Mt. Diablo Nursery & Garden is a small independent nursery specializing in friendly knowledgeable customer service. The nursery strives to meet the needs of local gardeners by filling special orders promptly and by offering free local delivery. Our focus is to promote healthy organic garden practices, products and information.

Our gift shop works to support the community by featuring local artists and artisans.

History

Established in 1950.

Mt. Diablo Nursery and Garden, located at the east end of Lafayette, was once called Harry’s Nursery. Harry Ide opened the Nursery in August of 1950 and operated the business, as well as did local landscaping jobs for over 30 years until his retirement in 1982. After his retirement, Jiro Nishimoto ran the nursery until Garth Jacober took over Harry’s Nursery in March 2007. The nursery was then renamed Mt. Diablo Nursery & Garden. Garth worked for Harry as a college student in the 1970“s and continued to work in the horticultural field for the next 30 years until he purchased the nursery.

Business Owner

Garth Jacober began his horticultural career by working with Harry Ide at Harry’s Nursery in 1976. He went on to work in the landscape and horticultural field for the next 30 years. Garth learned to care for and propagate camellia’s from David Feathers, a renowned camellia expert.

Garth still maintains his own private camellia garden of over 500 specimens, many of which are one of a kind. Garth became a master gardener in 1994 and continues to teach gardening classes, both at the nursery and for various local garden clubs.

This is an exceptional nursery! Friendly, welcoming vibe. The folks who work here are extremely knowledgeable and enjoy helping (Matt is the man)! They can assist you with any plant dilemma. They give great advice and are very creative when it comes to helping plan your garden.
The space is small, but if they don’t have a plant they will special order it. I have thrown a few out-​of-​the-​ordinary special orders at them, but they always find the plant in question and they arrive within a few days. Always beautiful specimens too!

If you want to talk to two real horticulturalist, whom love their job look no ruther. These two guys know what’s up, when it comes to the area (Lafayette) I’ve lived herefor the the last 5 years, and the deer always eat everything, but matt pointed out some plants, California lilacs, manzanita,& euphorbia, even yarrow. My front sunny hill side looks great and the deer have not touched a thing, even with out spraying. Great place for advice.

I got some great plants today, the guy there helped me pick ones that would bloom for fall, he told me one of them was a big draw for humming birds… sure enough as we were looking a humming bird buzzed around the bush he talked about. SOLD! there was also a cool little shop with vintage stuff in the far back, what a good find

Bought a 15 gallon fruit tree from them that I had a local landscaping company plant and it died progressively over the summer. It was a $ 100 pear tree that I planted 15 ft away from a very comparable size/​quality 15 gallon plum tree that I got at home depot for $ 35 a week later. The home depot tree grew 2– 3 feet over summer with very similar growing conditions and looks amazing while this one did not do nearly as well. I called the nursery twice about it. The first time about a month after it was planted and was told it may be a sign of the shock of being planted and to wait to see if it recovered. The next time was 2 – 3 months later after it was obviously not recovering. That time I spoke with a gentleman who I believe to be the owner from previous purchases and he told me I must have over or under watered it… which was not my case considering the fact that the HD tree had very similar care instructions and did very well. He was very defensive to condescending at times on the phone and said they weren’t covering the costs because «I waited too long». Which was their company’s initial recommendation when I first called. Now I am at almost a $ 200 loss total for labor, mulch, dirt, and tree. I understand that occasionally plants die but I would expect better customer service from a small business. Next time I will just go to Navlett’s or Home Depot because I know if there is a problem with one of their plants I can exchange it for another one without an issue and minus the poor customer service attitude.

I love this place, not just because it’s right down the street from where I live, but because the service and plants are great! I go there often to get my plants re-​potted because I live in an apartment and I have no space. I usually pick up a plant or two when I do this because there are a lot to choose from. They mainly carry outdoor plants, but the succulents can grown indoor or outdoor. The pricing and service is much better than Orchard’s nursery down the boulevard. I highly recommend this place if you love plants and good service!

I hit up a lot of the surrounding nurseries to find plants and components for my succulent terrarium. This is a small nursery but the selection is nice and plants are very healthy. What really impressed me was the enthusiastic customer service. I didn’t get his name but it must be Matt that all these Unilocalers are raving about! I’m new to gardening and he gave practical advice and even recommended other nurseries for items they didn’t carry or out of. Without his advice, I may have ended up getting the wrong things. Reading all these Unilocal reviews, I guess I missed out on Harry’s House, gotta check it out next time I’m there.

Not only does Matt have great knowledge about everything at the nursery, he’s also friendly and super helpful too.
It’s always a pleasure to visit the garden, wander around and get great advice thrown in. Harry’s House — the cute store at the back of the garden is full of creative shabby chic wares that you just ‘need’. Run by the Farmyard Darlings, there’s often something fun and new to check out.
Garth was kind enough to donate a fruit tree to our elementary school’s Thanksgiving Feast last year.
I will always pick a visit here over any other local nursery.

I have been coming to this nursery since it was the old «Harry’s Nursery». Several years ago, when Garth and Marsha took over, they used their artistic flair to make the place more charming and inviting. I like to pop in whenever I can, to see what’s new. I love supporting a small, local family– owned business, because I can see how much loving care and attention they have given to it. Garth will go the extra mile for you and Matt is such a doll, always greets you with a smile and very helpful. Their prices usually beat the big nursery down the road.
If you are looking for local-​made products like honey (I heard that a tablespoon of local honey a day can help with the allergies) they carry it in the «Little Darlings» shop in the back. The shop’s also well-​presented and fun to peruse.

What is not to love about this nursery? Garth and Matt go out of their way to hep you. If they don’t have what you want they will order it for you. Matt is the most enthusiastic person I have ever met when it comes to plants. He always comes up with great suggestions for my garden as well as choosing the perfect gifts for friends. Mt. Diablo nursery has interesting and unusual plants and garden art as well as a charming gift store in the back. This is NOT a cookie cutter store. It’s independently owned, they give wonderful personal service, sell unique and high quality plants at fair prices and promote local artists (check out their garden gates!) If you want a fantastic one of a kind, truly artistic fountain, Rich is your man. Check out the pond in the nursery and the brick fountain in back of Harry’s house. They will give you his business card-​he transformed my garden!

Well, I will have to admit that they have very nice plants and an interesting selection BUT the service left alot to be desired. I felt as if I were bothering them. Yes, it was late in the day but who doesn’t want business when it walks through the door? I sent my mother down the next day and she experienced the same thing. When she asked for a receipt, the «gentleman» behind the register reached into the trash and threw a wrinkled up receipt onto the counter… REALLY? Only found the place due to their promo on Groupon but would probably never go back.

Heard about this nursery from a friend of mine, read the Unilocal reviews and then headed over. To make a long story short, I was charmed by the place-​very laid back, with healthy and special plants. I like that it’s small, as it makes it easier to focus. They also have a very darling gift store in the back. I left without buying anything, yet intrigued with many of the things I had seen.
Called them a couple of hours later to inquire about a lovely fig tree I had seen, and talked to that cute squirrel, Matt. He was there to help me when I got there, and made some good recommendations. He’s a pip, as well as a squirrel! (-; I also picked up a great gift in that back shop, and ordered some more like it. The woman couldn’t have been more helpful and engaging.
My Husband was very happy with his tree. Yay!

Garth, the owner, is super friendly and ready to answer any of your questions. My office is nearby, so I stop in often to see «what’s new» and sometime chat with Garth.
I love patronizing small businesses and Mt. Diablo Nursery is one that you will want to visit if you haven’t already.
They have great variety and if there’s something in particular you want that they don’t have, don’t hesitate to ask and they’ll order it for you.
If you are new to gardening, remember that even some perennials will die back during the Winter if our temps dropped below freezing. Always ask first otherwise you may be a little disappointed as I was with the beautiful Parrot’s Beak.

For a small place, a gem. We found a bunch of 50% off fruit trees and the guy who helped us also let my toddler eat the tomatoes off his plants and then some strawberries he had for himself. He then delivered my new trees and gave me some great advice. I will definitely go back.
…Although it is a little close to the traffic on the main street…

I dropped by this nursery for the first time last week, but not for the last. Considering its small footprint, it packs quite a wallop: I was impressed with the variety of stock, from six-​packs of strawberry plants to full-​on trees. Everything looked healthy and well-​tended, and the vibe was positive.
In addition to greenery, this nursery also carries E.B. Stone organic amendments and fertilizers, as well as FoxFarm brand pre-​bagged soil – all good stuff for the serious gardener. They also have gift-​type household and garden items.
This is a great little local biz, well stocked and well run. Check it out! Your garden will thank you.

I’m still fairly new to the gardening world, but have enjoyed the two trips I’ve made to Mt. Diablo Nursery. It’s on the smaller side, but I agree with another reviewer that it keeps you from getting overwhelmed.
Both of the owners are extremely knowledgeable, and helped steer me in the right direction. With their help, I discovered my new favorite accent plant– coleus. I’ve seen it since at other nurseries, but Mt. Diablo had the best selection with beautiful foliage, varying in color.
Last Sunday proved to be too early for some of the plants I needed, so I’ll be back next week!

Bringing a flat of beautiful flowers home and planting them is very cathartic. When you head over to Mt. Diablo Nursery you’re greeted with explosions of color, and meandering paths to enjoy the beauty. The space is small, which I like. Unlike Navlet’s, or any of the larger nurseries, you’re not overwhelmed by trying to find your best options. Here, you can quickly identify what’s right for you in a snap because it’s smaller scale.
Don’t miss the adorable cottage in the back of the lot — this is where all the little home & garden decorating goodies are located. They have some really neat offerings, and nice gift ideas.
The owner is welcoming, friendly & helpful.
Honestly, if I could just pitch a tent here and call it my back yard, I think I’d do it. Although breakfast could be a problem until the tomatoes start producing.
