Description

Specialties

First Generation Farmers is a non-profit community farm in California’s East Bay Area.

We offer our produce year-round at local farmers’ markets on a donation basis, we grow dozens of types of specialty vegetables: kohlrabi, purple cauliflower, heirloom tomatoes, red Russian kale, etc.

And host on-site field trips and visit classrooms in the area, we demonstrate sustainable agriculture techniques and talk about dairy goats, composting, chickens and more.

We also hold hands-on demonstrations with special needs groups.

On Fridays, we invite the community to harvest with us.

History

Established in 2013.

First Generation Farmers was founded in 2013 to engage more young people in agriculture. We help aspiring farmers by providing them with the resources, farming expertise, and land to cultivate their own crops.

FGF was created because there aren’t enough farmers in the US: The average farmer is 58 years old and a quarter of farmers will retire by 2020, according to the USDA.

Supported by an East Bay Area farming family with decades of experience, FGF was founded by Alli Cecchini and Christian Olesen.

We have a rotating group of eight to 12 young farmers who live on our farm and gain practical experience by harvesting sustainably grown specialty crops year-round.

We also involve the community in agriculture by inviting local residents to Friday harvest days, and we offer our produce on a donation basis at weekly farmers’ markets.

Meet the Business Owner

Alli C.

Business Owner

Alli Cecchini is a 26 year old agripreneur who attended University of Florida on a full ride volleyball scholarship from 2006 – 2009. She graduated with a B. A in Elementary & Special Education and attended Grand Canyon Business school from 2010 – 2011. After living in Israel and Italy for two years and working on a Kibbutz she decided to come home to her family’s farm. Alli comes from a long lineage of farmers. Her family has been farming in the Bay Area for more than a century. Shortly after coming home and working on the farm Alli became passionate about her generation (millennials), or lack there of, getting into farming and so founded First Generation Farmers NPO in June of 2013.
