History
Established in 2011.
Dave’s Island Instruments was opened by David Beery as a logical extension of his steel drum manufacturing business, Smarty Pans, which has been in business since 2001. Dave has a love for island music and decided to feature his hand made, hand tuned steel drums along side a wall of fine ukuleles, and other island style instruments.
The goal of Dave’s Island Instruments is to provide the community with a variety of unique, well made, island style instruments; to provide its customers with professionalism and knowledge; to provide community events that educate and entertain; and to provide lessons and service for those who seek it.
Meet the Business Owner
David B.
Business Owner
David Beery grew up in the city of Whittier, CA. He attended La Habra High School and later graduated with a BA in percussion from CSU Long Beach in 1993. While at CSULB, Dave learned to play steel drums under the direction of the late, Dr. Michael Carney. Dave also performed for more than a decade with Dr. Carney’s professional steel drum band, Pandemonium.
While attending CSULB, Dave learned to manufacture and tune steel drums. He began selling his handmade instruments in 1993. He worked at North High School in Torrance, CA for 9 years and was the acting Band Director there for 4 of those years.
In 2001 Dave decided to stop teaching and open his own steel drum manufacturing business, Smarty Pans.
Around 2005, Dave became enamoured with ukuleles! He purchased several for himself and began writing and recording numerous original songs.
In 2011 Dave learned to make Hand Pans.
With all of this love for island music, Dave’s Island Instruments was born in 2011.
