Specialties
Karate for children, adults and families in Lakewood, Colorado. Since 1970, Denwakan Karate has offered traditional Japanese karate (Wado).
We focus on the fundamentals — posture, stances, kicks and punches, blocks, hip movement and we emphasize mental and physical balance, as well as learning to be calm and relax our muscles. We also teach traditional Japanese katas as well as sparring.
The students are there to learn karate and we value the time, energy and effort that our Sensei puts in to sharing his wealth of knowledge and skills.
History
Established in 1970.
Sensei Kurobane is an 8th degree black belt with more than 50 years experience. In 1962 – 63 he was a member of the All Japanese Wado-kai championship teams. In 1970, his Sensei — Master Mano — encouraged him to come to the US to promote cultural exchange and share the Wado-kai style. Sensei Kurobane has been teaching at Denwakan Karate in Lakewood, Colorado ever since.
We welcome new students of all ages as well as families. We offer classes for both children and adults and even offer a family class. Most of our classes include students at all levels from white belt to black belt. This allows our senior students to help our new students learn the techniques more quickly.
Denwakan sponsors and manages the annual Wa no Kizuna Invitational Tournament in every April in Lakewood Colorado.
Wado (which means Way of Peace) was founded by Hironori Otsuka and was recognized as an independent style of karate in 1934.
