La Jolla Sports Club

My husband and I have been members of La Jolla Sports Club for many years. The new owners, Bretty Murphy, and his wife, have done great improvements to the gym, including a terrific filtered water machine. The water is so tasty! It’s especially delicious before and after a workout. La Jolla Sports Club is a place where I feel comfortable working out. It’s kept very clean and the staff is friendly and helpful. They have a ton of options available when it comes to my workout routine: cardio machines with TVs attached to them so we can watch whatever we want, weight machines, eucalyptus-​scented chilled towels, nice locker rooms and showers, circuit training, and even free training classes. My favorite is my morning stretch class with Connie, who is totally awesome! My other favorite trainer is Josh Liberty! He’s experienced, kind and extremely knowledgeable! Make sure you also get a facial or a massage by Camelia. She’s A+. This gym is a must and will NOT disappoint!

I’ve been a member for over 2 months now and this is hands down the best fitness club I’ve been a part of. Front desk staff is extremely friendly and already knows my name when I come in both morning and night, machines are all kept up, classes are AWESOME (I went to the H.I.T.T. class), I’m happy I made the switch.
Bram Wiley has been my trainer and we’ve had a few sessions. I’ve never had a personal trainer before who has taken the time to get to know my body/​workout routines/​eating habits the way that he does. I’m genuinely blown away by #1 His attitude/​approach to training, #2 His knowledge of the body and how it develops and #3 His ability to get creative with workouts and laying a blueprint for my long term goals. The guy has the memory of an elephant and I don’t feel like I’m just «another client» of his, It’s refreshing and I wouldn’t be doing him justice if I didn’t bring this up and give him props.
Oh and the best part… THEY’RE EXPANDING. Looking forward to the future with this place, great job thus far.

I’ve already posted about this place in the past so I just wanted to update that the gym got new owners. Staff is mostly the same and still very friendly! The new owners really seem to know good business. I got the college deal which is about 200 bucks for the summer which was well worth it for me. No long term contract like the 24 hour or LA fitness for me.

Took the AGT class, loved it! Super fast paced and was a super intense workout. Love the facilities! Definitely state of the art and not to mention in a fantastic location!

The new owners have made a 100% improvement to the club. I have trained in some of the top Division 1 training facilities and this compares to the best. The staff is great, very friendly and helpful! And the part that sets this gym apart from the rest is the amazing locker room and shower set up.

Great club in terms of the facilities and even better in terms of the ownership. A quality facility run by quality people that is only going to get better with the new expansion.

The new owners are AMAZING. Brett and Kera are fantastic and very helpful. I work out often to quite often… and would not work out in any other environment than what they provide. I will be a member for life!

Great qualities-​awesome friendly staff, lots of classes, parking garage available for free, easy system to scan in, good location if you live in La Jolla area, good equipment, weights are always put back, filtered water in weight area, friendly environment, no meat heads, plenty of towels, soap etc. The staff I would give 5 stars, as a business owner myself I know it is not easy to run this type of establishment. This review could be five stars if some of these things could be improved:

If you’re in La Jolla village and charging 3 – 4 times the price of lets say a 24hr or other types of generic gyms that are much cheaper, you better keep the place top notch. Hardly any lockers available in the mens locker room as many of them seem always locked from people that are barely at the gym that rent them, dirty stained carpet in men’s locker room, black mildew in the showers, shower doors get stuck and can’t open easily, constant puddle from poor drainage that is a hazard for people in the showers common area, a steam room that is usually a mess with towels thrown and wet soggy paper all over and the plastic cover for the thermostat on the ground-(from people throwing cooled paper towels on the thermostat because the steam never comes out enough), a scurvy musty smell in the steam room, (when I first joined I literally said out loud upon walking in «oh man what the heck is that stench» no more eucalyptus on the towels, or spray seems to be available that used to help hamper this awful smell, no room to work out in the free weights area when it gets crowded. Perhaps a little cosmetic upgrades, paint and lighting etc, I mean this is La Jolla village, 10 million dollar plus homes down the block… I just would expect things a little more top notch is all. One more thing, there is a punching bag that if you want to use is usually not hanging, its a heavy bag so you have to get a stool to hang it and dig it out of the corner where stuff is usually piled up or it’s in the class room being used to drag around. I would put a designated bag that is always hung so people who want to use it can always access it.

I’ve been a member of the La Jolla Sports Club for 7 years and have been very satisfied for the most part. During the past year, however, there has been a definite decline in the cleanliness and appearance of the facilities. The equipment is no longer cleaned properly so that the white machines are now streaked with grease or dirt (not such which); the floor of one of the rooms is often marked with dirty shoe prints; clumps of dirt and dust are noticeable everywhere; several full-​length mirrors have huge cracks; and ceiling tiles are stained with water leaks from the faulty AC system. The staff continues to be very professional and effective, but they, too, must be discouraged to work in a gym that used to be in much better condition than it is now. I would have expected new ownership would make huge efforts to improve or at least maintain the quality of the La Jolla Sports Club.

Awesome new owners! The staff is friendly, helpful, and consistently welcoming. The gym has great variety in terms of quality equipment and space. The workout classes available are awesome — can’t wait to try the spinning class. Cleanliness is everything in a gym, and the Sports Club doesn’t disappoint.

They don’t seem to fix things easily. I have been complaining about the heat in the training area (the heat comes on instead of the a/​c) and it is crazy. I get light headed working out in there and it has been going on for over a month! Fix it. This is crazy. You are spending more money having your A/​C cranked the other end of the gym to compensate. Unless you are starting hot yoga it is ridiculous. Especially as this is the area you plan to put your spin studio. Hot spinning is a recipe for a disaster!!!

I’ve been going to this gym several times a week for almost four years. I didn’t realize it had new owners, but now it makes sense. Changes I’ve seen include: An extremely cluttered gym. While I understand you closed another facility and consolidated equipment here, none of it has been purged and the gym is overcrowded, messy and disorganized.
The «new» (because they’re used, not new) spin bikes are injuring people.
The studio where I attend most classes is brimming with equipment, shrinking the floor space by at least ¹⁄₃ or more for members.
Barbells for classes are old and peeling and never organized in a way that makes them easy to find a matching pair.
The new benches in the women’s locker room are too big for the space. And too many lockers are «locked» when it’s not an overly busy time at the gym.
Spin instructors routinely go over their allotted class time. That means the incoming class can’t set up until the floors are mopped.
I’ve seen (and experienced myself) the front desk staff being openly hostile to members. It’s shocking.
The changes I’m seeing are for the worse. Please get it together LJ Sports Club. I want to continue my membership, but we’re going on months of decline now and I know I’m not the only member who has a clock running on you. There are a lot of options in town. I hope you’ll address all of these concerns before I finally throw in the towel and find another gym.

Convent location in the village. Clean, professional and equipment is in great shape. Would defiantly recommend.

We live a block away and have enjoyed this facility for the past 6 years. Everything from classes to equipment to the locker rooms is very well maintained and the club itself has a ton of options to cater to every workout — from body pump and spinning, to circuit training.
Lately though it has been a life saver for our growing family. Their daycare center is outstanding! Not only do they have every conceivable toy for all age groups but the caretakers there are nothing short of amazing. My 16 month old loves to go there and play with toys and other kids (no need to schedule play dates, yayy!!) while I get to enjoy some me-​time.
I have been telling other fellow moms about this life changing option and hope that they continue to keep up their high standards.

Clean gym, reasonable prices, friendly staff. Usually empty after 5−6pm crowd leaves and you’ll find most of the equipment available which is great.
Locker rooms are nice. No pool, but the la Jolla cove is right next door if you’re looking for a swim.

Nice clean facilities in the heart of La Jolla. Run the beach and stop in for a workout. Awesome spin classes! Best workout I have had is with the instructor TAD he teaches Thurs and Fridays at 11:00am.
Also, Kevin Root has a challenging boot camp and is a trainer to the trainers. That’s my advice. If you live here or passing through this is the place to get your weekend workout!

Trevor at the front desk is always a helpful resource, without him the gym would be missing an integral part of its culture and what makes it thrive. He is always professional and courteous. The gym is not pretentious, and I never have to wait for a machine. The showers are clean and the steam room is a wonderful bonus. I have heard great things about the classes, and want to try a spin class soon. It’s also nice to that they have indoor parking.

Great place to work out in La Jolla. Been coming here for 2 years and the constantly buy new equipment. Not too crowded. Easy to get in and out!
