A-1 Roofing of Lancaster

I used this company for two very different roofing jobs on two different properties at the same time in 2007. I was looking for a quick, cheap installation as both jobs revolved around house settlements. Both jobs were very different in nature — one consisted of a metal first floor roof replacement and upper level rubber roof repair and the second was a shingle tear out/​replacement on a garage and a second floor metal roof replacement. Although I wasn’t present for either installation or checked the quality of their work no problems were reported when the homes were inspected. I will say with these two jobs I had only gotten a few estimates and never meet with any of the other contractors personally. A1 was the lowest of them all by several hundred dollars per job. In fact I didn’t meet Denny, the owner of A1 until the day the shingles were delivered only to find them the wrong color which he quickly corrected.
With that being said when I needed a whole house shingle replacement on yet another property in 2012 I immediately called him. Again I didn’t meet with him personally as he slipped an estimate thru the mail slot but it wasn’t detailed. The price was low for the scope of work to be preformed. I didn’t realize just how low until I got seven other estimates. He was a few THOUSAND lower. I even priced out the cost of materials myself and could not fathom how he could offer me this price. I questioned him several times about the price and had him rework the estimate several ways including a breakdown of material and labor and more detail about the installation and warranty. He never had a problem and was happy to accommodate my requests.
Although he was very willing to comply the fact that he was so much lower than the others still had me concerned so I did some research on the internet. From what I discovered although he did have some happy customers (myself included from my 2007 installations) he still had a lot of negative reviews, mostly centering around workmanship and honoring the warranty. Not only was he not a member of the BBB but he had several complaints filed against him in the past few years. With this being said I decided not to risk it and went with another contractor.
Because I did use him in 2007 as a very rushed and under-​educated customer I am basing this review on that experience. In any case it’s wise to ALWAYS check references, reviews, and licensing before putting out a deposit with any contractor.
