About Us

John Dunlop, a native Australian who once owned a shoe repair shop just down Pennsylvania Avenue from the White House, figured the recession was a perfect time to build a business in Oregon.

Back in Washington, D.C., during the 1980s and 1990s, Dunlop’s clientele included powerful politicians and famous performers. He was the cobbler of choice for the National Theater, Ford’s Theater and Kennedy Center costume departments.

At Lake Grove Shoe Repair, his customers come from all walks of life. While he gets residents of some of the region’s wealthiest neighborhoods, he also sees environmentally conscious clients focused on reusing their possessions and, of course, penny-​pinching customers just trying to make their shoes, boots, luggage and purses last until the economy rebounds.

When he opened Lake Grove Shoe Repair at 16 144 Boones Ferry Road, his shop immediately found clients.

Lakegrove Shoe Repair is the only spot I take my shoes. Other family members of mine have also taken their shoes here and had excellent results.
John does a great job attending to the areas of need and fixing them so it doesn’t happen again, using sturdy, quality materials. His prices are very affordable and turn-​around is quick.
Don’t toss out your favorite shoes or push them to the back of your closet bc you can’t wear them, take them here and you can get them fixed good as new!

DO NOT TAKE YOUR SHOES HERE if you have any intention of getting them back. I used to take my shoes here all the time, was a very loyal client and even recommended him to friends. The last pair I took there I forgot about and went back to get them and he told me he had no idea where they went and probably gave them away. He never even called to remind me before he gave them away. They were expensive Nordstrom shoes my boyfriend had given me for Christmas so not only am I out the $ 40 I paid him for the repair but out a good pair of shoes. He showed zero remorse and even pushed me aside, made me wait while he helped two other women who came on after me and ordered me to look around his shop for them. I take full responsibility that I forgot about the shoes but I don’t think I am the first person who has ever forgotten shoes or dry cleaning they have dropped off and would expect the business owner to keep good enough records to call his clients before giving their property away, or at least care about returning clients. I feel like he stole from me, I did not pay him to give MY shoes away/​sell them, whatever he did with them.

Great job and service.
I first went to another local shoe repair and they were not helpful nor were they particularly friendly. It was a quick «…no; we can’t help you…» Then, a neighbor recommended Lake Grove to me and I’m thankful for her recommendation. The repair was quick, more than reasonably priced, and all with a smile and thank you. I will gladly suggest this cobbler to friends and neighbors.

I took my roller skates to Lake Grove Shoe Repair to have the right boot stretched a bit near my little toe. The customer service was phenomenal, and my skate was finished just a few hours later. I am extremely impressed with the result, and the service was very affordable.
While a roller skate is not your everyday «shoe,» they did a really terrific job. I know that if I need other shoes repaired, this will be the place I take them. The two gentlemen in the store were very pleasant to talk with, and I couldn’t be happier with how comfortable my skate is now!

This is THE place to take your shoes or other leather work for repairs. John does amazing work. He’s resoled riding boots for me, repaired several pairs of shoes I thought were beyond hoe and has even done a few bridle repairs.
I’ve always believed that it’s worth it to buy better shoes and leather goods and make the effort to repair them, so I’ve dealt with many cobblers in many towns over the years. Lake Grove Shoe Repair is the best of them all.
I wish I could post a photo, because my 12-​year-​old riding boots look BRAND NEW after getting new soles and some love from Lake Grove. I live in Seattle now, but am headed to Lake O this weekend. (And making time to drop off some shoes for new heels and another pair of boots!)

I had some new rubber pads put on the heels of my one year old Corso boots since I tend to drag my heels a lot and they were pretty scuffed up in general. Wow! They look like brand new boots. All shiny and polished! I thought $ 20 up front was pretty expensive at first, but now that I see the finished product I definitely will be a repeat customer.

Great and honest service + excellent workmanship — I’m thrilled with the result! I sent in a couple pairs of boots, some wedges that needed replacement clasps and major cleaning, and some old tory burch flats that were totally worn out on the bottom and starting to tear at the back of the heel. He re-​soled and weatherproofed my boots, completely fixed my flats (and added a tiny bit of a heel so the back doesn’t get so scuffed), and fixed my wedges completely. Everything looks great and I will definitely be going back (and telling my friends to) if anything else ever needs repairs!

Excellent and honest work! I bought a pair of used riding boots online. When I got them, the calf was super narrow. I assumed I would have to have a zipper installed on it, but Lake Grove Shoe Repair wanted to try stretching it before drastically changing the boot. I am so happy they suggested that because it worked and it was only $ 20! The work was done within a week as promised. I highly recommend them!

My dog started chewing on a brand new pair of shoes, and the first cobbler we took the shoes to said «forget it.» Saw Lake Grove Shoe Repair and tried there. He said, «leave them and let me think about it.» $ 20 later, almost as good as new. True cobbler artistry!!!
