We just had John Haines stop by our house for an audit. He was knowledgable, professional, and thorough. He did a great job of identifying and explaining the issues that make us uncomfortable during the winter in spite of reliably large heating bills. He presented a menu of options for us to improve the performance and efficiency of the house. We are still considering what type of work we’d like to have done. I will provide an update if their contractors end up doing work on the house.

Dr. Energy Saver conducted an energy survey of my home. I had a $ 100 coupon from Consumers Energy that they honored. There was no additional charge. Their consultant, Will Gallmeyer, did a great job. He was courteous and very informative. The survey took about 3 hours and was very thorough. Will used some pretty sophisticated analysis equipment including infrared camera, manometer(to measure and control the pressure difference created by the test fan) and a CO analyzer. I found through analysis that my house has many leaks that are costing me energy dollars and comfort. The solutions proposed by Will were reasonable and I will consider doing them. I also looked at their web site to read their reviews and they were equally positive. I will comparison shop at other companies to see how their prices measure up for the proposed solutions. Based on Will’s performance, I am inclined to lean their way even if their prices are a bit higher. Lastly, there are rebates from Consumers Energy that they will apply for, that will come directly to me based on the work that is done.

Initially, we were quite happy with our energy audit from Dr. Energy Saver. Before the two guys left, we were told we’d receive a followup phone call and that if we went with their plan for us within seven days, we’d receive a 10% discount. So, they give you seven days to decide whether to go with their plan. Hubby received the call on the sixth day. He pointed out that he had not received the images from the infrared camera that the guy had promised to send as e-mail attachments. Hubby said he’d like to see their figures and go over them a bit before his final decision. Hubby is a mechanical engineer. He studied heat transfer, etc. in school. He wanted to understand the data that had been gathered. He did not receive what he wanted. After that, the Dr. Energy Saver guys have not returned his phone calls or his e-mails. I guess we didn’t jump through their hoops properly, and they’ve given us up for dead or something. We are very careful to stay off mailing lists. Shortly after our energy audit, we started to receive junk mail from companies that sell windows, insulation, etc. I can only guess that they got our address from Dr. Energy Saver. Hmmm. I can’t be totally sure, but I’m pretty sure that someone gave away our address. I had such high hopes for the Dr. Energy Saver guys. I expected that we’d have them arrange for someone to come do some attic insulation for us, but it seems like a dead end now. At least we have the printout of their energy upgrade plan for our house. We can handle some of the work ourselves, then hire someone to do the rest. Since we’re not going through Dr. Energy Saver to hire the workers, we won’t get the rebates from DTE for the upgrades. You see, after all the upgrades are complete, we’d have to have Dr. Energy Saver come back and do an «after» energy audit. We’ll go ahead with the upgrades, but on our own terms. We definitely lack the blind faith required to do it the way that was planned out for us.

I had an energy audit completed for my home last year. The person in charge of doing the Audit(John) was not very organized and did not follow up with me as he promised. I paid to have the audit done and he was having trouble with his computer and could not print the Audit out for me to review. He stated that he would print it out and send it to me and he never did. I then contacted their office requesting a copy of the Audit and it never came in the mail like they stated. A year later I decided to have insulation blown into my attic as was suggested by John through the Audit. I again called the company asking for the Audit numbers(R value) that was determined to be in my attic. They stated John would drop it off at my house the next day. Low and behold John never came to drop it off. I became very frustrated with this company as I did not get what they were paid to do. A week later I received the Audit paperwork in the mail and it was incomplete. No R values for my Attic??? The company I had come do the new insulation in the attic explained I would be eligible for a rebate from Consumers do to my installation of new insulation and needed to have Dr. Energy come back out to do the«Post Audit» blower door test as should have been included. Dr. Energy would not come out and do the Post Audit because they said they did not do the insulation install themselves. Now I am having trouble getting a rebate. This company did nothing but cost me money and are a bunch of Scammers. Don’t use them!

Don’t do it. I had two major issues with my house; the pipes in my kitchen froze every winter and my crawlspace was exposed so my front room was cold every winter. I got talked into a full package(hey, why not, right?) and they assured me that my crawlspace and pipes would be sewn up tight. NOT! The Consumer’s Energy inspector came back and we went over the work they did in the basement. He and I were both shaking our heads in disbelief at the total lack of effort in sealing off my crawlspace from the elements. The attic looked great, because that was what *they* WANTED to do. What *I* NEEDED them to do, sucked. My pipes STILL freeze. They’ve been out twice now to «fix» them and the last guy said he «patched some holes». WTF?! If they’d done the job right the first time, there shouldn’t be any holes left to patch, right? Now they won’t do anything for me because once they actually looked at my problem, after I’ve complained 2 winters in a row, they realize my walls aren’t insulated. HELLO? My house was built in 1885, of course the walls aren’t insulated, that’s a no-brainer. Now, after this«polar vortex» freeze we just had, the pipe finally burst and when I called out a plumber he took one look at the job Dr. Energy Saver did and walked away. Instead of insulating the pipes from the *outside* where the cold is, they covered them up from the *inside*. Not only did this make it *more* likely that the pipes would freeze(as they weren’t getting the heat from the house anymore}, but it effectively closed off any access to the pipes and now the entire wall needs to be removed to fix this mess. I’m furious!!! Now I need to pay a proper plumber to fix the pipes properly, my crawlspace is still freezing and I’m still paying off the work they did! Don’t hire these jokers, it will cost you much, much more than you think!
