A Better Deal Tuxedo

It’s noon Prom day and much to the family tradition my BF son doesn’t have a tux!
Panic, Shock then Unilocal!I found this place, made a call and was greeted by a warm voice who reassured me we could get it all done today!
I really can’t say enough about Gerry the owner and Alexa who ultimately hooked us up and made Austin look like a GQ model! In less than an hour we had a complete tux, accessories and shoes in hand for less than $ 200!
Alexa was incredible! She was honest, helpful patient and made Austin feel totally comfortable
We will be coming here for all occasions! Id give them 10 stars if I could

I went in after setting up an appointment to try a couple of tuxes for a wedding that was planned for 2 months later. The lady (Janet?) who was helping me seemed a bit condescending and pushy, but I thought ok, they’re located in La Jolla so that’s the way it is here. I tried 2 jackets and after the second one, Janet was starting to look clearly irritated that I had «dared» to question her opinion that the jacket fitted oddly. She lectured me in length about how tuxes are to look compared to fitted suites and what I should expect. I said ok, let me try the pants. The pants looked horrible on me (clearly very short in-​seam) and when I politely asked if she had any others, she went off again about what I should expect. By now my wife and I were starting to feel unwelcome and uncomfortable. Then I asked about the timing of the return since we were going to an out of town wedding. After another lecture about the inner works of the rental business, she said that we HAD to return it within a very narrow range, that couldn’t work for us. I said «Thank you and I understand your constraints and that’s fine, it just doesn’t work for our time-​frame». I was polite and smiling the whole time but by then I was just fed up and didn’t want to have any business with these people. She relented a bit and started to say she can work with us and let’s see what she can do blah blah. I just wanted to leave. I said I’ll call her if I wanted to go ahead and I wanted to try a couple of other places. I left and never called back.
2 months later, close to the wedding, she calls my phone and says she has a package for me and I should go pick it up and pay!!! There was no transaction, signatures or anything!!! I just politely said there’s been a mix up and I have already got what I wanted from somewhere else. She said «OK, it’s fine, you said you wanted something and now don’t wanna pay, that’s fine» (paraphrasing)!!! Holly crap! That’s customer service?
Don’t go there. Terrible, God-​awful service, old damp dimly lit location and small collection of over-​sized, out-​dated low-​quality tuxes. I went to Friar’s tux shop (Savvi member) and had a great experience.

Extremely helpful and accommodating. Easy and quick pickup, but you can tell they are thorough in the back when they are altering the tuxes.

My husband and I made an appointment about four months before our wedding day, and picked out tuxedos for four groomsmen and himself. My husband tried on a few different styles and ended up selecting an outfit for himself and the groomsmen by the end of the appointment. At that time, we were told because we had five rentals, there was a special where we had a credit for an additional rental in the future. We ended up selecting another tuxedo for my husband for the reception since I also had an outfit change. The whole appointment took a little over an hour from start to finish.
About a month later, my father-​in-​law decided he wanted to rent a tux, so we went back in and picked out a style that would go with the color scheme, but not necessarily match the wedding party. Since he’s from out of state, he had to send in his measurements.
About 1 ½ weeks prior to the wedding, we learned that one of the groomsmen couldn’t make the trip out. I called the store to check on their cancellation policy; since we were past the window for no-​charge cancellation, there would be a $ 25 restocking fee. When I called back to cancel the tux rental, I was told that we would lose our free rental since the number of rentals dropped below the minimum required. Needless to say, there was a Bridezilla moment. In my mind, we still met our minimum of five rentals for a free rental since we added my father-​in-​law later on, but was now told it was six rentals for a free rental… The staff member spoke to the owner, and they «made an exception». I’m not sure where the confusion was, but I would confirm what the specials are before finalizing any details.
When picking up your rentals, be patient with the staff and be prepared to wait a bit. They are busy around the designated pick-​up time because customers start arriving to pick-​up and try on their rentals. It can get crowded since there are only two dressing rooms, and last minute adjustments need to be made. My husband and father-​in-​law picked up their rentals a little earlier that day, so for the three remaining groomsmen, it took about an hour.
Overall, a wonderful and happy experience with this shop. The staff was friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable on the variety of styles available.

Went in this afternoon to learn more about the offerings and to try on a few different tuxes and suits for our upcoming wedding. John was very helpful and easy to work with while the owners Janet and Jerry were incredibly rude and gave the impression they didn’t want us there.
After trying on a few tuxes with John, the owner walked up to me and told me «we have another appointment soon», which I replied «okay». It was incredibly rude and odd since we were the only people on the store, and they have two dressing rooms. I tried on one more tux and as I was changing back into my normal clothes I overheard the owner ask John if he «got rid of those people yet». When I came out John had to apologize as he clearly understood I heard the comment.
In short, the owners are jerks and despicable humans. Their customer service was atrocious and I can whole heartedly give a resounding 1 star review. I’d give it 0 stars if possible. I highly recommend going elsewhere. The establishment was in poor condition and looked like their cousin built it. Not recommended at all.

A great place for black tie wear! Joey and the staff were very helpful. I took my tux on the plane with me because the quality is so good at Better Deal. I have to say that I looked as good as an old guy can at the National Book Awards. They are my go to men’s shop!

We got my fiances tux here for our wedding and really loved our experience. We went to a few chains before and their rentals were ill fitted and cheap looking. At A Better Deal we got an amazing tux that was actually tailored to fit him even though it was a rental! He looked amazing and kept getting compliments. The check in and out process was quick and easy. «Magic Mike» helped us originally and put together a great look for him!

Every part of my experience here was poor. I went in and was fitted for my tuxedo and when I returned to pick it up, neither the pants nor the shirt fit. The pants were 2 or 3 inches too short and the shirt had to be a child’s medium. They weren’t short on bad attitude throughout the process, however. After a 2 hour visit to pick up the tuxedo, I left with a pretty decent fitting, mediocre looking tuxedo. They also only use handwritten forms on carbon paper to keep track of the tuxedo rentals. Literally. I made the mistake of volunteering to return the tuxedos for several people after the wedding. The drop off and intake was a very difficult process, because again, they don’t use computers. After watching 3 people try to prepare receipts for me, I headed on my way. My experience didn’t end there because I received 4 calls in the days that followed telling me that certain pieces of the tuxedos I dropped off had been missing. Of course, they weren’t and after they figured out how to read the 1976 triplicate forms, they realized that and called to let me know they had everything. Thanks for an irritating experience.

My husband rented a suit, shirt, tie and shoes for a job interview.
The staff was helpful, professional and attentive. I would echo what others have said here that the process takes time — he was fitted for the suit, tried on a few different items and then the suit needed to be altered. All of this was time well spent. He looked great and felt so confident going into his interview.
What a great resource to have on hand for formal events and these one off dress up affairs.

Kyle assisted me in sizing, and he illuminated hip styles and fashion trends of which I was only slightly aware. Their prices are kind of steep, but their service is exceptional.

Overall, I had a great experience with A Better Deal Tuxedo. It was nice to be able to use a local shop as opposed to a chain store.
The staff was very friendly and helpful. The quality of the product is good.
Just make sure that when you go in to try things on and have alterations done that you have a lot of time for the appointment. It’s a small shop and they seem to get a bit overwhelmed when large parties come in.
If you’re looking for a family run business this is a great place to use. I appreciate all of the hard work their staff put in to help with my wedding. A three-​star rating to me means that they were very good, just not above my expectations.

Janet is a absolutely a pleasure to work with. She had me in and out of there with Tux in hand in an hour. Nice lady with a nice dog. Fair prices and many selections to choose from. If you walk down the hill from her store there’s an amazing view of Bird Rock.

I was visiting San Diego and unexpectedly needed a tux four hours before a black tie event in LaJolla. I called and Jerry the owner answered saying, «you better get over here soon!» I did and quickly saw why. It was a busy late Saturday afternoon, and the little shop was filled with people getting fitted. Yet, the whole staff — Jerry, Janet, Magic Mike — worked hard to get me fitted and looking good in such short notice. The whole time I was there, I saw the staff treat me and each of the other customers like the many celebrities on the wall. The shop may look a bit old-​school, but I can’t say enough good things about the exceptional service and selection provided.

We had an excellent fitting appointment here.
Kyle and Janet were very attentive and very knowledgeable. Their regular tuxes rent for $ 185 or $ 195 for the new Navy Ike Behar, which is a little high. However, the Ike Behar tux that we were looking at fits extremely well and feels luxurious.
A lot of these tuxes are going around calling themselves «Slim-​fit» and Modern-​fit”, but it’s not true. My poor little fiancé was swimming in those tuxes. I told Janet and Kyle the type of fit that we were looking for and they nailed it.
They also carry slim tux shirts, that are really slim, and they do not charge extra for them. They also offered us $ 10 off per tux as a group discount.
They were also great at suggestions for suit and tie options.
Another thing to think about is how things are going to go once the tuxes come in. They will basically do emergency fittings to make sure that our out of town groomsmen have suits that fit properly.
They also took a picture of us, and gave it to us as a souvenir. Super cute.

This place was awesome and great prices! Me and my fiancé went in to try on suits for our upcoming wedding. We were helped by Kyle, he was great, very knowledgeable and had great suggestions about different suit and tie options. With great customer service and great prices this place has everything your looking for!

THE OWNER IS RUDE, UNAPPRECIATIVE, AND YOU MAY NOT GET THE SUIT YOU PAID FOR! NOT WORTH THE RISK! PLEASE READ WHOLE STORY.
On September 18^th, 2014 I rented three suits from A Better Deal Tuxedos and Suits for my wedding that was on 9÷20÷2014.
The suit I rented had a small bag of what appeared to be cocaine in the pants pocket. I found it as I was putting the rings in my pocket, approaching my wedding ceremony. I had only been wearing it for about an hour that morning and did not notice it until then. It was a very small bag, and see how it could have been overlooked. Before that, it was hanging in the plastic storage bag A Better Deal had provided. I suppose this could have been just funny to some, but I am in recovery. So to me, it was very upsetting.
On returning the suits, I went into the store and asked to speak with the manager or owner. The gentleman went in the back to get them. Shortly after, another female employee appeared and asked if she could help. I explained I was waiting for the manager, which I wasn’t sure if she was or not. Her questions went like this: «What’s the matter?» I explained. She said, «How do you know it wasn’t crystal meth?» «How much was there?» «Do you think I had been washed?» «What do you think it is worth?» I thought she would have seen that I was already upset by the look on my face and my curt answers. I finally just turned my back on her to wait for the manager.
After about 10 more minutes of waiting, the original employee came out and said they were unavailable. He said he would put my ticket on the side and have the owner call me the next day. I said please do, it is very important I speak with them. This was Sunday night.
On the 3^rd day of not hearing from them (Wednesday), I finally called in and asked for the owner, Jerry Klein, by name. When he answered, I asked if he knew about the incident and that I wanted to speak with him. He plainly stated that he received my request for contact but didn’t think I deserved a call back. I told him I felt I at least deserved and apology. He disagreed.
It is frustrating that he can take $ 500 of my money, but I am not worth a return phone call.
When I began to explain how upsetting this was, he began to argue the reasons why this could not have happened. I started to debate with him, explaining how it could have happened, but then stopped with the response, «There is no debate on whether it could or couldn’t happen. It DID happen». He would not accept this. He would not apologize.
He asked why didn’t I hold onto the cocaine and bring it with me when I returned the suit. I explained because it would be a felony if I had gotten caught with it. He said that someone at my house must have borrowed my suit and left the cocaine in the pocket. What?! This statement is ridiculous enough in itself. But if one knew my family and friends, they could see the shear absurdity.
This is only part of the failure on their part. The suit I rented for my wedding didn’t even fit. I had been fitted at their store, by their person, so there is no excuse. When I went in to pick it up, I pointed out to the person handling my order that the jacket was nowhere close to fitting. The sleeves were 4 inches too short. I did not know what happened to the one I tried on at the fitting.
The employee frantically went searching for another. He came back with what he called «the best he could do». Now what am I supposed to do? I am getting married in a day and a half. I have family flying in from all over the country. And my two best men have matching suits. As you can imagine, my head is spinning with a 100 other details I need to manage so I just take what he has for me. There was no time for me to go elsewhere to I just dealt with it.
I didn’t even look at the pants as the employee helping me grabbed me as I stepped out from behind the curtain, tugging at my clothes, ensuring me it looked good. It was a busy day there so everyone was frantic. They do not have mirrors in the dressing rooms so I never really got to view myself before leaving. But again, it was obvious my jacket sleeves where still too short.
When I put the suit on the morning of my wedding, I could clearly see the arms where too short and the pants where too long, but again, I’m on my way to be married and there was nothing I could do at that point.
Forget that I paid $ 504 for rentals and my suit didn’t even fit. I can even accept that the cocaine was overlooked. But I don’t think I have ever dealt with anyone as rude and self serving as this owner. He didn’t care one bit about my satisfaction as he already cleared my credit card and there was nothing I could do about it. Any other person would have at least offered me an apology rather than a fight. In short without exaggeration, my experience was horrible. And I was dealing directly with the owner, Jerry Klein. I wish there was a way to upload the photos

When my wife and I started planning our wedding, I of course, wanted her to have it exactly the way she wanted. I only had one non-​veto-​able term… the tux.
A Better Deal exceeded expectations.
The selection was modern. The prices were great. The fitting went perfectly, and the tuxes looked fantastic on the big day.
But… the reason I give 5 stars is the ownership and customer service.
The day a man gets fitted for the clothes he’ll be wearing at the alter is a big deal. They get that.
Couldn’t be happier with the whole process.

We went to this place to rent suits for my now husband, groomsmen, and dad. This was our second visit to this ABDT after having rented a suit for a friend’s wedding. We thought the first experience was good so we wanted to give them our business again.
BIG MISTAKE! The groom’s and groomsmen suits looked fine. No problems there and that’s why I gave them 2 stars. However, my dad’s suit was a mess! He’s a short man and his suit required alterations of which none took place. The pants were too long and the jacket made him look like a little boy wearing his father’s suit. This was completely unacceptable. He works 14-​hour days so by the time he realized no alterations had been made, it was too late. He wore it anyway and he was so uncomfortable the whole time.
That was strike one. Second strike was when we had to return the suits the very next day. It is not an easy place to get to in La Jolla but we rushed to get everything there before they closed. We were 2 minutes late and even though we called ahead of time to let them know we were on our way, the clerk was so rude to my husband when we got there! I understand people have to get home after work but I think when a customer is courteous and gives you a heads-​up about being late, you should treat them with respect and not make smart-​a$$ comments about them being late. Having to return everything the very next day after a big event like a wedding is a very big hassle.

After reading the other great reviews on Unilocal,we decided to try out A Better Deal Tux for our wedding menswear. The shop is located in Bird Rock, La Jolla and has been for decades as evidenced by the numerous photographs on the wall. It appears to be a family-​run business, something you don’t see a lot these days. Everyone we interacted with was great from the initial selection of the grey suits we chose to the final fittings. We had no issues throughout the entire process and since we had 5 groomsmen renting, plus the groom, we got a discount which could be shared across all of the guys. Overall a good experience — one of the easier aspects of planning our wedding!
