s meticulous about breaking down each and every movement down to a science. My daughter has been to a few other places in town and she’s gotten injured from poor supervision. We’re not worried here as we see that she’s in great hands. This system is great for people of all ages (total body conditioning and fitness indeed) but, for women, especially in terms of self-​defense. You don’t have to be limber to be able to do Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. We love it here. They cater to family’s and it’s such an awesome friendly atmosphere and environment. Clean, classy, and they’ve got separate men and women’s showers and locker rooms. Highly recommend this place!!!
