This review goes out specifically to the gentlemen working in the ski/​snowboard rental department this past weekend.
I came here last Friday with my boyfriend (1÷15÷16) to rent a snowboard because we were going to Big Bear for the weekend. We got to Sports Authority around 6:15pm and there were already a bunch of people in line (I should’ve known; holiday weekend).
ANYway, there was only one guy working, I forgot his name but he has a beard and long hair. He was overwhelmed with all the people, and his manager should have definitely scheduled another coworker to help him out on a Friday before a holiday weekend, but he handled it like a CHAMP!
He was extremely friendly and skilled at his job. He knew exactly what board to get people just by glancing at them. I have never been snowboarding before so I had no idea what I needed as far as size. He ended up giving me a board that worked PERFECTLY all weekend. He was also very funny and sociable while I was waiting in line, so it made the line seem not so bad due to the good conversation.
One of his coworkers ended up giving him a hand once it got to be around 7pm (when they close) which I thought was very nice of him, because I don’t think he was scheduled to work at the time. He was also super chill to me and handled my paperwork while the original guy got my board ready.
Then on Monday I got stuck in traffic on my way home so I was gonna be a little late returning the gear. I called the store to notify them, and it was the same bearded guy on the phone. He told me it’s all good, and not a problem. Such a relief! When I finally got to the store on Monday night, a different gentleman helped me out and he was also very friendly and asked about how my trip went.
I have never been to this store before this weekend, but I will DEFINITELY come here again for all my ski/​snowboarding needs (I’m officially hooked after this weekend at Bear). I know it’s cliché to say this, but it really is hard to find good ol’ fashioned customer service these days, but that’s exactly what I got from the guys in the snowboard rental dept.

Ethan in the ski rental was a great help to our family when renting some boards for our boys. Two other cats helped in that department too, but I can’t remember their names. Made everything real easy on us & we will rent from them again. Thanks Ethan.

I have been a sports authority customer for many years but have come to realize that they seem to be moving in a direction with regards to poor customer service that will create their own demise.
My most recent visit to their Grossmont Plaza store exemplifies my sentiments.
I purchased a jacket at a Sports Authority in Carlsbad on a Friday. Sunday I decided to return it to the store closest to me (Grossmont) all tags still on although I had left my receipt at home. The young lady at the check out counter acted perturbed to be dealing with a return, even more so when I told her that I had left my receipt at home. Her first reply was to say that she could only give me a store credit. I asked if she could look me up my purchase by my credit card as almost every modern Point of Sale system can do. She said no, then asked me to step out of line so she could attend buying customers!
After waiting for her to finish with all others in line, I asked for the store manager. The young unhelpful lady called the store manager (David Tryjillo) on her earpiece to which he indicated that he was busy upstairs in his office doing something other on his computer! When pressed by me through her for greater assistance the manager asked the young lady to find out if I had Sports Authority membership with the idea that he might look the purchase up through my membership number. I said I did but they then denied their ability to help me when they discovered I purchased the jacket from different location! WHAT? The young unhelpful lady then gave me an 800 number to call to see if I could do a return through corporate!
It’s been a long time since I’ve experienced this level of horrific customer service and it’s easy to see that in this store at least, it begins from the top and throughout. David Tryjillo should never be allowed this level of responsibility in the customer service industry, nor represent what used to be a fine brand business!
Avoid this store if you can!

I used to shop here pretty frequently because I have a Chuze gym membership and they’re right across the parking lot. They usually have pretty good deals on their clearance stuff. The associates are great and readily greet you when you’re walking around, but the managers could use a little bit more training, which is why I gave them two stars and not one.
Recently came here because my husband received a $ 15 off coupon and he needed some shoes. He found some shoes he liked, but found that another store was selling them at a lower price. The manager on duty was willing to price match if he could show proof, which he did. Then he changed his mind and said he would have to call the store to verify that they had his size in stock in order to price match. Even if they did, they wouldn’t be able to honor his coupon. I decided that I would rather spend our money elsewhere and no pair of shoes is worth all of the time I wasted in that store.

I’ll never forget going into sports authority as a kid and playing in the basketball hoop area or the putting area (golf), good ol days. So now as an adult everytime I’ve been into this Sports authority, which has been alot in the last 2 months, everyone has always been so nice. Tonight even more so. One of the managers working, Brian I believe his name was. was super nice snd funny. Other than the fact he was a bronco fan (BOO) he made my night a bit more lively at 8pm. He joked with me and wasn’t a robot like some of these store associates are now a days. He’s definitely got the right attitude to be in customer service. I can almost say I can’t wait until I need to go back in. Thanks Brian for all of your help other than you being a bronco fan you’re a great salesman! :)

Horrible service rude and never want to help any customer rude place don’t come to this place they must not pay employees enough

Was searching for a Sports Authority near me and I’m glad I chose to go to this location!
Right when I walked in, I was a bit overwhelmed by the vast selection of products they had and the two levels, but I was greeted by a worker and directed right where I needed to go!
One of their store managers, Steve, did a great job in helping me pick out the perfect pair of rollerblades that I needed and clearly explained all the options that best fit my needs. He was also patient enough to explain to me which blades were on clearance or had the best deals!
On top of that, I had hiking shoes that were in need of exchange and although I was not able to exchange them at another location, Steve was helpful enough to assist me with that as well!
Great location, great service, definitely coming back here again!

O stars for customer service.
There wasn’t anyone in any of their shoe departments to help me locate children’s baseball cleats. I asked an employee who was just standing behind the front entrance counter (next to a cashier) to please send someone over to help us. He seemed annoyed and as if I was bothering him.
He replied that he would get someone over as soon as he could. By his attire, He looked as if he was the store manager (blue vest)
He just went back to what he apparently does best! Greeting people entering the store instead of helping us.
No one ever showed up to help me and my son. We left and went to big 5 where I not only had someone help us but I even bought more items for my sons little league team. Sports authority lost out on $ 427.31 They also lost me as a loyal customer…

I’ve gone here quite a few times, and I’ve never really cared for it. Hardly any selection, not kept very clean. I went today because I had a coupon, and my new job requires me to wear black Nike specifically. It’s always really hard to find someone to help you, and when you do, they either don’t really know anything or they seem not to care at all. However, there are probably three employees I’ve met there who seem to know something and appear to at least want to help.
Anyways, I chose to write a review today because something disturbing (to me) happened while I was waiting in line to purchase my black Nike shirts. There was a man and his son buying something just ahead of me. I have no idea what they were talking about, but my attention was caught when I heard the lady at the register (Andrea, blonde frizzy hair) mention something about «A Boy Named Sue.» Then the man checking out said, «oh I thought you were gona say Bruce Jenner.» Then Andrea the register lady waved her hands around shaking and said very loudly, «uuuughghg disgusting, he sends shivers down my spine!» Then they laughed together. Now, I think it’s ok to feel however you want about whatever you want, but when you are working for and representing an establishment anywhere, these are VERY INAPPROPRIATE comments to make, especially aloud in front of customers. I’m super disappointed that they have people like that working there, but I’m not surprised. I think I’m going to get ahold of the manager or whoever’s in charge, but I doubt anything would happen. I don’t think really any of these employees care much about their store or how it’s represented.

First time shopping here was a couple of weeks ago. I loved it! I was able to get so much stuff for a really good price. I won’t be shopping at Dicks anymore. They have a lot of clearance so you will get good deals on shoes, clothes and equipment. The only reason I gave it 4 stars was because I was forced to overhear an inappropriate conversation between two employees. They saw me and continued to talk about something super personal.

Poor customer service and a terrible selection of just about everything. The employees seem as though providing customer service is an inconvenience. This has occurred on more than one occasion.
Performance is usually a reflection of leadership, or a lack thereof.

I came here to get some workout clothes. I had to walk the perimeter of the store before I found someone, and he was at the register so he called someone back to unlock the fitting room door.
This was the worst fitting room ever.
It’s under the escalator, so it shakes and shudders. It is sealed off from all natural light when you shut the door. I don’t think there’s an air vent into the room so I naturally became afraid that I’d be locked in here (yeah, I’m claustrophobic).
I gave up and left.
This is where we come sometimes to get sporting goods we cannot get at Big 5 for whatever reason. It’s conveniently located at Grossmont Center.

It was… ok…and I probably won’t go back. There was one gentleman who was super nice and helpful (can’t remember his name I just know he was super tall like 6’6 or something) anyways they are way over priced. I paid $ 80-​$ 90 for a glove and literally found the exact same glove at Walmart for $ 30. The pants I bought were $ 15 more then smaller mom and pop sports shops and the cleat selection sucked, which I’m glad I didn’t but any from here when I found some else where that are much better brand and had my color and size.
So far the only thing I liked are the socks.

I went to the La Mesa store for a pair of mini binoculars. The sporting goods are on the second level. On 08 – 28 –14 Thursday I was helped by a very knowledgeable sales agent named John.
He had actually walked up to me and asked if I needed help. A very personable sales agent. We discussed binoculars and he showed me a couple of pairs but I was unable to make up my mind.
We had some small talk about other things and he thanked me for coming in a wished me a great weekend. If I were to rate my experience on John alone it would be a 5+ stars but the next day changed all that. 08−29−14 Friday I arrived at the store at about 1040am. I had decided to purchase a pair of binoculars that I looked at the day before.
I went upstairs and no kidding there was not one sales person on the second floor, not one! I walked around through all the departments for no less then 15 minutes looking for a sales agent. Other customers were doing the same. This is a very large area with no help what so ever.
I finally had to go down stairs to customer service and ask for help. I then went back upstairs to the binocular display case and waited 4 or 5 minutes. I then saw a sales agent coming up the escalator and heped me.
It was obvious he didn’t work in this department and fumbled with a full ring of keys looking for the correct key to open the case.
I decided on the pair I wanted and he walked to two different storage areas at the back of the store trying to find the stocked merchandise. He then returned and I had to go downstairs to purchase them at one of several customer service checkouts. Only one person working ringing up merchandise. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
Later I came across a 10 dollar off coupon if you spend more then 50 dollars, this was never offered at check out, their to busy trying to sign customers up for BS programs… I guess I could of returned the item and re-​puchased it with the discount, but I didn’t feel like driving back… I’m never shopping here again, and word of mouth travels far!!!
This store is grossly understaffed on a Friday! Not to mention a long upcoming holiday weekend.
Management has failed severely at this location. I’m sure the main office would not be happy with this situation…
Here’s a couple other observations, the store is very rundown and filthy. The up escalator rubber hand rail was so filthy and smudged with greasy hand prints I refused to touch the handrail on both sides, there was not one inch of clean space. Absolutely gross! The entire handrail was this way, this being the full length of the handrail. It was this way the day before when I went to the store. It’s apparent the custodial staff is not cleaning anything, I would venture to say there is no custodian at this location. This entire escalator needs cleaning, the metal moving steps were equally as bad as the handrails with embedded dirt and debris .the stainless steel sides were just as gross with old tape and glue etc… gosh I’m sure glad I didn’t have to use the public restrooms, I could only imagine the health hazard in that area…
This store deserves a one star rating with the exception of sales agent John who helped me the first day. I never saw John the second day, but he truly deserves a (5) star rating for customer service!
Take bacterial wipes for your hands if you ride the escalator… I believe they have a elevator but I guess you would need to ride that at your own risk as well.
This store used to be a old Buffums (sp) clothing department store back in the 70’s and 80’s and I’m very sure the escalator is original equipment… those nasty hand prints might be from the 70’s, there were enough of them!!!
THAT’S IT !!

Wow what a horrible experience. Trying to find my son shoes, no one was willing to help, but more than that asking for help was like putting them out. We couldn’t find anything, because the rude staff would not even look in the back. I had to get one thing, In hindsight I should have put it back and left because when I went to check out there was an employee standing at the register and refused to help me and said oh you can go to another register, while standing and doing absolutely nothing. Makes sense now that he’s more than happy with his 300lbs and working in a sports store has given him no motivation. Awesome. Off to Dicks we go.

I’m going to be honest. I can’t really tell the difference between Sport Chalet or Sports Authority, but I like Sports Authority because it is closer to me and has a cool check-​in offer! -$ 10 off any $ 50 purchase. Thanks Unilocal!I’ve also seen some -$ 20 off off $ 100 deals as well, which were 2 of the reasons I visited in the last few months.
The service was pretty good both times I came here. The first was to pick up a GPS running watch as a gift for a family member. The manager helped me use my coupon & get me the best deal. I’ll never forget! He paid so much attention to my needs and made sure I got the item on time and at the most affordable price (it was around the holidays so I forget the exact circumstances now).
The second time I came here was to look for some gear for a snow trip. I scored some NikePro hyperwarm tights (orig $ 50) for under $ 30! Sweeet. There was also a sale on snowboards and I saw some marked down from $ 300+ to only about $ 115. Total steal.
The staff here are really friendly, but I mostly only see them by the registers. I was in the snow gear section upstairs for about 25 minutes and couldn’t find any sales associate. Overall, this is a good store with an okay selection and some pretty good deals.
TIPS: If you’re looking for something specific, I’d call ahead and make sure they have it in stock. This store is located towards the Wal Mart & World Market end of Grossmont Center.

I pretty much only come here for workout clothes. The selection is greater and cuter than Big 5, but a little bit more pricey than Target because of the brands.
If Nike Pro compression shorts make your butt look weird than try the Asics shorts. Less expensive, stretch material, neon colors, and doesn’t squeeze your thighs like the Nike Pros.
You need to get someone to unlock the dressing rooms, but there usually isn’t a problem finding someone to do this for me.
Sometimes you can find some gems in the clearance section too.
If you’re a big gym rat and you care about looking cute at the gym then you gotta behave here because you’ll end up spending a lot of money for only a few items.
Parking is a little hectic with Chuze, Macy’s, and Hooley’s surrounding the store but I just go during working hours.
Oh yes, and if you are a male and you wear compression leggings… chop your legs off bro. Not a good look.

Customer service sucks. Other than Francisco, who was very helpful, was probably the least paid of the employees I encountered snd was working harder than any of the others I encountered, including those with the word «manager» on their nametags.
Selection BITES.
Prices blow!
Returned all my purchases the next day after finding better options at better prices witj friendlier, helpful staff at Dicks.
In the future, I will go out of my way to shop any sporting goods store other than Sports Authority at Mission Valley.
