Extended Horizons Scuba

Had a couple really nice dives with these guys from Mala pier. One during the day and none at night. It was the first time we had been diving in a year (shame on us) so these were great refresher type dives but what a great spot! Saw a ton — frogfish, eels, white tip, nudibranchs. Glad we discovered it thanks to this crew. Heading out tomorrow for a couple more tanks before we have to head home. Look forward to diving with them again next time we are back in Maui!

The team at Extended Scuba was great. My dive with Alan was incredible. We did shore dives at Black Rock in the morning and could hear the whales singing. Lots of eels, turtles, and a wide range of Hawaii’s tropical fish. The highlight was a white mouth eel with two cleaner shrimp doing their thing and an octopus. Then we did Mala pier and saw 3 white tip sharks and a lot of juvenile turtles. Even with 20+ mph winds the visibility below was good. The gear was in great shape and very clean. Black Rock is good when you get past the first wave and Mala is a bit more physically challenging with 50 yards of shallow coral to hike over. Unfortunately we had to miss the Cathedral dive, but everyone on Maui and Lanai rave about it. If you are in Lahaina, I highly recommend Erik, Alan, and the entire crew at Extended Horizons.

With out a doubt Erik and team members of Raquel, Melissa, Mike, Keith, Allen, Ashley have their process well thought out. As a customer all you have to do is show up and enjoy. the Lanai dive sites are among the best in the world and we keep coming back to Maui and EHS just for the Cathedrals I like the idea of powering the boat w/​100% recycled french fry oil from MacDonald’s Great atmosphere between dives w/​small breakfast of bagels and fruit. Do not miss the Malaa pier dive. It is a walk in that is manageable large turtles, eagle rays and sand sharks all over the place.

Me and a friend went on a 2 tank dive yesterday and had a blast. The sites were just beautiful, the dive masters were excellent and our tour group was small. I personally hadn’t been diving in years they made me feel very comfortable about jumping back in.

Fantastic experience. This was my first time scuba diving– did a discovery five in about 30′ of water off the beach after a 30 min classroom session. Very knowledgeable instructor with a lot of passion for diving. You won’t go wrong with these guys.

We have been diving with Extended Horizons for 20 years. They are one of the best dive operators we have had the pleasure of diving with. Eco-​friendly, SAFE, FUN. Diving Lanai is a great, our crew Captain Raquel, Ashley and Victoria made the day run smoothly and we all had great dives. They are very good at explaining marine animal behaviors and found a lot of great critters including (no jinx intended) harlequin shrimp with a sea star farm! We always dive with them when on Maui!

This is the best dive operation we have had the pleasure of diving with. They bring new meaning to «full service». The dive masters are incredibly knowledgeable and are expert naturalists as well as divers. I cannot recommend Extended Horizons enough!

Went out with EHS on Wednesday 12÷2÷15. It was a great experience for me. I enjoyed the smaller group (9 of us I believe) but there is not a lot of extra room on the boat, but is manageable.
The Staff (captain Raquel, and two Dive Masters: Mike & Ashley) were awesome. They do a great job of remembering everyones names and getting to know everyone as best they can. It is nice they ask about Dive experience (which of course is important) and what you would like to see specifically. I of course as for the impossible (Monk Seal)!
We went to No Name Paradise and Second Cathedrals. They were both great spots and did not disappoint.
I was convinced to use steel tanks as they provide a little extra time, but it was not needed in hindsight as I came up with about 1,000 PSI after each dive, but I guess it was better than having to come to the surface earlier than everyone else (but I don’t suck in air all that much) but it did cost me $ 10/​tank extra.
We did see a large pod of spinner dolphins on the way back (100 – 150 by estimate). We also saw a couple of humpback whales as early arrivals for the season!

We had an absolutely awesome experience with Extended Horizons! Noe was extremely informative and patient! My wife and I have not been diving before and the entire experience was first class! From the pre-​dive instruction to the help I needed getting comfortable with the equipment, the instructor made it easy to enjoy the beautiful waters in Maui! We will definitely come back to Extended Horizons.

Wow what service!
At the time of writing this review, I had about 80 dives under my belt. Coming to Maui on vacation with family, diving wasn’t my main goal but I did want to spend one day to check out what Maui had to offer in terms of diving. I was mainly looking for a dive operation that was full service and helped set up gear for me so I didn’t really have to worry about it, safety was a priority, and knowledgable staff. Extended horizons definitely exceeded my expectations. I was staying at a resort on Kanapalli beach and the boat dock was about 2 miles from my resort, so very convenient!
Experience:
We met at the Mala boat ramp in Lahaina around 630 AM (lots of free parking) and was ready to leave the dock around 715 AM. The excellent crew had all the gear setup already. We made a smooth 45 minute channel cross off the shore of Lanai. During our guides got to know us by experience/​expectations, with this information they split our groups up accordingly. By this time they all knew our names as well which made it feel more personal. On a side note we saw a super pod of around 200 – 300 spinner dolphins off the shore of Lanai crossing the channel!
With this information, we started with our first dive at Secret cove (apparently an old filming site for a Charlies Angels TV episode). Michael was an excellent guide and he quickly pointed out a lot of the endemic creatures to Hawaii. From our predive conversation he remembered I was interested in seeing smaller/​hidden critters and he was always trying to look for such creatures. On this dive we found a commersons frog fish that was probably one of the largest ones I’ve seen. I’ve seen orange/​red ones, this one was more of a whitish greenish color. See picture. This was a great dive to start out with especially since I hadn’t been diving in a while. Coral bleaching is unfortunately evident here, however there is still a decent a mount of healthy coral. We were looking for menpachi in the small caves but didn’t see any this time around. I missed out on the sergeant major damselfish guarding its eggs because I wasn’t paying attention. There were plenty of small swim throughs on this dive. Total dive time around 45 minutes. During our surface interval we had a continental breakfast of bagels, fruit, spreads. A nice touch was the personalized nalgene bottles (not to keep) for environmental purposes, that were constantly restocked.
As soon as we got on board, Raquel, Mike and Victoria were hard at work and switched out all of our gears for us. I just had to stand at the bow of the ship and watch the whale in the distance (rare this time of year).
Our second dive was one of the most memorable dive’s I’ve been on. It was the Second Cathedral (II). At the beginning of the day they asked if there were any dive sites we really wanted to see and I mentioned this one, maybe they kept this in mind, but I was pumped to come here. This dive takes place in lava tubes underneath the ocean and there are plenty of swim through’s. What makes this place special is definitely the rock formations of the lava tubes, it was a very neat experience. At the beginning of the dive you descend down into a lava tube cavern and above you is a rare black coral (fan shaped). We also saw a ton of cools stuff on this trip, including a tiger cowrie, gold lace nudibranch (endemic!), bandit angel (endemic!), regal slipper lobster (beautiful), tons of menpachi, sponge crab (unique) and a baby green sea turtle. We were also greeted by a huge school of beautiful blue stripped snapper (unfortunately this species is invasive). The other group had a rare siting of a white margin nudibranch laying eggs (picture was posted on their Facebook page)! Total dive time around 60 minutes. Kudos to my guide Mike for finding all this rare stuff, as well as taking my camera for a bit and taking pictures of my self (turtle selfie), and getting up closer to the rare stuff.
The ride back across the channel was slightly choppy but not bad. The crew again went over the stuff we saw and answered all our questions. Again the perspective and explanations were from naturalists so they were much more detailed.
Price for 2 tank guide is about 159, plus all the rental gear was another 40

Great experience for my first scuba dive. Josh was very patient with me. We went over the quick scuba dive overview and then he prepared our gear for us. I was able stay 30 feet under water for 36 minutes.
They are truly a full service. I will definitely consider to get certified now and ready to go back get my certification from Extended Horizons Scuba. Hopefully Josh will be my scuba dive master again!!!

We booked a Lanai morning dive with this dive op for a Saturday. Maui diving is expensive compared to the Caribbean waters in Mexico ($ 159/​person for 2 tank dive). We were excited to take a boat out to Lanai and finally dive some deeper waters (we had been doing shore dives on our own).
Boat: funny to see a boat out of water coming up the driveway as we waited at Mala Wharf. That was a sight you don’t see everyday.
Crew: We had Captain Joe with DMs Ashley and Noie that day. Both were really nice from the start, set up our gear. When we got on the boat, they both gave briefings then split us into groups. We were with Ashley, who was outgoing and personable and really nice. I could tell safety was her priority as well as identifying all these cool fish.
Sites: Our first dive site was Secret Cove, which took about 45 minutes to get to from Maui. Took the giant stride out and used the moor-​line to descend. You probably didn’t need to use the moor-​line, but I used it anyway. The briefing made this site sound really cool, with a max depth of about 75′. However, I found it to be a tad boring. There were cool looking corals but we basically followed a wall for 15 minutes and that was about it. Just went around in circles, staying close to the moor-​line.
Our second dive site was the 2^nd Cathedrals. Much, much better. This had cool tunnels to go through, awesome little caves with nooks and crannies to check out. But again, we did stay in the same spot for most of the dive, which was about 30 minutes. But this was a beautiful dive site which lots to see and lots of tunnels and passageways. Wish we could’ve explore more.
Both my husband and I came up with plenty of air left too. This dive op definitely plays it safe. My husband ascend both times with 1000 psi or more left over. We also didn’t venture out much either. I guess we were used to the drift dives in Cozumel where you’re not staring at the same thing for more than 2 – 3 minutes. Surface interval seemed shorter than it should’ve been. We are used to an hour SI but it seemed like 30 minutes or so. During the SI, there were bagels, water, juice, and fruit, which were great to snack on. I thought the boat was plenty big, and not cramped at all. It even had a toilet, which I’ve never seen. We saw some spinner dolphins on our ride back to Maui (which I unfortunately got very sea sick).

Can’t say enough good things about Extended Horizons Scuba. They are truly a full service scuba tour. All the gear is ready for you on the ship (bring your own if you want, we had our mask, fins, and snorkels).
We went on two Lanai dives, the first at Sergeant Major, and the second was First Cathedral. At Sergeant Major, we got to see 2 types of reef sharks, 7 – 11 crabs, and several endemic fish. The cathedrals are stunning to swim through, and an experience I will never forget. Noe was our guide and she was fantastic at helping to point out things we would have missed.
Being newly certified, my wife and I were nervous initially, as I knew we might go through our air faster than other divers, but the whole crew were very thorough in the procedures and Noe was helpful in checking in and getting those of us to the mooring line and ready to surface, while continuing on with those who had plenty of air.
Captian Joe was also very helpful in getting gear rinsed and setting you up for the second dive. I can’t wait to come back and do some more dives with Extended Horizons!

The staff and captain were really, really good and we enjoyed our dives (Carthaganian wreck and Mala Pier) very much. I only have good things to say about the guides, the dives, etc. It was truly easy – they handle all your gear and tanks and make it super easy. However there are a few things not to enjoy:
1. The boat is small! There is crowded seating elbow to elbow for 10 divers only. They put 11 or 12 on the boat so some are riding the ice chest. When gearing up or down half have to evacuate to the front of the boat to make space. This would be a premium experience for 6 divers but they probably couldn’t make any money doing it that way. Most of the boat were return divers so apparently they were OK with that.
2. Like others have said the snacks are kind of sparse and we got a lukewarm capri sun juice pouch. To save space they don’t have a big water cooler like most boats but they give each diver their own personal water bottle to use which is a nice touch (the water was cold!).
3. Parking sucks. You meet at the boat launch, where parking is limited, at least in the afternoon when I did my dives. At least one diver was unable to park here and had to drive elsewhere, find parking, and walk back. I got lucky after idling for 10 minutes and finally someone left.
Here is a PS and I didn’t ding for an additional star only because the staff was otherwise so nice: When you enter the boat you step down onto a big rubber mat and they have you take off your shoes, which they store until you disembark. They tell you they are letting you step onto the boat in your shoes because the ‘dock is so hot’. So when you leave they take some time to lay out the line of shoes real nice for us, but up on the far side (just 2 – 3 feet) of the dock, telling us again to ‘know which shoes are yours before you step onto the dock because it’s hot’. So our final experience with the dive company is to step barefoot onto a very hot, very grimy/​sandy/​dirty dock, with our gear in hand, where we then attempt to put our shoes on with nothing to grab onto or sit on, while the dock is hot and grimy. So now my feet are sandy and dirty (as now are the insides of my shoes), any gear or towel I put down on the dock while trying to put my shoes on is dirty, the dock was hot on my feet and I have gone from relatively happy to super annoyed in about 10 seconds! Terrible, terrible, terrible! How much better would it be for your guests to line up the shoes on the rubber mat in the boat? How much damage could possibly be done by shoes while exiting? Or if that won’t fly maybe put down some towels or a mat on the hot and sandy dock? That would be a big help! Please consider for your future guests as this is a terrible last impression after an otherwise relaxing day diving.

I’m a very experienced diver and have always loved Extended Horizons but hadn’t been diving with them in a few years. This weekend, I did the Lanai tour with Captain Eric, Noe, and Shawn. They were an incredible team. Noe and Shawn split the divers, so we only had 4 in our group — nice and small.
I never felt rushed and unlike many guides, I saw Noe constantly looking at us in case we found something we wanted to know more about. And towards the end of one dive, I had more air, so I was able to join the other guide as Noe ascended with my group.
Winds kicked up and could’ve been a hard trip back to Maui but Eric detoured to make a more comfortable ride and that boat was more than secure and steady. Eric’s experience makes anyone feel completely safe.
Diving off Lanai — cathedrals, Knob Hill, etc, are the best diving in the area and I highly recommend Extended Horizons.

Love our dives with Sean, Ashley, Victoria and Erik. Victoria was supposedly auditing operations that day so we had Ashley as our DM. She was great, although evidently alot less experienced than Victoria. On our second dive, she realised she forgot to change her tank and had to surface, leaving Victoria to be our guide instead. It was great because Victoria was very experienced and showed us lots of stuff underwater :)
Having dived with Extended Horizons and Maui Divers, this group definitely feels like they run a riskier operation. I’m not saying that they dive dangerously, or maybe Maui Divers are too safe, but they only do the safety stop at 700 psi. More than enough, I know, but Maui Divers do it at 1200. I’m not complaining though, because that means more time underwater! ;)
The whole operations is very green, they even use recyclable water bottles for water! Awesome :) They serve a simple bagels and cheese/​peanut butter meal on board along with juices and fruits. It was a very cozy operation, not to mention that the dive sites were super pretty!
Will definitely dive with them again! :)

I used Extended Horizons in mid February and had a phenomenal time! I loved the knowledge and detail that our guides were able to share with us! Not to mention incredible bottom time! Much longer than other operators in the area. Capt. Raquel, Noe, and Victoria took awesome care of us. We will definitely be using them again next February!
Also love their attention to being green and easy on the environment. Using local bio-​diesel boat and reusable personalized water bottles. Great touch! See you next year!

This is a great dive company. They are friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable. I was just slightly miffed when I was told to go up and do my safety stop with 1,200 psi remaining. Maybe I was misunderstood when I communicated my psi.
The snacks included fresh fruit and bagels with peanut butter, cream cheese, and juice in between dives. Oreos were provided after the 2^nd dive.
The boat was a decent size and had just enough room for the 10 or 12 divers on the boat.
The guides were extremely knowledgeable about the marine life in both behaviors and types of life. It provided extra enjoyment and depth to our experience.
I only wish dive charters in Hawaii didn’t have to be group lead. It must be a Hawaii rule because you dive on your own, with your buddy, in California. I find it annoying having people all around me while I dive. Since all the charters here do that, I don’t count it against extended horizons.
I would dive with them again.

My wife and I got scuba certified here. One legged Keith was our instructor and he KICKED ASS. The experience was mind blowing and his training was awesome. We wish to visit Maui again and go diving with Keith again. Cheers!
