This place is so cool– check website for PYO schedule– $ 2 /​lb for straweberries?! $ 1.20 /​lb for beets?! Easily worth the trip from Brooklyn– check out their farm store down the road as well as Kinderhook Farms for the best lamb, beef and pork in NYS (maybe even the WORLD!!!)

Until today we (my husband and myself) used to be the loyal customers of Samascott farm in Kinderhook, NY. We visited it for more than 10 years and usually spent more than $ 40 per visit in a season. We just love to pick up berries, fruits and vegetables, and we loved this farm. Until today. We saw a message on their website saying that strawberries are ready for pick up. Also it seemed too early for strawberries to be ripe we decided to give it a try. At the entrance we noticed some changes: now you have to stay in line to enter the farm and again stay in a long line to exit, which seemed quite inconvenient. You can’t just park anyplace and go to the store to pick up a map or pay for the goods as it used to be.
As we expected strawberry on the field didn’t look good, it was unripe and needed at least one more week of sun. We didn’t even taste it, it looked absolutely unappealing. So we decided to come back in a week. Other vegetables they had, such as rhubarb and pees, were beyond our interest.
On our way out we were stopped by a sales assistant (later calling himself a manager) and asked to pay $ 5 per person for nothing. As we didn’t pick up a single berry we suggested him to check our car and let us go. He refused implying that we might have consumed some. We didn’t share his idea of having 5 pounds of green strawberries for lunch as well as 6 pounds of pees or rhubarb for 10 bucks, maybe because we are picky and have different diet, so we refused to pay. The guy took a picture of our car plate and threatened us. Well, he can be proud of himself, he performed his duty and squeezed the money out of us. When we insisted on having a receipt, «the manager» tried to write something on a scrap paper. We asked for a real receipt, that he eventually produced to us.
So we left feeling disappointed and humiliated. I don’t think 10 bucks will make the farm owners richer, but if the policy of humiliating customers make them happy, they won’t stay long. If they judge people by the way they are themselves and suspect a thief in everyone, they won’t stay long. Because there are other farms, where no one will search your car and accuse you in secretly eating their products, where people are treated with respect and courtesy. This is the place we’ll go.

What a great local place to shop! Great gifts as well as plants; however none of my vegetables I bought this year made it ;) we’ve lived in six differ states and visited lots of corn mazes, this is by far the best one! Great homemade ice cream!

Great farm! We came here during berry season. We stopped here for blueberries and strawberries! There are tons of apple trees everywhere and cherry trees. This is a big farm you can definitely walk to the locations of the fruits that are spread out at the farm but it is definitely easier to drive to each location when you enter the farm.
There are also numerous different kinds of vegetables you can also pick. They sell by weight and also offer their own ice cream and apple cider by the gallons.
Prices are very reasonable we brought home 2 quarts full of blueberries, strawberries, 2 ice cream cones, a pint of apple cider and a couple handful of string beans just for about $ 20 total.
Plan to call ahead of time to ask for a list of pickable produces.

I’ve been to Samascott Orchards a handful of times and enjoy their pick-​your-​own fruits and veggies. What keeps me coming back is the large variety I get to pick fresh off the farm. The website lists which fruits/​veggies are available to pick and the prices per pound. They do require $ 5 per person minimum for purchase but that’s easy when you’re getting a little bit of everything.
Bring your own containers and get them weighed on your way in to get a map so you won’t have to purchase cardboard containers in store. But if you forget your own, no worries because they’re $ 1.50 each. My family and friends always have a good time here and the fruits/​veggies are deliciously fresh!

This is probably the best pick your own farm in the area. I have been to all the major ones. They have black raspberries, gooseberries, strawberries, blueberries, sour, red, yellow, rainier, cherry, apples of all kinds, pears, plums, and many more things.
The people are laid back and you can basically eat your fill. People come with whole families and kids. It is well organized and all the bushes are easy to pick from and things are well taken care of.
Been going here since I was a kid, and will continue to do so. Prices are great as well.

Trees are clearly marked you’re given a map when you drive in that tells you what apples are where, how much they are (by lb), as well as the location and prices of all their other PYO crops. It was really great to be able to find the Honeycrisp apples and see that I was also only paying 50 cents/​lb. Very thoughtful layout and a 100% experience — MUCH better than Goold, Indian Ladder, etc for my money.
Kinderhook is a great little town to visit, too — an added bonus.

This place was awesome!
First of all I’d like to thank Unilocal because if it wasn’t for this website, I wouldn’t have been able to read reviews ahead of time and probably wouldn’t have gone to this place. We originally were planning to go to another farm called Fix Bros, but we called them beforehand and because of the cold winter we had, they didn’t have any cherries for picking. I did some research and that’s when I found Samascott!
My boyfriend’s family has a house in Sleepy Hollow Lake, which is about a 45 minute drive from this place. We were kind of skeptical about driving so far for a farm we weren’t even sure was going to be good. But we read the reviews and made the trip anyway.
In season right now are cherries, blueberries, black raspberries, zucchinis, and peas. We decided to pick the cherries and blueberries. Without realizing it, we were there for 3 hours and ended up picking 15 pounds of fruit. We had to use the ladder to get high up in the cherry trees. The good ones are all up there! The blueberry trees are really short and low to the ground so they were a lot easier to pick.
2 small baskets of cherries cost only $ 12.50. One basket of blueberries was $ 10.50. SO worth it!
If I visit the area again I will definitely return and pick some other fruits. Very very fun day. Friendly staff. The guys are very helpful when you first drive in, and Hailey at the counter is very nice!
Bring your own baskets! It was our first time so we didn’t that we had to. They have them for sale there as well for $ 1.50, but if you plan on collecting a lot, then you’re better off bringing your own, (we saw a lot of people with coolers).

Been to Indian ladder, been to bowman, been to goolds, gone to golden harvest… for straight up apple picking with lots other produce such as broccoli, eggplant, strawberries, pumpkins, pears, raspberries, squash, to even chestnuts to pick yourself… this place is the best!!! the weeks I went — bowman was 1.29/lb, samascott 75¢/lb. can’t beat it!

The map was a bit lacking and there was no real help around, but it was Monday. They get 4 stars because I went strawberry picking at the end of the season and still found some nice ones. I would go back and hope to do so for cherry picking.

Almost as good as growing it yourself.
We took our parents and 3 yr old son to Samascott for a day of psuedo farming the last weekend in June. You pick up a map and drive yourself out to the fruit/​vegetable you are interested in, fill your basket/​bag and then go back to get weighed and check out. The blueberries, black rasberries and tomatoes this year were the best we have had in a long time. Picking them out off the vine makes you think that you had a hand in growing them and somehow makes them taste more delicious.
OR, If you do not have the time you can simply drive by the market or main shed at the farm and pick up some to go. Fun for the whole family.

Went with a friend today and had a blast. Great variety in apples. The orchards are huge! And pumpkins, squash, gourds, etc etc etc… The list goes on. While the girl that worked at the register wasn’t the friendliest, she seemed pleasant enough. Oh! And the cider donuts & apple cider are made on site. Delicious :) And the prices aren’t bad either. 60 cents/​pound for apples and 40 cents/​pound for pumpkins. No where around here is cheaper than that. Will definitely go again soon!

As far as I’m concered, this is the best apple place around. Not crowded, family owned, large selection of produce for reasonable prices, not over touristy, with a great location. I’ve been going here for 25 years and I’ve been to every other apple orchard in the capitol region and can say this is the best. Great apple cider donuts, cider is good, they have locally grown cherries, concord grapes, etc… Stop by in blueberry season. They have cortland apples if you’re a pie maker. The orchards are very large and you will never tire of the gorgeous venue. Go and have a great time! I have many wonderful childhood memories here and still enjoy going as an adult. someday I hope to bring my kids here. And yes, they have pumpkins AND gourds.

The one star is for the apples… and I have a hard time even writing that! I have been going here for YEARS. This year is my last. I overpaid for the apples and pumpkins we picked by mistake. Called the owner and was spoken to very disrespectfully. At the time we went with other family members who had also purchased apples and pumpkins. When we stopped about 45 min. later for a bathroom break we compared our crops and realized our mistake. We called and were promised a refund. We called again when it wasn’t received and had a very negative experience. I don’t care at this point that I overpaid the $ 20. It was the fact that I was spoken to so disrespectfully and that I had been going here for years. So yes, let’s give the apples a 1. They deserve that. But the rest of the place? Its sure the pits and I’ll never return again. I’ll be looking for a better place that treats the customer right and respectfully next year. What a shame!

There’s nothing finer than picking strawberries or blueberries on a warm summer day in Samascott’s fields. Depending on the season you’ll also find lots of veggies also, including peas, cukes, garlic, and many more.
Have a soft serve ice cream after you weigh in and pay up in the store.

Samascott Orchards is a fun place for the family to go apple picking!
When I was a kid, my family and I would hop in the family car and head down to Samascott Orchards in Kinderhook around each Columbus Day weekend. Once here, we’d pull up to the entrance near the farmstand and the staff would hand out maps of the orchards indicating where each specific crop of apple was grown. Next, we’d drive through the rows of apple trees and park the car a few times next to our favorite apple trees: Golden Delicious (great for baking pies) and Macintosh (great snacks).
There were some apples easy to pick from the ground, but I was very agile and lightweight and would climb to the tops of the trees with a big cloth bag to pick the best apples (Climbing trees is not allowed here now). I munched down many freshly picked sweet apples. When we were done, we’d drive back to the farmstand where they would weigh the apples and we’d pay the fixed amount, minimum $ 5 per person, most apples are 50 cents per pound. I highly recommend bringing your own scale to weigh your picked apples to make sure each person has the minimum pick before checking out at the big scales at the exit. All vehicles are inspected! Great fall memories with the family!
