Futures Explored provides training in both work-related and life skills to adults with mild to moderate developmental disabilities. Participants may need help in areas of personal or social skills, or in seeking and holding a job, or both. Their Supported Employment program places individuals in jobs in the community based on their skills and job readiness. Futures Explored also sponsors the Joey Travolta Summer film camp of which my Son has participated for the last 3 Summers on the Campus of St. Mary’s College in Moraga. Joey’s efforts are designed to address social cognitive communication and interpersonal skills of individuals diagnosed with high functioning autism or Asperger’s Syndrome. Campers learn the process of making a short film under the direction of Joey and his professional teaching and film crew. Over those 3 years, my Son as been a writer, actor, and scene guy, and has learned many valuable personal and film making skills. He won’t admit it afterwards, but in all those Camps, he’s had the time of his life.
