It’s hard to get even remotely excited about most visitor centers, but this one is special. Local public radio station WDVX, which specializes in good olé roots, bluegrass, mountain music, etc., is in the same 100-year old building, and you can hear free live music here every day from noon to 1 in the visitor center. They have a nice stage set up, with just enough folding chairs and walking space surrounding it. Musicians and bands definitely vary with regard to styles, but from what I’ve gauged listening to the program on the radio, you’re rarely short on talent at these performances. Plus, you’re right around the corner from Market Square, a really nice downtown cluster of restaurants and shops. Lunches, sweets, and drinks are available to purchase. And they do have the obligatory array of locally made products and merchandise.
