History
Established in 1939.
THE HISTORY
In 1939 Vega’s Curious and Antiques opened its doors on Guerrero Avenue, the main street connecting Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas, Mexico to Laredo, Texas, USA by way of an International Bridge crossing the Rio Grande. We specialized in French and Spanish home décor antiques from the old colonial Haciendas, jewelry, perfumes, and souvenir items.
In the 1940s, Mexico would see a boom in tourism, and in Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas, it was due largely to the Army /Airforce base in Laredo, Texas. One summer weekend in 1942, the base gave out a weekend pass to a large majority of its soldiers. They proceeded to walk across the US /Mexico International Bridge and economically-invaded Nuevo Laredo. The soldiers ate, drank, and purchased just about everything in the city that weekend. It was one of the best business weekends and the beginning of the Tourism Boom for Laredo, Texas and Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas.
And the rest is history.
