Outer Banks Brewing Station

Ambiance is excellent inside and out, but the outdoor backyard (first come, first serve) is the best and usually no wait if the weather is good. Food is simple fare yet well done; portion sizes are smaller than what Americans have been conditioned to. They offer beer flights and a good value ‘rainbow’ of all of the selections. They do not allow patrons to fill their own growlers (insisting on charging the full beer+growler price and slapping their sticker on it).

After coming to OBX for the past three years, I’ve finally gotten to eat here. We came in for lunch and the service was lacking painfully. We asked for two high chairs for our guests children and were told after 5+ minutes waiting for them, «Oh, we thought you said no high chairs»?
Ok, fair enough, honest mistake.
All of the server staff seemed, to us anyway, to be an incredibly foul mood. It was lunch and they probably were in for a long day with it being Friday, but not sure if the mood should have been that negative.
The food was okay, not great but okay. With the notable exception of the Cuban sandwich. It was dry, flavorless, and the parts that weren’t dry, oozed grease that splattered all over my wife’s plate. Nothing is more unappetizing than a plate full of grease.
My Shrimp and Grits were very good however. The portion was small however surprisingly filling.
Probably won’t go back because of all of the other fantastic restaurants in OBX.

I came to Outer Banks Brewing Station with high expectations, and they were exceeded by far. As I walked in I was greeted by the friendly staff and was astonished by the atmosphere. Our server was always on top of things and we were never left without a drink for very long. For our appetizer we ordered the buffalo wings and jalapeño bottle caps (Portion was huge!), which were both excellent. By far the best part of my meal was the Beer battered fried shrimp, which made even someone who isn’t big on seafood like 100% satisfied. Overall I couldn’t say anything negative about this place, and I would DEFINITELY return next time I’m in the area.

The shrimp and grits was amazing! Many different flavors cleverly combined! I also had the crème brûlée for dessert. Another win for this great local establishment. I was not able to try their home brews, but I hope to return sometime to try them.

5 stars for the beer and the brewing concept.
4 stars for service.
4 stars for the food.

Jalapeño appetizer was plentiful and tasty; really good. Crab bisque soup good too, but canned I believe.
Entrées are ok to average, nothing to write home about, but it’s a pub. Craft beer was decent and didn’t disappoint.

Wow, not used to being so ignored while sitting at the bar. Thursday night, not a totally packed bar, and 10 min before the bartender who was about 6 ft away even spoke to me. Got a beer, had asked for a menu. Didn’t get that until 2 guys sat down next to me and I asked for one (again) when they ordered. Menu came and bartender finally asked if any of us want anything after about 12 min. He was busy talking with the couple 5 seats away. My beer was pretty delicious.

Visited on a family vacation to the OBX. Its a good place fir a group (there were 9 of us). The wait was short and once we were seated, the waiter was excellent. The food, while delicious was not anything spectacular, but everyone was happy with what they ordered, including the children. The best part of the Outer Banks Brewing Station is the back yard. Yes, a yard. Just like at home, a big play area for the kids, picnic tables for the adults, live music and a drink bar serving beer and frozen cocktails (and non alcoholic popsicles for the children) I want back yard like this! After dinner, we actually spent a few hours hanging out back there, the kids played, we enjoyed the refreshments and music. It was quite a lovely evening.

Just not for me. I didn’t like any of the homemade selections they had on tap, that said the staff are friendly and the place is nice. My wife enjoyed the grilles shrimp Ceasar salad and we had a good time enjoying a drink and chatting, but I’m a beer guy so I’ll continue my search for a perfect watering hole where I can quench my thrist. Stay thristy.

Even with the full house the place is not that noisy as other similar pubs. Good beer selection, food is well-​cooked and delivered quite fast, no long wait.

Obx brewing station has amazing beers… and as a plus really good food. We come from the land of good beer, and are always on the lookout of the best local beers. OBX brewery is it. I tried the sampler. Every single beer was amazing. Even the IPA was good and I hate hoppy beers.
This place doesnt have many vegan options, but the few they do have are really good. The veggie burger is exceptional. Try that. The other options are good but they dont come close. So far this place has one of the 2 best veggie burgers in OBX but being a chipotle burger it has some kick. The weak point was the sesame seed bun from a bag. The highlight was the fries. Both sweet potato and regular fries seemed fresh cut and were delicious. I ordered the appetizer sweet potato fries with the maple bbq. yummmmm
Id like to take off ½ a star for the bad music. We went yesterday (Thursday) and the guy was a singer/​guitar player doing covers with the sound too loud and not mixed well. We asked to be far from the music and thankfully that was possible.
Overall a must stop if you love beer.

Weird night for a review as I expected to give this place a 5. Seating was slow as the hostess seemed to be on the phone for 5 minutes. Finally brought to our table to revive the smallest table in the place which was only 33% full. The table turned out to be better as less people around.
Beer… Couldn’t find a beer I like — just me on that one. Not the brews fault, although they could have a fallback plan. Wine list did not make me want a glass.
Apps… Crap soup only warm/​Luke warm. A salad omg. Unfortunately I only eat iceberg lettuce. After a discussion, the waitress brought me out Caesar salad with some sort of not not balsamic dressing.
Dinners… Small plate of pan seared scallops– pretty good, but risotto was way too salty. Otherwise good. Small plate shrimp and grits. Again warm and this time not very flavorful.
Service was good, except for the iceberg discussion. Otherwise good.
Just can’t see myself coming back.

I stopped in to watch the Super Bowl and had a terrific evening. I arrived around 5 PM and sat at the bar. It was not yet crowded. The bartender was wonderful, very friendly and helpful in choosing beers for my flight. He genuinely seemed happy to be there. The bar is a very long arc with good views of the smaller screens, and I was able to see the huge screen from my seat closer to the front door. A second bartender arrived and was equally terrific. As the crowd grew, they kept everything hopping and checked many times to see if anything was needed.
The Lemon Grass and Pant-​a-​nator were hits. The portobello sandwich met my bar food expectations. It was simple and tasty and the wedge fries were fine.
We had a miserable storm out and this was a wonderful, welcoming haven. I’ll be back.

Let me tell you three things I hate about restaurants:
1. Places that try rely on a gimmick to sell things.
2. Places that try to be too smart for their own good only to suck at everything at the same time.
3. Places that add insult to injury by rubbing salt in the wound of the above two things with crazy ass high prices.
If you like the above three concepts then come on down to Outer Banks Brewing. If you like getting value for your money without getting hosed then this place should be a resounding «Hell No»!
Let’s go through a few greatest hits:
* As other Unilocalers have described, the service here is lackluster. We waited a few minutes at the hostess stand to be seated (maybe the place was half full at best — mid afternoon on a weekday) and then the server took quite a long time in between visits as she seemed to be a combination of slow in general plus overwhelmed at the number of tables she had which is funny because again, it wasn’t that busy.
* Flat out the food sucks, period. Everything was astoundingly overcooked. Server never asked how we wanted the burger cooked because I’m guessing it’s a frozen crap patty anyway but it comes out charred black on one side. The crab cake sandwich is listed on the menu as «lightly fried» which again is total BS as it was (tink-​tink-​tink or the sound of me legit tapping it off my plate) rock hard and lovingly full of filler. As someone who comes from the Philly area lets just leave it that this place is clueless when it comes to how to make a steak sandwich. The best thing I can say for that is simply… NO!
* You are nickel and dimed for everything plus they are lovingly un-​health conscious since you need to pay to sub fried crap out for something non-​fried which in this day and age to me is hard to fathom.
Look, I suppose part of this is on me as overall I don’t do beer thing. But when I have at these little local wanna-​be brew pub gimmick places overall they usually suck either with the beer or with the over priced hipster-​cutesy-​poorly executed menu. I don’t care if there’s a windmill outside or if Guy showed up, because if you look at the reviews for a lot of his places you’ll see that’s a hollow endorsement, because the fact is that the food is wildly overpriced, poorly executed and the service staff is apathetic. Sure it’s only my opinion and it’s only based on only one visit but it was my visit and honestly it was bad enough that I’ll insert the cliché that I wouldn’t come back here even if it were for free/​you couldn’t pay me to eat here again. Easily the worst crap I experienced in six days in the OBX.

As luck would have it, while I was on a business trip a week back I saw an episode of Diner’s Drive-in’s and Dives and this place was on the program. After seeing the amazing food I wanted to come check this place out. Also, being a huge fan of beer how can you resist going to a brewery?
This place gets 3 stars from me for the service and beer choices. I did not eat here because of the recent reviews I read. I couldn’t believe that a place being featured on a show would have taken a dive but then I realized that the original chef was no longer there. Instead of risking a bad experience I decided to stick with beer.
The bartender was very nice and accommodating. I got my flight of beers and relaxed after a day of work. When you are at the bar facing the kitchen and you are alone, you tend to see a few things. Nothing completely off putting to me but maybe to some (etiquette and conversation being the main items).
If you are in the area, give the beer a shot. Their lemongrass beer was the best of the bunch.

I really enjoyed visiting the Outer Banks Brewing Company in learning more about their facility. It is the first wind powered Brewery in all of the United States. That itself made it quite interesting. The list of beers that it had looked quite impressive and was very extensive. Personally, I’m not a beer drinker so I didn’t taste what they were serving but enjoyed reading about the process and having a bite to eat.
Its, fairly Plain Jane inside it had a nice long bar that look more like it belongs in ice cream store but Who am I to judge. We sat in a booth and had lunch. The brewery was very clean and offered a variety of different foods to eat. We try the hamburger, calamari and how special. All of the items were good. I certainly wouldn’t say they were great but it was a nice stop for lunch, nothing really memorable about the food but the location and learning more about the brewery was a treat.
I think it might this place might turn into a really fun bar and have a lot of interesting people. When we were there there weren’t many people s it was kind of a late lunch and before dinner. Overall it was an enjoyable experience and I’m quite happy that we stopped here and enjoyed the OBX Brewing Company.
What’s a girl to do? Well, you stop and try new things when you’re on the road, it keeps things exciting.

Went late with a group. Food is served until 10 pm. Received very good service. Foods included fried oyster small plate, steak salad, small shrimp and grits, scallops, steak sandwich. All were delicious. Enjoyed the Lemongrass wheat beer. Beware tho. If you pay with cash you may not receive your coin change. So adjust the tip amount according.

Looks like a fun atmosphere on probably any night other than the Saturday night when I came by. Not sure how else to say it but service-​wise, just didn’t feel welcome here. For example I was asked if I wanted a menu. Who does that? Do people go to restaurants now to not eat? Weird.
So then scanning the menu, um, hmm. There isn’t much on this menu, except maybe limited reasons to not present the menu to a hungry patron. It’s possible it’s just my taste. Fried chicken sandwich, oyster po boy, chicken wrap … just not feeling this. Cut my losses with a steak salad which was actually really tasty, filling, and a hit for the price.
Not bad and may stop back next time we’re in town with more time to sample some beers and maybe more of the menu.

Let me preface: It was hot mess.
We wanted to go here since it is pretty much the only brewery in the area. We get inside and this kid looks like he doesn’t know what to do with us. He eventually leads us to a table in the corner on what seems to be a stage area when not in use for dining. And so we wait…
Tick tock.
No one ever comes by. My boyfriend had to flag another waitress down who was serving the table next to us. He asked if she was our waitress and she told us she was not, but took our drink order. I think it was a safe call for this lady to end up being our waitress instead of whoever was supposed to take care of us. She takes our orders and we go through another round of waiting. Boyfriend and I get on our phones — waitress then comes by to give us our drinks saying «You guys texting each other?» Ha ha… Not.
Anyways, we end up getting a flight of beers and some calamari. The flight of beers was a generous portion of 4 tasting glasses of our selection. I enjoyed the lighter side of beers with their version of Hefeweizen and another light beer. Boyfriend got a stout and another beer I can’t remember. Boyfriend is big on stouts so when I saw the face he made — I had to taste for myself. Scrunchy face — it tasted like something burned. Badly. I don’t know if that’s the taste they were going for, but I’m used to my stouts tasting like an alcoholic coffee of sorts. The food was better. The Calamari was cooked great and there’s a good mix of small squid and tentacle rings. I didn’t like how you have to pay extra for marinara dip since I wasn’t a fan of the remoulade that originally comes with it.
Overall, the service or lack there of really set the tone of the place and the awful tasting stout sealed thoughts about the visit here. Eek! Me thinks not is right.

Das Bier ist wirklich lecker, wir hatten ein Lemongras Wheat. Das Essen war leider nicht ganz so gut, die Hushpuppies trocken, Crab Dip schmeckte gut, Cuban Sandwich etwas geschmacklos, das Crab Cake Sandwich schmeckte nur nach Panade. Die Nachspeise Crème Brulee war super. Die Einrichtung wirkt leider nicht gemütlich, sondern nur abgewohnt.

I have been to Outer Banks Brewing Station twice now and I have had a good experience on both occasions. OBX Brewing Station is in Kill Devil Hills near Nags Head and it has one of the coolest atmospheres around. It is the first wind powered brewery in America, which is a pretty cool claim to fame. The interior is huge. They have an upstairs, downstairs, and a pretty big bar. They also have an outdoor area that has a kid’s play area, if your little ones need to run off some pre or post dinner energy.
Both times I have been here it has been for dinner and drinks. Everything I’ve tried on the dinner menu is very good. I will say that the dinner entrees are pretty pricey for a brewpub, but you can easily get an affordable sandwich or burger for dinner as well. We were starving when we got here so we went ahead and put in an order of hushpuppies and got a beer flight (don’t want to be drinking on an empty stomach). The hushpuppies came out quick and there were plenty of them. Way too many for just the two of us to finish. They were very good though. They had a little spice to them and came with a honey butter that complimented well.
The beer here is average which is disappointing. There are a few standouts that I have tried, but nothing has really blown me away. A flight is $ 8 for four samples which isn’t a great deal. The best beers for me are the LemonGrass Wheat Ale and Hugh Hefeweizen. That is odd for me because I normally like hoppier beers, but there IPA’s here are just not cutting it.
For dinner I ordered the Yard Bird Sandwich; I would highly recommend. It is a lightly breaded piece of fried chicken that comes topped with a cilantro lime aioli. The aioli isn’t overpowering and lets the flavor of the chicken shine through. I know that this is an odd comparison, but the chicken tastes like O’Charley’s chicken fingers, which is absolutely a good thing. I ordered the sweet potato fries which were solid, and made even better by the dipping sauce. It was some sort of a mesquite BBQ sauce. Sounds like an odd combo, but it definitely works.
Every time that I have been to OBX Brewing I’ve had really great service. The servers are friendly and talkative. They constantly keep the water and beer flowing. Service is fairly quick from my experiences as well.
OBX Brewing serves up some good pub food, with friendly service, and a cool atmosphere. The beer is average, but it is worth it to come out and support a local brewery and relax in the atmosphere by the beach.
