As Registered Landscape Architects, The Penland Studio provides design, illustrative drawings, construction drawings, specifications, cost estimates and construction administration for all elements outside of a given structure.

We provide services for residential, commercial, institutional and public clients. Each project is custom crafted to the needs and budgets of our clients and may include design of hardscapes (plazas, terraces, patios, driveways, walks, etc.), walls, water features, planting, irrigation, outdoor lighting or combinations of outdoor elements.

For residential clients, we often provide Master Plans to serve as an organizing element for properties and to allow for project phasing and budgeting.

History

Established in 2005.

After receiving a Bachelors of Landscape Architecture degree and being employed at several multidisciplinary firms for over twelve years, Ben J. Pethel, PLA, ASLA sought to find an outlet to provide design services for the residential market as well as for the commercial and institutional markets to which larger firms practice.

In January of 2005, he created The Penland Studio in Knoxville, Tennessee to allow for design of projects on small scales as well as large with a goal of providing great service and design to all clients.

Business Owner

Ben Pethel graduated from the University of Georgia with a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture degree in 1993.

After graduation, he interned with The Saratoga Associates in Saratoga Springs, NY and with Ross/​Fowler in Knoxville, TN before obtaining his license in 1996.

After contributing to a variety of projects such as the Market Square Redevelopment, World’s Fair Park, Tennessee Bicentennial Capital Mall, The Country Music Hall of Fame and McGhee Tyson Airport, Mr. Pethel opened his own firm in 2005.

The Penland Studio provides design and consulting landscape architectural services for projects of all scales ranging from backyard renovations to campus planning and everything in between.
