Specialties
A dual-specialty practice in Orthodontics & Pediatric Dentistry, dedicated to improving children’s dental health. For your peace of mind, both doctors have gone a step beyond most specialists in their field. Dr. Whitcomb is a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry and Dr. Surillo is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics. This voluntary effort in continuing education is unique in that it applies earlier classroom work and conventional continuing education to the real world of patient care, culminating in presentation of treatment results for critical review by a panel of nationally respected peers. The significance of board certification, however, goes far beyond achieving the approval of a small panel of experts. The greatest benefit comes from the in-depth self-evaluation that is required by years of preparation and continued maintenance of board certification, spanning a career’s quest for excellence
History
Established in 1945.
Established in 1945.
Yes, 1945, our office has been around for a long time. It was first established by Dr. Ron Jones, a well known pediatric dentist back then. Dr. Ken Whitcomb joined him in 1966 and is still around with us today. I (Dr. Surillo) joined Ken in 1996, soon after his own son (Dr. Steve) passed away, much too soon. Ken and I have had the greatest blessing of being a part of this San Diego community for a long time. We have seen most of our patients grow up and bring their own families and children to us for their dental and orthodontic needs. Often parents come in with their chlidren and end up getting braces and/or Invisalign for themselves. It is our utmost pleasure having the opportunity to treat families for generations.

Dr. Surillo is a graduate of UCLA School of Dentistry’s specialty training program, where he completed an additional three years of postdoctoral study. He received both of his specialty certificates in Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics as well as a Master of Science (M.S.) degree. This specialty training at UCLA is the only postdoctoral program that offers dual training in both specialties and provides a unique opportunity for the diagnosis and treatment of dentofacial imbalances that may arise in children during their growth and development.
He is also past president for the San Diego Society of Orthodontist, is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics, and is Chair of the SD Chapter of Smiles Change Lives.
Dr. Surillo was born and raised in Puerto Rico and is married to his wonderful love, Rosewood, a San Diego native. They have two boys and in his leisure time he not only enjoys fishing with his sons but also bicycling, camping, cooking, movies and a good book.
