The Pelican Key Largo Cottages

Awesome place… like others have said, very clean. My wife checked the mattresses and every nook and cranny.
I love the vibe, we sat at the docks, enjoying the view, sunset and relaxing while drinking some cold brews from our cooler.

It’s a GREAT LOCATION and despite how small the bathroom is it didn’t get very humid or hot after a shower. The beds are not queen sized bed (they’re full sized which is not comfortable for 2 adults) if you stay in a 2 bed room. A microwave and fridge is provided and all in all there’s not much to complain about. All I can say is that it could of been bigger. Oh lastly they hardly have any power outlets.

Stayed at the Pelican right after Lobster Mini Season this year, and was happy with the experience overall. My only two complaints would be 1.) Room size and 2.) Limited space for launching boats…
The price point was perfect at $ 100/​night for the room and $ 16/​night for the dockspace. I usually don’t pay for dockage in the keys but didn’t mind due to the cheap cost of the room — and in all fairness, they DO have a really nice dock with all the bells & whistles… LED lighting, dedicated slips, new structure, nice fish cleaning station, plenty of ramp depth. Everything inside the room & outside was sufficiently clean (sometimes rare in the Keys) and up-​to-​date. Nice atmosphere throughout the entire property, and surprisingly quiet. Lots of shade and palm trees combined with a few furnished tiki huts allows for some enjoyable party/​eating space.
The rooms are small — at least the $ 100/​night room is… I mean REALLY small. I shared the place with my cousin and we both agreed that it was uncomfortable for two people and that we would upgrade to a bigger room next time we visited. The beds could have been more comfortable as well. For what it’s worth, the name of our room was «Sunburst» and it was the room closest to the Overseas Hwy. In other words, farthest from the water and noisy at night when trucks are passing by.
After we unpacked our gear it was time to launch the boat. Challenging to say the least. The road leading to the ramp/​dock/​bay is very narrow and lined with leaning palm trees that jut out into the pathway. All of the parking spaces that accompany the cottages on each side were full, making the 180 degree multi-​point rotation of the trailer nearly impossible. The office for the place is all the way down by the ramp… so by the time I discovered what I was in for, I actually had to back all the way out of the pathway to the last parking spaces (mine that were reserved for my room) and even then it was extremely tight. This can be an issue if other guests are arriving while you’re trying to manipulate the limited space that’s provided. Eventually, I got the 16 ft boat turned around and backed it all the way down to the ramp. A successful launch of a larger boat will require some pre-​planning and careful consideration. I am at about 19 foot total trailer length including tongue, boat, and motor…
The harbor just off the dock (Buttonwood Sound) is lined with small sailboats and offers quick access to the channel. The continental breakfast was extremely basic but I wasn’t expecting omelettes so no disappointment there. If you want breakfast, treat yourself to Harriett’s down the street.
Staff was friendly and accommodating (and even let us check-​in two hours early — BIG plus!!!) and I will be returning to The Pelican. It is a far better option than some of the local alternatives, and cheaper to boot.

This was our first stop on our Florida Keys vacation. Nice shoreline cottages. Tropical feel with two bar\restaurants just down the beach. Rooms were small but adequate. The shower head was broken and looked like it had been left broken for some time. We enjoyed our stay. Thanks.

Booked several nights here but ended up canceling upon visiting facility. There is no place to swim… the bay is very swampy and the facility looks a bit worn out. Ended up calling my stay two days prior to RSVP and thy ended up charging us for a one night stay fee (they had a specific time that you have to cancel, 1am :/…Couldn’t be more upset about this policy… will never book again. Best to stay at the holiday inn up the road…

Lizards everywhere. The beds sucked, and everything was old and musty. I was just happy to be in a tropical place while the rest of America was dealing with a snowstorm for a very low price. I did not mind at all. My husband did though. I’m very fond of blue waters, coconut trees and the little lizards that come in to chill. They’re cute to me. Cheap. Cheap. Cheap. ;-)

I stayed here for two nights and had a great time. The staff was welcoming and informative, helping me get a taxi lined up and answering my questions about the area. I stayed in one of the smallest rooms, the Pieces, and it was just as advertised. It was a small room, perfect for one person and doable for a pair. Everything was clean and the room had a microwave, mini fridge, and TV with cable. But, if you are going to Key Largo you probably aren’t planning to spend too much time in your room. The property was awesome, a beautiful view to lay out and relax and within walking distance to many good restaurants. The price point is amazing for what you get. I would love to come back for another stay with a group of friends!

I stayed at the Pelican Cottages hotel/​motel in Key Largo with a friend for 5 nights a couple of months ago (October 2013). We thoroughly enjoyed our stay (Roseate cottage). The rates were super affordable and the staff was really friendly and helpful. We enjoyed fishing from the pier and kayaking to the island nearby as well as the beautiful beach and dock overlooking on the shore of the Florida Bay. We could see the sunset from our doorstep and the property was really to some excellent diving spots. We had a great time and would definitely stay at the Pelican again!

The cutest little hotel right on the water! Absolutely adorable and perfect for our one night quick stay. Would return again for longer!

Amazing location and extremely reasonable rates– I’m giving 4 stars, for these two reasons. If I was just rating the room, I’d go lower– but who cares, when you have access to free kayaks/​canoes and that beautiful view?
The breakfast was included and it was typical hotel/​motel continental– I’d go up the street, if you’re actually hungry.
If you’re looking for luxury amenities, don’t bother coming here. But, if you are looking for a great location that’s extremely affordable and relaxing– check out the Pelican.

It is now the Monday after my first Key Largo weekend with my girlfriend. It feels like just yesterday I was sitting on The Pelican’s dock with cool beers and an immaculate sunset and that’s because it totally was. I chose the Palm suite because it has a king sized bed. I am told the units were built with «Old Florida Pine, even termites can’t get into it». Enormous, old, beautiful trees shade the entire area. We were steps away from the water, the complimentary breakfast was more than adequate and they allowed you a free kayak or canoe whenever you wanted to use it. It felt centrally located, we were within a couple miles of many restaurants, Publix and John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park. So the air conditioner unit was a little loud and it dripped a little, and I am glad we brought our own pillows and blanket but that is part of the experience. We felt extremely cozy and we will definitely be back, I see no reason to stay anywhere else.

This place looks like something out of a 60’s/70’s surf movie. There are few things I love more than that decade of surf movies, so I was immediately smitten. It’s a Bruce Brown film made into a little camp of palm trees and cottages.
We were checked in by a cute hippie and sent to our tiny room that we reserved ahead of time called «The Banana Room» which I know sounds like a male strip club private suite, but I really like bananas… and dick, soooo…
Now when I say this room was «tiny» I mean that I could have folded it up and put it in my pocket. It was like 10×6…you know, the size of the large unit at Public Storage? Well this room would have fit inside it… with room to spare. I both hated and loved it.
The actual property was beautiful. Right on the water, hammocks and kayaks (free for guests to use) and lots of places to sit and relax. We were able to walk to a bar down the way and dinner from here, but in general, there isn’t much around this part of Key Largo. We bought a bottle of champagne at the CVS across the street and enjoyed it while we watched the sunset from one of the tables over the water… absolutely perfect.
They have serve-​yourself breakfast in the mornings in the little kitchen and it was superrrrr cute (just basic continental breakfast crap, but the kitchen and dining areas were adorable).
I would stay here again I think, but I would probably book a bigger room and would again only stay for one night. It’s the perfect place when you need a vacation from your vacation. Oh my god, what a spoiled little brat I sound like/​am.

Cottages on the water with two private docks offer relaxing views. The only real issue we had was the rough, noisy mattresses. We found them hard and uncomfortable and so creaky we were waking each other up through each night. The Pelican could really be a standout if they invested in some new mattresses and gussied up a bit!

My boyfriend and I stayed here over Valentines Day weekend and were quite pleased when we pulled up. Very tropical, well maintained grounds, and hidden from the main road. We were really looking forward to our stay, but were not entirely pleased with our room. We stayed in The Conch. This place really had the potential to be quaint and cozy but with a few faults like the plastic on the lamp shade, plastic-​type comforter, the window pain on the door popped off a few times, bare walls, an unknown odor, etc. not to mention it was a very small room. The room consisted of a bed with an armoire/​TV, and mini fridge. It really needed a fresh coat of paint and new bedding. Bathroom was clean. I loved the character of the grounds and I would stay again, but I would spend the money to stay in a bigger cottage with the water view.

Called and stayed last minute. Cottage was good nice and private. Clean which was great. I would recommended.

What a great find in Key Largo! We booked our reservation on-​line, and had no idea what to expect when we arrived. Boy were we pleasantly surprised! Very clean rooms, great view, super friendly staff who bent over backwards to accommodate us! Continental Breakfast was perfect and even included warm fresh made waffles! Very reasonable too! We got way more than we expected! We enjoyed our stay so much and even booked reservations to return 2 more times before we left! Can’t wait to go back!

From the moment got to Key Largo, we felt welcomed and the Pelican was the perfect balance of relaxation and activity for our four night stay there. We popped into the water from the hotel dock using one of the kayaks they have to explore the mangroves in the bay and saw a manatee. We watched the sunset from the beach hammock. We walked two doors over to Mrs. Macs for delicious breakfasts and dinners and just down the road to a dive shop to go snorkel one afternoon.
By far the cheapest place we found for lodging in the keys, it nonetheless comes with a lot of great free extras like a library of DVDs to borrow, grills, water crafts, bikes and lots of little areas to relax in on your tropical vacation. Most things you would need (pharmacy, food, water gear, liquor) are walking distance away. The rooms are clean and nice.
We stayed in the tiniest room, Heliconia, our first two nights and it exceeded my expectations. It’s small but there’s room to move and there’s AC, fridge and microwave. Mermaid was a great room for our other two night and a little plain but very comfortable. My only complaint about the Pelican would be that the free breakfast is not so great (bagged pastries and sunny d) and they only do it until 9:30 am (I’m on vacation!) but considering all the other great stuff included I can’t even really complain.
Stay here, you won’t regret it. I’ll be back for sure next time I’m in the keys.

Clean, inxpensive, great location! I have stayed here twice — it’s perfect for a quick getaway. The staff is friendly and accomodating and the grounds have everything you need for relaxaxtion — access to the bay, BBQ grills galore and a hammock for napping!

I live on a boat close by and recommended this place to some friends. They couldn’t say enough good things about the hotel and the staff. Super clean, keys feel, view, everything. They even made me go over to check it out. First night they stayed In the small rooms, and wow are the small but they were pleased. The next night the decided to stay and were even more pleased with the bigger room. I highly recommend this place.
