Review a convenience store? Well this one, yes, because there are a couple of things you should know about it. Firstly, even though it looks like it’s in a decent part of town, being adjacent to Ocean County Park and at the beginning of the strip where most of the car dealerships in Lakewood are, this Quick Chek is not. Just around the bend up New Hampshire is one of the worst neighborhoods in a town riddled with bad neighborhoods, a place where people get shot from time to time. Being the nearest convenience store, it draws a lot of these people. You can be forgiven if you spend your few minutes inside wondering if someone is going to come in and shoot up the place, or if you walk quickly back to your car so as not to get jacked. Secondly, they have very good fried chicken and associated offerings in the back. It’s a little pricey, at least compared to my expectations of what things bought in a convenience store should cost, but it is hot and relatively fresh, as are the sides such as the mac and cheese or battered potato wedges. This makes it a nice stop en route to the park to pick up a picnic lunch.
