When my son was diagnosed in the autism spectrum; I have no idea what this meant nor have I had any clue on how to help him. I did not know where to start.
I followed the doctors’ advice and got a second opinion and then started the whirly word of providers. My biggest mistake was I took the first service provider without questions and no-​how. I had the impression that the younger the child getting intervention the better his chances are.
My son received speech therapy in a month of finding out his frailties. It took almost 6 months (I think) to get an ABA provider. So I was ecstatic just to have one.
Then the troubles that came along:
* I had a conversation with the supervisor on my son’s infirmities, course of action, programs that should be in place, etc. I specifically remember the supervisor mentioning they are providing most of the materials (sad to say: I only saw playdo, and cut out plain paper). In their defense they also mentioned I might have to provide materials for my son. But I did not expect the limited materials brought in. As a mother I felt like my son was not getting enough learning supplies and since I agreed to provide some of the resources I just got as much ABA specific toys and learning materials I could get my hands on without knowing what they really need. I even spent two days creating pictures cutout of our family faces to get him familiarized with. I also made match up toys. To summarize I provide a tool box for my son since the company cant.
* The turnover with therapist and supervisor are horrible. In two years my son has seen 3 supervisor, 6 therapist. But according to them this would help my son be more socialize since he can’t have the same therapist for more than 3 months. He always gets the newbie, the one without any experience once they have experience they get transferred.
* With as much employee turn-​over comes miscommunication— I have a therapist who comes at the house even though I specifically told the supervisor the Thursday ONLY are 2 sessions at the house. I have therapist arriving late at daycare and leaving early since they have to go to a different client. Isn’t my son also a client?
* Bill — I have an accounted days and hours on my bill; according to them I am not supposed to see. I have not even tackle that one.
I think I just had it — I am a very patient person. But I had enough I am now finding a different ABA and I will be more vigilant in interviewing the new provider.
I am not here to insult the company I just want new clients or soon to be client be informed. Maybe I am hoping that I am the only one who had this horrid experience and it would not repeat itself since having an son that is in the autism spectrum is already challenging enough.
