West Maui Safety Check

The owner is a great guy. Very helpful. He even offered to let me borrow his tools to apply my new plates.

Was in and out within 10 minutes. Location isn’t the nicest, right back by the Mongoose.
Still, had a good experience and was out of there very quickly.

Thank goodness for Unilocal because I wouldn’t have found this place because I’m from the other side of the island and had no clue where to find a safety check place. Followed the map on Unilocal and found them very easily to find (also with the help of their big red safety check sign posted on a tree.)
Those who were treated badly probably went in with a bad attitude in the first place. These guys aren’t getting paid any more than they regularly are if they give you friendly service. I went in with a friendly attitude and received fast and friendly service. It’s as simple as that. Like the old saying goes, «Treat others the way you want to be treated.»
5 stars for fast, friendly, and inexpensive service. ($ 20 cash only)

I love how efficient these guys are. They know what they’re doing. They have always treated me with respect. But then I always treat them with respect as well. They don’t take well to demanding and impatient people. This is not a fancy high-​priced shop. Leave your bad attitude at home and you will have a good experience.

Have gotten my inspection here twice now. Both times has been quick and painless. They are efficient and fair in pricing. $ 20 and I didn’t have to waste time and gas money to drive to the other side. Do you get a smile, cookies and a cup of tea? No, but he does the job. Good grief, its like people want a reach-​around with their safety inspection.

As mentioned above, I would not normally rate a safety check inspection business on Unilocal,but felt compelled to do so after reading some of the comments left before me that I happened to stumble upon when looking up the phone number to this place.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion and the right to post a negative review. As such, I will dust off my soap box to say this: there are different kinds of services in this society and they cannot all be judged with the same degree of standards. There are those services that are a privilege that you seek out and choose to partake in, such as a meal at a restaurant, a hotel room for a vacation or buying something frivolous in a retail store. Then there are those that are a necessity to go on with your day-​to-​day life, such as getting your license renewed at the DMV, applying for a passport at the Post Office or getting a safety check.
For those services in the first category, they exist as a luxury and an avenue to spend your hard-​earned money, so you are absolutely entitled to be as particular as you wish and expect top notch personal interaction, quality product and service.
On the other hand, for those services in the second category, shouldn’t an honest transaction, competency of service and a timely turnaround be the real measures? I have visited West Side Safety Check for the last three years in a row, and yes, perhaps Pete and his squad will never get an award for delivering above expectation service, but I tell you this: he’s been there for over a decade for a reason: his prices are fair, he doesn’t use bogus decals and he’s never gotten any heat for passing non-​compliant vehicles.
As such, I’m leaving a 5-​star rating: as one reviewer said, if you’re looking for a feel good safety check experience, perhaps somewhere on the South or Central side is better suited for you? I’ll save my gas money for my next meal, which I much rather review anyway.

Pete may not be the most personable, but he does his job and does it pretty well. If you don’t like what he has to say, don’t go there.

Yeah, I have to agree with above statements. I think the guy’s name is Peter and he definitely has no customer service skills. I stopped in after being referred to him from the place around the corner (Juan’s, in which I can say that shop was extremely polite and helpful — unfortunately doesn’t do safety checks). Because I had my Geico insurance card on my iphone he was unable to do the safety check, stating he needed the paper copy to take a picture. WTF — the card is now digital and your looking at it. It’s one thing to be afraid of technology, fine reject it all you want, but please do so without being a pain in the ass to the public at large. I’m driving to the other side.

Quick, but rude. All I really want is a car experience where I don’t get ripped off and the people are nice. Is that too much to ask? Price is right at this place, they were super fast, too, which works. One man was helpful and considerate since we just moved here and weren’t quite sure how it all worked.
The other man was downright rude and anti-​social. My husband just wanted to know how many days he had to get his sticker after the DMV. We already gave them the money, so they weren’t interested in helping us anymore. Short, annoyed answers like we were stupid. Then he rolled his eyes and said «Next!» I know it must be frustrating to deal with such a repetitive, boring job, but come on!!!
