J & L Insulation Inc.

This is a follow-​up to my review of their estimating and quote appointment, which was excellent. They performed the work this morning and it went quickly and smoothly. The crew was on time, polite, and efficient. The protected the air and floor, as needed, and cleaned up well afterwards. Again, I highly recommend J&L.

Can’t speak to any of the derogatory reviews but our experience was excellent!
Here’s what was top-​notch:
–Communication from the outset — all appointments kept
–Price was in-​line or lower than bidders I wouldn’t hire
–Patience when it took longer than expected
–Care with all the new gadgets I had installed in my attic
–Results — A great job well handled!

I had a very poor experience with this company. The initial estimate process was very good, we were satisfied enough that we decided not to get another quote and just hire them to do our insulation. The problems started the actual day of the install. Their bid had underestimated the amount of time it would take for a 2-​man crew to do the job I hired them for. The crew’s supervisor had a temper problem and started blaming me for the amount of time it would take his crew to do the work (when I’m the one who signed the paper and said yes based on what they wrote), and when their crew couldn’t finish the job on time it was hard to get them to come back to finish the work. They were blaming it on scheduling issues. I can’t recommend them, not after what I went through. I’m sure Lowes or Home Depot would have given me a similar estimate and the delivery of the product might have been of better quality compared to what I saw. But I trusted them from the beginning, and I paid the «poor service» price in the end. Kudos and praises goes to the crew, they were working hard hour after hour, but its unfortunate the the company underestimated the amount of work required, that it wasn’t enough for a 2-​man job to do this and didn’t give them the necessary and appropiate tools to do the job. The work actually required 3 or 4 people and proper functional equipment, and they were being overworked. Get another bid from a 2^nd or 3^rd company before you hire them.

Their estimator, Rob came to my home on Friday, June 26, 2015 at 10:30AM. We are doing a major remodel and I explained to Rob that the insulation job is holding up the HVAC, and electric work. Rob assured me that he would have the bid to me that same late afternoon. Here I am on Monday at 2:15, left 3 messages for Rob, no return calls. Spoke to the office gal at about noon and they don’t know where their estimator is and they don’t call me back. So I call them back and ask for the owner to call me. I feel like I’m begging for their business. Not the way it should be.
Rob called me finally at 2:20 and said he had too many appointments on Friday and couldn’t get mine done, but that he has it right in front of him. He said he would have it to me in 1 hour. I asked him why would it take an hour if you have it in front of you? He said well it’s not written up yet. So, it’s not done yet…

Are you kidding me? These guys were beyond patient with me, made a couple mistakes. came back to fix it and didnt charge me extra.
They had to come on 2 different occasions because the job required it as well.
NO complaints. and job exceeded my expectations.
Not only that, I had another contractor screw something up. and I asked them for some extra insulation. and they brought it to me so I can fix the screw up my other contractor did!
DO NOT GO ANYWHERE FOR YOUR INSULATION NEEDS, TRUST ME. I“m not the easiest guy to work with. and I know they gave me a good deal because the next estimate was $ 500 more!
You guys rock!

J&L insulated the attic of my home recently. They gave an excellent quote, and even adjusted it lower when there were sections of the attic they couldn’t get to. They showed up as promised and did a pretty good job of keeping the place clean.

Estimator Lady came to house, was friendly and seemed knowledgeable. Stated they use tarps and plastic to keep the insulation removal and install contained, and from dirtying the walls and floors (which is not what actually happened). We wanted our insulation removed because we know we had a rat problem and lots of droppings. Estimator Lady said she didn’t think we needed it removed but would quote it anyway.
The quote was in-​line with one other quote we received; our third quote was a specialty vendor and was $ 2k more. We choose to move forward with the removal and install of new insulation based on other’s reviews of the company.
Removal
I was immediately put-​off by the customer service of the removal team. I answered the door and Guy A asked if he could use the bathroom. Then a second guy asked to use the bathroom. There was no real introduction or discussion of how the job was going to work. I asked Guy A if he would be using tarps to protect the floor, he said they do but he forgot them. I said he could borrow mine. This was irritating because Estimator Lady said they use lots of tarps to protect the floor and walls from the hoses and to keep things clean. Then I asked Guy A about the plastic that goes around the attic entry, he said he’s never used it before. Again, this was irritating because Estimator Lady said they put an ET type protector thing around the opening to keep everything clean. Third, Guy A asked if he could borrow our step ladder since he only had an 8 foot ladder, sure. At this point I was concerned the job was not going to go well. Later that day, Guy A asked to borrow our duct tape because he ran out. I called and left a message with the company’s answering machine, voicing my concern. I did not get a call back from them regarding these issues.
I knew there were rat droppings in the attic, and I am certain Estimator Lady did not warn the workers of this. I could here them gruffing and swearing in frustration in the attic about rat droppings, and how he’s going to run out of bags.
After the initial issues, I could hear them vacuuming and making progress. It seemed as if they were spending a good amount of time making sure everything was removed properly. Although in the end my husband would give them a B– for effort in the removal. They worked until about 2:30pm and did about ¾ the removal. Guy A said he needed to leave for the dump so they could get there by 4pm. He said they would be by in the morning to finish up and the install guys should take 1 – 2 hours.
Later the Project Manager called and said they will finish the removal on Day 2, then spray the decontamination spray, let that sit over the weekend, then come back for Day 3 to blow-​in. I asked, so you can’t do it all tomorrow and he said he has two trucks one is already going one way and the other going the other way, then I started to say something, and he cut in… okay thanks bye (in not those words), but I felt cut off and it was weird. I called right back, got a voicemail box, and left a message to call me about Day 3. Project Manager called back and said he was having phone issues, but I still felt like I was being put-​off.
Install of new insulation
Day 3 was a scheduling issue. At 6:50am Project Manager called, asked to confirm they are blowing-​in R30 fiberglass, I said yes. This was irritating because I would assume the Project Manager should know what the job entails. Then he asked what time he said he would be there. I said 8, he said unfortunately he won’t be able to get here until 11am. He had one job cancel, one job change, now has to do one before me, etc. I said so there is no way you can be here at 8, no. I had to re-​arrange my work schedule to be there for the whole day instead of the half day as expected.
They arrived about 11:30, set up plastic on floor and hoses, and did a quick look around house for vents and recessed lighting to make sure they insulated around these areas. Took about 2 hours, and they ended up being pretty clean inside, although I did sweep the garage and driveway of insulation when they were gone.
My husband hasn’t had a chance to crawl up in the attic to check out the install job.
Final Thoughts
They did an okay job for an expected price. Their customer service could be much better, an introduction when I open the door, and a description of how the process works is important. All materials and supplies should be provided by the contractor, and service should be provided as promised (keeping the house clean and protected). They could have been more detailed in the removal. As far as I can say, the insulation is working, which is expected. I would not recommend them to friends. You never know what you are going to get when you try new contractors despite all the reviews you read.

J & L provided us with a competitive estimate, and then subsequently the work was performed in a very timely manner. We had them blow in new insulation in our two separate attics. They were clean and professional, and we would highly recommend them for insulation work.

I called them, they came by and gave me an estimate, a crew came by and installed the insulation, and that’s all I could ask for. Good price for good work.

I had a great experience with J & L. I contracted them to blow in insulation into my attic after meeting with another company that was overpriced and pushy. I met with April for an estimate and was given an honest, straight forward quote with no sales pitch or run around, not to mention the reasonable price. The installer was on time, finished much earlier than I expected, and left no mess in my home upon completion. The work quality was great! I would recommend them to anyone needing insulation in their home!

J&L Insulation insulated both our new home and then our two story new garage. They were an excellent rate, showed up as promised and completed the jobs as promised. They left the property clean. They gave us some good advice on how to achieve our goals and save some money. Very professional. I am in Julian and it can be challenging to get quality contractors to come up and I highly recommend J&L Insulation!

J and L insulation is a really good company to go with when considering insulation. I had them remove an attic full of insulation to have an AC unit installed and then I used them to put new blown in insulation in. They showed up on time. Didn’t leave a mess and their prices are really good. I would recommend them to anyone who needs insulation.

At least five contractors gave me a bid for the work that I needed done: about 1000 square feet of insulation under my floors, and one wall between living space and an unfloored crawl space. J&L’s estimate was by far the most well-​thought-​out and understandable, and was a reasonable price compared to the ones that were much higher and much lower.
Getting the estimate required two visits, and this was after it came to me that they or I may not have specified the work properly. After the second visit I was certain they and I could be happy with the bid.
My work also required removal of insulation that had been improperly installed, and the installation of both blown-​in and batt insulation. They got the work done on the schedule promised, and their staff were friendly and professional.
The technicians did have to be asked to clean up after themselves more than they had done without asking, but they did that cheerfully and well. That points up how good an idea it is to be present before and during, as well as at the end of a job.

J&L Insulation provided attic and wall insulation for our small-​to-​medium sized house. The office and on-​site personnel were friendly and cooperative. They worked around our schedule which involved other work being completed on our residence. The on-​site folks were effecient, quiet (as possible with the blower) and picked up after themselves. Price was not inexpensive but competitive. I would use this group again, and would recommend them to others.

We are very happy with our new attic insulation. J&L was prompt and professional. We were given good advice about the recommended scope of the project. Their prices were very reasonable. We noticed the difference in comfort right away. We are confident that we will be much more comfortable this coming summer.
