A-OK pretty much sums up Hirohachi. At least the sushi chef here was not peddling me rolls, unlike its next door Sansei.

This sushi bar is HORRIBLE! The sushi isn’t made well(I almost choked on seaweed from a roll unraveling). The prices are over 2x most sushi bars, so I expected good food, but the fish is just okay — the pieces are incredibly thin and sad looking. The edamame was completely mushy and the tempura was raw. Also the service is atrocious. We sat at the bar and still had the hardest time getting the attention of the sushi chef, who was not busy at all, just ignoring us. I know this place is staying open because of overflow from Sansei(which always has a wait), but I can’t imagine they have any repeat business. Three of us ate there for $ 175, but none of us were full, just fed up, when we left. Please just wait for a table at Sansei.

I was so, so disappointed in this place. I really wanted to give it one star, but I felt bad. The food here is REALLY expensive for what you get. We ordered: Udon — 12.00 Sashimi combo — 30.00 Salmon nigiri — 7.95 The udon portion size was shockingly small and for $ 12 I expected more. The size of each sashimi piece was also the smallest of any sushi restaurant I have ever been to. The waiter seemed aloof and inexperienced. The location of this restaurant is also pretty non-descript — tucked away in a strip mall. I really wish we had gone somewhere else.

Mediocre at best. Everything was fresh, but it seems that they are new to the business, as the waiter didn’t know how to do his job, and the preparation of the food was very sloooow. With this in mind, the prices are astronomical! This is the tipping point, I’m afraid, as for all its shortcomings it would have been decent, perhaps quaint, if it hadn’t cost an arm & a leg. Sushi connoisseurs won’t find/have a good experience here, especially for the price, but if you are casual about sushi and have wads of cash to throw away, you might give it a try, if nothing else is open.

Update 12÷27÷07: Hirohachi has CLOSED. The landlord raised the rent and forced him out. Word is the owners are moving back to Japan. So so sad! :-(My whole family, and many friends, will miss you Hiro!!! I would give this place 10 stars if I could, it’s that good! Every sushi place I go to now, I compare to this one. Everything is super fresh and high quality. Be sure to make reservations, because this place doesn’t hold many people and can fill up quickly. Worth every penny!
