La Mesita Mexican Food

Decent place. The only reason why it was good was because the salsa bar. I got a sausage breakfast burrito and it looks and tastes like chopped up hot dogs. Go with the ham breakfast burrito instead.

I’ve been coming here for years and I’ve never had a bad experience. Their street tacos are awesome. *lengua, cabeza and adobada) are number one.

Wow! This place is incredible. Little shop. Unassuming and small. In fact inside looks pretty average. But the food! Every single salsa is great and I’m a salsa snob. Chips are made to order, and the surf and turf burrito is epic! I’m do glad I decided to come here. My mouth and stomach are singing in glorious union. The only thing that makes me sad is I’ll be done soon and the food will be gone lol. A++

This place is so amazing! Everything they make is delicious. Love their Carne Asada burritos and California Burritos. The taste of the meat is real carne asada. Trust me, I’m a Mexican food snob! Their salsa selection is good too. Their red salsa is really smokey and their green salsa is really refreshing. The retried beans are perfect and the flour tortillas are flaky, moist and floury. Truly awesome. The owner could be a little more smiley but I don’t really go there for smiles. This place is a neighborhood favorite.

This place is awesome. I come here almost every Sunday morning for a breakfast burrito and they’re perfect! When I’m not coming in for breakfast, I usually get the California burrito, which is also really good. The food is always made very well and in good time. The staff is also incredibly friendly, which is why I keep coming back!

Updating Review, as I recently visited La Mesita and had a great carne asada burrito.
The location is not very close to me, so when I am returning home from visiting my Mother
in La Mesa, I sometimes swing by.
The meat was lean, not greasy, I added cilantro — no pico pls, and asked for extra avo.
If you’re a fan of their hot sauces I can relate. Especially the lighter, thicker «oil-​based» hot
green sos. So for my friends out there that love this «GREEN STUFF!» — I have a little
recipe gift for you. It SUPER EASY to make. [I am not claiming this is the exact recipe, but it is
like it’s semi-​identical twin!]
Note: my recipe calls for cilantro, garlic, and a decent amount of fresh lime. I do not use nearly as much mayo or oil in my recipe as La Mesita does, so it really is mostly the beautiful emulsion of
fresh blended chilies :
Here it goes;
In a large pot: fill with water and throw in 3 jalapenos + 3 poblanos + 1 Anaheim chile
low boil for :30 min, stirring to rotate the chile peppers
Next: put on thin food prep gloves if you have them —
Over a strainer pour out the water, drain — cool rinse the chilies
Remove and use a pairing knife to cut in a circle around stem + cut long ways in half
Remove seeds
The peppers should be soft, not mush btw… next;
In a Blender: put in all peppers + ½ C Olive Oil [or other] + squeeze of 2 limes + one bunch
cilantro –semi chopped + ¼ C water + 3 garlic cloves that have been lightly
/​half cooked, salt — [salt but don’t go crazy]
Hit the pulse blend a few times… all should be moving and grooving nicely–
Now: hit «whip» or «blend»…and let her rip!
When everything is nicely blended, [and brace yourself] taste it — it will BLOW YOUR MIND!
Final Step: pour the blended Lime Chile Sauce into a very large bowl
Add: 1 C. Mayo
Using a whisk, gently incorporate all — Now this is the crème d’ la hot crème! Enjoy!

The food is pretty good, very quick and the staff fairly friendly on most days. Don’t judge a book by its cover, the location next to a 7 – 11 threw me off but the food is definitely worth coming back again and again. They seem to always use fresh ingredients.

By far my favorite Mexican food in La Mesa… never disappointed in the food or service. Some of my favorites… Camerones Ranchos-​the shrimp are a nice size and cleaned very good. The sauce is so good full of flavor. cilantro and lime in a tomato sauce. Mini tacos just the Bomb! Check it out you will not be disappointed.

Breakfast in off the chain. If you ever in this area I suggest this 10 xs out of ten. Super good everything on the menu is super good!!!

My family lives near by and we have eaten here often. We always get our kids burrito with just meat and cheese. We always repeat ourselves because this seems to be a difficult order.
Our order came and the kids burritos had everything on them. We brought the food back and they just said «Oh» they then proceeded to ring us up for new burritos. We were so furious we just left.
We will never return!

La Mesita is the best taco shop in town. All the food I’ve had at this place is delicious. I recommend this place for anyone that’s in for Mexican. I asked to use the restroom and they were nice to let me in.

That’s a piece of mind for me. Great job La Mesita management! I’ll continue to stop by this place.

The first time we tried La Mesita the carne asada fries were delish! The fries were crispy and golden and the carne was hot which are qualities that are few and far between with carne asada fries. The guacamole has absolutely no taste.
The second time we stopped in was not so good. The fries were limp, undercooked, flavorless, pale and sad! The carne asada was not very warm and again the guacamole tasted like nothing.
It’s inconsistent. If our first experience had been like our second, there wouldn’t have been a second. There likely will not be a third.

I love potato tacos and came across this place when I saw a sign 99cents potato or ground beef tacos. I’ll give it a try. I ordered 2 to go.
OMG! The best potato tacos I ever had ! Light crispy shell with a good amount of potato, cheese, lettuce and tomato. Very flavorful and so good! They have a wide variety menu so next time I’ll try more items. They also have party trays at reasonable prices.
This place is located in a strip mall next to 7 – 11. A must try! No drive in ordering, but the restaurant is very clean inside.

Did not know this gem has be down the street from me and my boyfriend’s for the longest time. We always go here for a Mexican food fix since it’s so close by.
I’ve tried the adobada tacos and its bomb! The meat is very flavorful. Add the serano chili sauce on top (looks like avocado color in their sauce bins). You think it doesn’t look spicy just because it’s green, oh I kid you not. And I just discovered the salsa cacera, maybe all the other times it was empty. But woooo that will make you sweat. I spiciness to the point I’ll burn my tongue.
The surf and turf burrito is pretty solid. I’ve tried the Cali burrito, tastes like the standard. Adobada burrito is good. Came for breakfast and grabbed the bacon, egg, cheese, beans and potato burrito was good. Wished there were more egg and bacon though. Also had the same but without bacon it was with steak. Steak tastes slightly better.
Boyfriend always get lengua tacos or burrito every single time. So I’m sure those are quite tasty. He tries other items but always comes back to the lengua.
Will definitely come here again for the adobada tacos. They always hit the spot when I don’t feel like driving so far to Chula for tacos.

I have yet to order anything that failed to be tasty! Pollo asada plate. Adobada torta. Albondigas soup. And of course the street tacos. TRY. THIS. PLACE. You might just enjoy it! CHEERS

The minis tacos are my favorite. Worth gettin excited over. It’s the best with the serrano cream sauce. I’m from San Antonio, TX which has great taco places as well. But three mini tacos for about $ 5? Yes please. Especially when they’re this good! Did I mention be sure to have the spicy cream sauce? :)

The restaurant was empty at noon on a payday Friday so that is a bad omen. The TV was loudly blaring a shoot-​em-​up movie and the guy could not hear my order very well. The meatballs in the albondigas soup were bland and expensive at 8 bucks which is bad but there were five and they were not greasy which is good. I added water to the soup so it was less salty. I may try something else if I ever go back.

This taco shop is a solid 3.5. Each time, it has delivered a burrito that tames your hunger, & gives your taste buds something to sing about. It’s in a little strip mall that is easily passed by on the way to & fro 70^th street. But well worth the extra U –Turn or sharp right you will have to take to get in here. Both the Cali & Carne Burros have been outstanding. The salsa bar is well equipped & maintained. They have this creamy Chipoltle — type sauce you won’t want to miss. La Mesita Mexican, I salud you!

How surprised I was, to find a really great Mexican place so close to where I live. This place doesn’t really have many reviews and didn’t seem too busy, I have no idea why. This is really a hidden gem of a Mexican joint.
When walking into this place, it has a small seating here and a small little salsa bar to the left of the register (
) They offer two sauces and three salsa mixes. Unfortunately I only cared for one of the salsas (
), but its by far some of the best salsa I’ve gotten from a taco shop joint in a long time. It tastes fresh and has a major spicy kick to it. The sauces were a big let down unfortunately, too salty.
I ordered my usual, a California burrito (
) which was definitely on the bigger side of burritos for taco joints. Inside the California (
) they put asada, cheese, salsa, guac and fries. Their carne asada here is not just good, its GREAT. Perhaps some of the tasty well seasoned carne asada I’ve had. The fries were crispy and their guac was good. This place is definitely a winner in the California burrito department for me.
The three rolled tacos with beef (
) that I ordered were also very delicious here. As you can see, they don’t skimp on the toppings. The cheese and guac they use here is absolutely amazingly good. These tacos weren’t big, but they packed tons of flavor to them. The shells were crispy, not soggy (even after the drive home), and the shredded beef they used inside had lots of flavor. The fresh chunks of tomato on top were also great, I love when taco shops do this.
La Mesita is a winner for me. Like other reviewers have said, this place makes an killer good California burrito. Their food is all fresh and their cooks prepare everything perfect. Its great to see little places like this do SD Mexican food so good in a sea of mediocre taco shops in San Diego. Living so close to La Mesita, I will definitely be returning for that California. Waking up with a slight hang over, due to some average wine I drank the night before, I stopped in here for a bowl of red menudo. The menudo came in an average size bowl with a side of the traditional condiments and four piping hot corn tortilla (
). Four I tell you!
After adding all the condiments to the soup, including the all the juice of a wedge of lime, I dug in (
). The menudo was good and had a good amount of stomach and a average amount of hominy (
). I definitely believed that it needed more hominy, but in retrospect, the soup as a whole tasted good. The stomach was tender with a few chewy pieces, that were better just swallowed, rather then chewed. The heat level of the soup was very mild, even with the added chopped Serrano peppers, but the flavor of the soup had that good red chili flavor.
I was please that they gave me four corn tortillas because most places only give two or three. They were perfect for dipping in the soup (
). The girl at the counter was nice and in good spirits for an early Sunday morning.
