The White Mountains Trail System, 200+ miles of trails for hikers, mountain bikers, equestrians, trail runners, cross country skiers, nature photographers, geochachers and others, is in the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests of NE Arizona. Major trails are built as loops, with connector trails linking them. All trail maps are available for free on and all traihead locations are easily accessible on forest service roads without 4wheel drive vehicles. The WMTS is about 3 hours drive from Phoenix or about 5 hours from Albuquerque. Most trails are rated as moderate in difficulty by the USFS and range in elevation from around 6300 to over 8500 ft. These trails are part of one of the largest Ponderosa Pine forests in the US, and users often see wildlife including: elk, deer, turkey, javalina, antelope, etc. The WMTS is one of the finest available in a beautiful national forest setting.
