History

Established in 2011.

I am a licensed Naturopathic Doctor in the state of California and also a member of American Association of Naturopathic Physicians and California Naturopathic Doctors Association. In addition to Primary Care, my focuses include Baby Boomer Health and Gastrointestinal Disorders. I work with San Diego Chiropractic, a complimentary and alternative clinic with chiropractic, naturopathic, acupuncture and massage services available.

I received my Bachelor’s of Science from Western Michigan University where I was also fortunate to be involved in research relating neurotrophic factors to blood pressure regulation. My research experience fueled my hunger for solutions. I earned my Doctorate from National College of Natural Medicine. The skills that I learned to diagnose and treat individuals were the answers I had been craving for. I truly had found the solutions for real healing. While working on my medical degree, I was also active in research projects both at Helfgott Research Institute and Oregon Health Sciences University. Research included Echinacea, heart rate variability, UNDAs and model development for multiple sclerosis. I believe both clinical and basic science research is instrumental in providing adequate health care for individuals. As a result, I keep up to date on new treatments and diagnostic protocol developments in research so I can provide the best care possible.

I had a very negative experience with Dr. Fowl and her staff.
I had scheduled a free 10 minute phone session with her at a clinic on Adams Avenue where she works. Our conversation was somewhat helpful, but she seemed reluctant to really tell me much about how she worked. After we spoke, she told me that a clinic staff person would call me back to schedule a one hour intake appointment.
No one called me back.
After an hour, I called the clinic back and was given a 5PM appointment that day by Breanna, the office manager. This was challenging for me, as I had to rearrange my schedule to be able to make it, but rearrange my schedule I did.
Later that day, Breanna called me and said that Dr. Fowl would not see me for my appointment because we had the phone session this morning. She wouldn’t explain why this was Dr. Fowl’s policy.
I was confused because I had told Breanna I had the phone session with Dr. Fowl when Breanna offered me the 5PM appointment. When did this alleged «policy» take effect? Why wasn’t Breanna aware of this?
What unprofessionalism!
I asked to speak with Dr. Fowl. Breanna told me that she wasn’t available. I asked to leave a message. Breanna told me that she wouldn’t return my call.
Brian suggested that I call Dr. Fowl at her private practice in La Mesa, which I did, for an appointment the next day.
I left a message for Dr. Fowl with her answering service.
I never heard back from Dr. Fowl or anyone on her staff.
I have since found a wonderful Naturopathic doctor who is professional, kind, helpful and has a terrific, capable office staff… something Dr. Fowl obviously does not.

Came in to see Dr. Colgen per a neurologist referral. This place actually has the light switch thing in the lobby to alert the doctor of your arrival. The doctor came out to greet me and gave me a business handshake. I was thinking hey I am here because I am in pain and this lady is trying to break my hand. I was walked to her office in the back where I took notice to the furniture. Two reclining chairs, a nice couch sitting adjacent to its matching sturdy chair. I was there for an hour and a half. All of my time was used up by paperwork. The doctor seems nice enough. We’ll see if she can help with pain management. Stay tuned until next appointment to see if the stars change from the current 4 I have given. Good or bad :-D

I first came to Dr. Fowl at Journey of Health Medical Clinic in sheer desperation, after traditional medical doctors a were unable to help me. I’d been suffering from unexplained sudden and severe allergic-​type reactions that were landing me in the emergency room repeatedly for 7 months straight, as well as on other sporadic occasions over my lifetime. Allergy testing had not been able to find the cause, and antihistamines did not suppress the reactions, some of which were life-​threatening reactions involving throat and mouth swelling.
My allergist had told me, «medical science doesn’t know what causes this, and in some people it just eventually goes away on it’s own». In the meantime my work and family life was being disrupted, and my health and bank account decimated.
When I described my symptoms to Dr. Shannyn Fowl, she didn’t appear to be the least bit mystified. She was familiar with problems like mine– apparently HER branch of medical science knows what causes it– and was able to solve my problem with a few simple dietary changes and relatively inexpensive vitamin supplements. This was not covered by my insurance, but it was much less expensive than the out-​of-​pocket fees I’d been paying for tests and treatments that had not been effective.
This was by far the best money I’ve ever spent towards health-​care, because Dr Shannyn actually found and treated the problem– not just the symptoms. Because the problem I was having was caused by a genetic issue, I am now taking my children to Dr. Shannyn.

I met Dr. Shannyn Fowl after taking my 6 year old son to 5 other doctors for his allergies and asthma. She was the first doctor who looked at the whole picture and was interested in fixing the problem, not just masking it with more pills and inhalers. After a couple months of diet changes and adding immune enhancing supplements to his diet, I was able to cut his medications in half. My son continues to get better each day and I am very thankful for Dr. Fowl as she is a very knowledgeable, caring and compassionate doctor.
