Door to Door Storage & Moving

I thought I struck gold finding Door to Door. Then slowly things just started going downhill. And now I’m so frustrated that this was really just not worth the «savings» for going with this company.
First of all — these containers delivered are a piece of junk. Broken latches, missing hinges, plywood that is bowing. You get to put all of your possessions in them and pray that they are okay. Not a good feeling.
Second — when they tell you they can deliver them to your new house they NEGLECT to tell you that there’s a week to two weeks time between when they get to the new location where your stuff WILL sit at a storage facility… and you are left without ANYthing and you can’t do much about it.
In addition — they NEVER call you back and «confirm» anything when you call and ask questions. Like most «Customer Service» lines, they deflect and say they will get an answer for you and just never do. It’s very frustrating.
So just be warned. You get what you pay for. You pay ½ of what a mover will cost in order to use these containers, and you get less than HALF of what you would expect from a reputable company.

Let me start by saying that throughout my move with Door to Door I had a very positive experience with the drivers and customer support representatives. The price was lower than most competitors so in the end you get what you pay for, but the rating for this review is specifically aimed at the Branch Manager of the Seattle location, Grant D.
The issue arose after some confusion with picking up the box without giving us a heads-​up at the start of our move; the box was half-​filled and a driver picked it up early in the morning without any sort of advance notice. My wife contacted their customer service and asked to speak to the manager, after which she was connected to Grant who introduced himself as «the manager of the managers.» Over a few phone conversations with my wife, this gentleman was constantly rude, disrespectful, and very unprofessional, and twice throughout our painful interaction with him he implicitly called my wife a liar.
He claimed that he had spoken to the driver and that the driver had called ahead before picking up the box and even after being told that we have double-​checked our call history, voice mailbox, and even the phone records through Verizon and there is no trace of a phone call originating from Door to Door, he responded, and I quote, «Who should I believe? My driver, or you?» This impolite and offensive behavior of his continued in every unfortunate phone call my wife had with him, after which I was forced to call him myself just to be disrespected in a similar manner.
After the driver finally came back with the box (so we get a chance to actually fill it this time) he told us that Grant had never called him — despite him claiming so – and that he was unaware that a call was necessary prior to pickup. After losing hours and having to postpone our move for a day, I can file this as an honest mistake on the driver’s side possibly due to miscommunication, but the Branch Manager’s ill manner and absolute disregard for customer service is unforgivable and extremely improper.
TL;DR — Please, do yourself a favor and do not do business with Door to Door’s Seattle location until the branch manager, Grant D, is inevitably let go.

I had an exceptional experience working with Door to Door — due in large part to the great service and communication from Jim S in the Kent, WA location — starting with my initial contact. I’ll note that everyone I came in contact with was extremely professional. I moved from San Francisco to North County San Diego. I had 2 different pick up locations and one drop off. Door to Door delivered the pods on time for loading — including one 30 minute load window in SF. For delivery in San Diego, I was given a delivery window that was initially what I would consider long for such a close distance (7 days from pick up), but Door to Door exceeded my expectations and delivered on Friday following the Tuesday pick up (beating their commitment by 4 days).
I was dubious about the company as I came across them in an ad and reached out randomly for a quote. I was immediately impressed with the responsiveness and had a direct phone line contact to Jim S for all my questions. Make a point to communicate your needs/​expectations and then bench them against what Door to Door can commit to.
I would strongly recommend Door to Door.

I’m reviewing the Washington location although we had our pods loaded in California and unloaded in Maryland. I will say I was NERVE WRACKED from the moment we made the reservation until they picked up the loaded pods. I kept thinking something was going to go wrong and either our things would be stolen or we would be overcharged or some other catastrophic thing would happen to everything we owned. NONE of that happened. I must have called customer service 20 times once the order was placed to verify, verify and verify everything again. And EVERY time they were very patient and explained everything.
Moving your entire home in huge boxes across the country is a big process so there needs to be lots of communication and verification of what you want and need.
Everyone invloved in getting our belongings to our new home was great!
It’s not a cheap process. But of all the places we looked it was the most reliable with no hidden fees/​costs.
Our pods arrived a day early and we were able to keep them in storage for up to a month, which we needed.
They delivered everything to our new place and not one item was broken or out of place. Needless to say we packed those pods to the gills!
I would use them again in a heart beat.
Moving across the country isn’t easy but this company definitely allowed us to worry about 1 less thing.

Another reviewer on here noted that Door to Door over-​promises and under-​delivers. This sums up our experience with Door to Door in a nutshell. To start, they were extremely uncommunicative and we had to reach out to them multiple times to find out when the pod would be delivered for loading. At our destination, we were told our pod would arrive by a certain date, but in the end it was delivered a week late. Dealing with customer service was a nightmare; they were extremely unhelpful, never took accountability for the promises they made us, and we had to call back multiple times just to get answers to our questions. Due to all of this we asked for a refund or discount, but neither was granted. However, we were offered the laughably low refund of $ 100 if we were willing to rent a truck, drive to their storage facility, and empty our pod there instead of having it delivered to our house. I could not warn more strongly against using their services; this company is the absolute worst and if there is any justice in the world (note: there is not) they will be out of business by the end of the year.

BUYER BEWARE! I echo the sentiments of MANY posters here who have had HORRENDOUS experiences with this company. Let me warn you upfront, you WILL BE SORRY that you used this company for your move. Don’t be surprised if you see UNAUTHORIZED CHARGES on your credit card for outrageous amounts that you are never made aware of. I got a quote for a one container move for $ 1109 and a two container move for $ 1457. I needed a third container the day of the move, which was, admittedly added last minute. Two days later, I saw an additional charge for $ 831 on my credit card without any notification, explanation, or receipt from Door-​to-​Door. Hmmm, the difference between one container and two is about $ 300 but adding a third container, which didn’t require an additional truck, was $ 800? I’m pretty good at math, but cannot seem to add that up. In addition, I DID NOT GET ANY RECEIPTS for my move until I asked for them months later when I needed to submit them for reimbursement, and this was issued only after several emails and calls to the company. They seem to be very efficient at charging credit cards but not so effective in communicating with customers those charges. There was also an additional charge for an extra two hours of «overtime» on the day of the move which never happened (I reserved my loading dock and my moving crew for the amount of time I had the truck, and did not go over). There were also other charges («container maintenance fee»???) which were not disclosed in any of the initial quotes given to me by the company. When I attempted to address these issues, I got an initially very responsive representative named Debbie MacMonagle who promised to follow-​up, but once my move was completed and they finished charging my credit card, she VANISHED INTO THIN AIR (I do have compassion despite my ire, so I hope she’s alive and well). It was farcical when I called to speak with Debbie today, and was told that she was on the phone, was put on hold, was told a few minutes later that she was almost off the phone, and then was told a few minutes after that that in fact she was «not in the office today» and may not be back for a couple days. I literally LOL.
My move is being paid for entirely by my employer, so money is not at all the issue. I have made it clear to Door-​to-​Door that it is the principle and ethical business practices that are the issues at hand from my perspective, and I have given them ample opportunity to make things right. However, they chose to waste my time, give me the runaround, and so this review is the only recourse I have. There are many moving companies out there — read the reviews here and make the right choice — STAY AWAY, STAY FAR FAR AWAY!!!
Addendum — So, I guess Door to Door complained to Unilocal and had my review removed because I posted it for their WA, NV, and CA locations. But I did deal with all three for my move and so I believe my review was justified for all three branches. Also, the day after I posted my review, all of a sudden I get a bunch of phone calls and emails from the company wanting to «make me happy». They refunded me $ 100 which I’ve donated to the SPCA. Sorry, I can’t be bribed.

Worse experience ever! I was quoted one price and then charged another. The customer service rep would not respond to my email until I contacted BBB. Even then, we were arguing over the price that I was promised. I would highly recommend getting everything in writing and making them correct all of their quotes to you so it is clear what they are charging for so no unforeseen fees can be charged.
Bottom Line — if you promise a customer one price, you should uphold that. If you forget to add things to your price, then that’s your problem. It doesn’t matter to me how you break up the pricing internally but don’t make me pay for your mistake! I will NEVER use or recommend door-​to-​door because of this experience. I would rather pay a little more to use a different company so I don’t have to spend additional time dealing with these people. It takes more money to get new customers than it does to keep current ones happy.

My experience with this company was so HORRIFIC I don’t even know where to start– however, I must clarify that it was a female Manager, numerous customer service reps and 1 very inexperienced, complacent sales guy directly out of Kent, WA that contributed to this… The warehouse Manager, delivery driver and Manager of Operations out of the LA warehouse were courteous, professional and solution oriented. I understand that this company is moving telephone lines directly to their warehouse– WHEN this happens and you are able to completely avoid having to deal with ANYONE out of Kent, WA, then you will have a pleasant experience. I do want to express that this type of moving/​storage facility is better suited for a really small apartment move– ideally one bedroom, or two without any big items. Beyond that, it is a headache to have to rent 4 or more plywood storage units when 1 PODS storage would work. The guy out of Kent, WA sold me on the fact that Door to Door is cheaper; however, it ended up costing me more money, more time and more grief and frustration in the end. I hope this company can turn my experience into something positive before I remove my items from storage.

I used Door to door for a cross country move using pods. The move went great so I would use them again if they pack the pods.
I did have a few unfavorable incidences with customer service rep prior to move named Britney. The Salesman quoted one price and then customer service tried to charge me it with an additional $ 134 for added «Protection Plan» fee which was only explained after a considerable amount of arguing and persistence on my part, asking to be transferred to my original sales person who explained it right away. Customer service must get some kind of commission is the only thing I can assume. Two of the four representatives were extremely condescending and accused me of being mistaken and just kept repeating the same answer.
Also I noticed after reading invoice their was an additional charge for «outside of serviceable area» but was explained with a bunch of double talk what factors dictated that fee; when it is just 9 miles away from door to door facility and off the same freeway from an area not considered a «serviceable area».
The customer service agent went out of her way to get me answers, so I guess it all depends who you get…
The company associated with them in Milwaukee was amazing «Graebel Moving»! They loaded my pods which I could have never done on my own, they know how to use every inch! That’s what gets the the fourth star!

Pure storage scam. PLEASE AVOID.

Disclaimer: I am not a «troll» Unilocaler. I don’t write 1,000-word reviews of burritos or businesses I imagined to have mistreated me in some way, however the level of dishonesty this entire company (not just the Austin branch) is openly practicing is truly outrageous.
Another review called DOOR-​TO-​DOOR the «worst possible solution to store your personal items,» and yup! That’s the gist of it.
Like all their clients, I was primarily attracted by their cheap pick-​up prices and offer to match local competitors. And yes, the pickup was cheap. The service itself is also fine: they drop the box, you fill it, they pick it up… Where you’ll suffer is in the subsequent monthly payments for storage.
This, I cannot stretch enough. COMPLETELY dishonest pricing.
I’ve been forcefully with them since July and have experienced random price spikes throughout. My bill started at $ 60ish dollars a month. It is now in the $ 84 range month after month. I even had to call them three times to lower it back to this amount when they «automatically» spike it up to $ 95 range. That payment was lost money.
No credit for the following month or anything. You can literally hear the phone attendants shrug on the other line.
Apparently they had sent me an email (that looks and is filtered as spam by gmail) that announced this pay hike, weeks earlier. No option, other than a notice that your bill would be going up by 25% the following cycle unless you called and picked one of their other plans for minimal savings.
These plans, you ask? Glad to share!
They LOCK you into 3-​month, 6-​month, or 12-​month plans for minimal rebates… $ 5 – 7 difference between them each month. (But once your bill hits $ 80, you start to find that appealing.) If you do break such a lengthy guarantee – you’re forced to pay all remaining months at that price. Yup! If you want your stuff back after 3 months, you’re forced to pay the entire 12-​month difference if that was what you opted for… Why? Because they say so.
Oh, yes: they also «Strongly encourage» you to pay MONTHLY for insuring your box, which is the entire point of using this service in the first place… but nope, an extra $ 12 every month. (That’s like paying a «drying» fee for not getting your clothes back wet from the cleaners.)
Avoid at all cost for storage. They might be worth if as one-​time moving company, that’s really up to you, but PLEASE stay away if you intend to store for more than 2 – 3 months. Their system is BASED on tricking/​scamming long-​term clients.

The second half of my Door-​to-​Door experience ended at the Kent, Washington location. Thankfully, I was just as satisfied with the later half as I was with the first. The pods containing my belongings arrived two days ahead of schedule. The customer service representative, who called me, allowed me to set up a date when I could access the pods. Appreciatively, all but a single bowl survived the 2,000-mile journey.
The facility allowed the movers to move my belongings easily from the pods onto their truck. I if you are moving to the Puget Sound area and are using Door-​to-​Door, based on my encounter, I feel confident you will not have much difficulty getting access to your things.

Moving is tough. After searching the web and getting quotes from a number of moving companies, I settled on Door to Door Storage for a few reasons:
First, they were reasonably priced compared to some of the larger companies, and at the lower end of cost, but they were not the cheapest – never go with the cheapest! You’ll get what you pay for in terms of frustration! You want to find that sweet spot for price vs. quality, and you certainly don’t want to get ripped off by paying too much. I feel like I hit it right with Door to Door because I felt their quote was fair and I am fully satisfied with their service.
Second, after speaking with representatives over the phone with a few of these companies, I felt the Door to Door representative, Mike, in Kent, WA was the most personable rep I spoke to. I was greatly discouraged by reps from other companies that were monotone and unpleasant, almost robotic – I may as well have been listening to a recording. Mike gave me a quote, told me that would be the price I pay. Period. No hidden fees, and their cost breakdown was transparent and reasonable. I didn’t pay one cent over their quoted price, as stated. Mike walked me through the process (I’ve never dealt with container-​moving before) and satisfactorily answered all my questions.
Third, they have good reviews online (for a reason). There are other companies that may quote cheaper, but there were plenty of nightmarish reviews for these other container-​moving companies, which goes to show that you’ll get what you pay for. Other companies that quoted much higher had mixed reviews, so more money doesn’t exactly equate to better service, either.
Now, the experience:
Door to Door satisfactorily communicated with me every step of the way. They emailed confirmations including anticipated scheduling. Drivers called ahead when they were en route to either deliver the containers or pick them up. Representatives notified me via phone and email when my containers left from/​arrived at their storage facilities. I honestly cannot complain about any step of the process with Door to Door. I scheduled the containers to arrive at my new home the day before and indeed they were sitting in the driveway when I arrived the next day. No weathering within the containers and my belongings were as good as the day I packed them (apart from some minor inevitable shifting during transit). Nothing was damaged (although this is more about how you pack your stuff than how Door to Door ships the containers).
Door to Door’s containers measure about 5’Wx8’Lx7’H and easily fit in a parking stall, but the effective dimensions on the inside are actually about 4.5’Wx7.5’Lx6.5’H. I ordered two containers, which fit everything I needed from a ~750 sqft single bedroom apartment. Admittedly, I was worried some things would have to get ‘axed’, but I was surprised at how much actually fit in each container (I’m of the Tetris generation).
Based on my personal experience, I would have to say I’m extremely satisfied with Door to Door’s service and I would highly recommend them to anyone in need. At the very least, call them and get a quote – you may be glad you did.

Wow, I’m so surprised by the low ratings for Door to Door. My husband and I planned a cross-​country move from DC to Seattle, and we decided to go with Door to Door to transport all of our belongings. When trying to decide between three or four small pods, they said they would leave four and if one didn’t get used, they would pick it up and not charge us. Luckily, we just barely fit everything into three pods.
Everyone we dealt with at DtD was friendly and helpful. They were excellent at communicating and let us know when they would be arriving. They were spot-​on with estimated dates, which helped us in knowing when to schedule movers. We would definitely use them again in another move!

After having a good experience with Door to Door (at the Boston/​Woburn MA location) in the Fall ’09 when I needed to store some things when staging my condo for selling, I decided I would call them in preparation for this past week’s very complicated move.
This time would have been REALLY easy since I had a four-​car driveway (when the one unit came to Boston, it was on the street where it really shouldn’t have been, but that was 4.5 years ago…). Arranged the date, and I was getting THREE of those things delivered. THREE!
I was told that I would get the terms and conditions emailed to me, should read, accept and return. OK, that sounds easy enough. In the meantime, I got a call saying that I would NOT be able to get the three storage units delivered on the day I needed them, but on the FOLLOWING DAY. Well, unfortunately, that just wouldn’t work because that would mean that I would have just one day to load three units, thus unloading a two-​bedroom apartment (plus washer and dryer). Not happening. Wasn’t the plan.
I emailed Door to Door and said that unfortunately I needed to cancel since this wasn’t going to work, and just hired a mover (as in, three guys, to put everything in storage). A couple of days later, I received this email:
Margot,
I tried to call you but the call was disconnected. The Terms and Conditions for your order have still not been accepted. We do need them accepted by 4 PM today in order to move forward with your order. If we do not have the terms accepted by then, we do need to cancel the order and keep $ 50 as a cancelation fee, refunding you the remaining $ 354.88. Please call us at 888−366−722, option 2 for customer service if you have any additional questions. Thank you.
Seriously, a $ 50 cancellation fee? Are they freaking kidding? Apparently, they were, because they did NOT charge me for it in the end, but that certainly got me fired up, and here I am relaying the story once again.
Sadly, a good experience with them years ago lead to a bad experience now, and I will never call them in the future. While their local people may be great, the people in WA are clueless.

After contacting multiple other companies for moving containers, I was feeling discouraged and totally stressed out. Then I stumbled upon Door-​to-​Door. When at first it didn’t seem like it would work out to use their company, I got a call back from the sales office and Anthony had figured out a way to meet my timing limitations AND come in under cost of every other competitor. I was so shocked — it seemed too good to be true. But sure enough they delivered on every account — especially in terms of top-​quality service.
I’m so sorry to hear that other’s didn’t get to have the same experience with Door-​to-​Door. I for one was super impressed with their professionalism and helpfulness. Perhaps in the future everyone should ask to work with Anthony — because he really go the job done.

I’m actually surprised by some of these reviews and really sorry for the experiences others had with this service. I did not have a poor experience though, and was very pleased with Door to Door.
I relocated from San Diego to Seattle between the middle of December (arriving in Jan). This presented a few challenges for me, so I had options for moving services. In the past I used a U-​haul to drive stuff through the OR and CA passes. NOT FUN! It was scary and treacherous during the winter months when storms hit. My holiday plans included travel across the country, so dragging my items with me did not make sense either. I looked up the pod concept to see how it worked and if it was the best option for me.
I called Door to Door after reading multiple reviews online. It seems everyone has problems, although they appeared to have less than others. After making a quote inquiry Michael helped me out by reducing the fee if I made an immediate $ 50 refundable deposit. Sounded like a good plan so I opted for it. They quoted me $ 1300 for one container or $ 2000 for two. I ended up selecting two containers, and felt it was reasonable compared to a U-​haul rental and gas. When I include the horror of driving through the passes it becomes an even better deal!
The pods are small, which is good and bad. It makes you decide what you really need and what is just extra junk to drag around. I managed to get a full house of stuff into the two pods, but I don’t have a complete bedroom set which made it work.
I had the delivery set up a week ahead of my vacate date, and the driver was awesome. They can deliver while you’re not there with a waiver and give you a chance to describe where you want them dropped off. This can be tricky for some folks, I had a driveway to use which worked out well. Be sure to take this into consideration!!! I managed to fill the pods earlier than intended and called to request an earlier pick up date. They were amazing and called me on their day off to confirm the earlier pick up. It worked out perfectly (had it not I would have been in a lot of trouble because I needed access to the garage by that point!).
I received a call when expected letting me know the containers arrived. This was trickier because I needed them delivered Jan 2^nd, and knew they would be closed for the holiday. I asked them to drop it off for me on the 2^nd knowing I wouldn’t be there. The lady who helped me out was awesome and got me set up for a delivery when I needed it, so when I arrived at the end of an 18 day trip across country the containers were sitting outside my new house, waiting for me to move in. Nothing was broken, and they arrived on time two days later to pick up the pods again. I would say this was a well executed move by all accounts, and couldn’t have made it happen without such awesome professional service and support from Door to Door. Thank you!

Whatever you do, do not book this company. I give them one star because the employees were very nice but a very very unreliable company. I booked them to move from east to west coast because they offered me the best price. (I would now be willing to pay more for a more reputable company) I packed my things August 16 with an arrival date of August 27. It’s now over a week from that date and I’ve been on the west coast for that time without any of my belongings. Theyve changed my delivery date three times now. The company offers no help except that the delivery is estimated. For them to estimate a date that is over a week off is extremely inconvenient and unprofessional. I will never do business with them again.

I used a similar styled company in 2008 – 2009 & had a great experience. I have been price comparing lately & felt there were enough good reviews on Unilocal to give Door 2 Door a try. However, I definitely won’t be using them after talking on the phone with a sales consultant & emailing back & forth 10+ times — we are getting no where. D2D wants me to compare prices to a LARGER storage container with a competitive company. I don’t think so. I’ve tried to let the sales guys know that I’m looking at cubic feet of storage space not just at the length. He does NOT GET IT! D2D prices are not competitive & they are also «negative selling» by talking about their competitors which is such a turn off. Don’t sell me on what’s wrong with your competitors, sell me on your product. I’ve used the competitor in the past & was pleased with my experience all-​around. So in order for me to try your company, you’ve got to sell the positives of your product & be less expensive!
FYI: call the competitors b/​c they have much better deals over the phone than they do online (waiving all delivery & pick-​up fees currently with a minimum 3 mos storage commitment)!

Arg. Spent $ 5,000 for storage and total hassle.

I moved from Seattle to Bay Area in 2008. Left my box in Seattle for too many years, paid $ 80 /​month. At one point I changed my bank account and my EFT and they messed it up and payment didn’t go thru for two months. All the emails when to spam, I didn’t see the notice in the mail (by bad) and THEN they charged me $ 75 lien fee. So when they finally called me it was a total was $ 350 for them not to see my BOX! That’s right after two years of on time they almost sold off my storage box full of furniture, photographs, clothes, journals — priceless items — they almost sold it at auction!!!
OH and I found out later I could have signed a year contract and saved $ 10/​month at least. So I overspent by almost $ 500.
Recently I finally paid the $ 870 to move it down here. That’s after a $ 100 off. They wouldn’t honor the original quote of $ 700 from years ago. I understand things change, but they made a lot of money off me.
Lastly they’ll tell you it will take 4 days to move, but that’s business days NOT including Wednesday??? WHAT? Then paperwork, gets to Hayward, then they call me. So still waiting for my stuff…

We used Door To Door’s pods to move our stuff from Berkeley, CA to NoVA. We had considered other various options — UHaul, having a moving company haul our stuff, or just getting rid of all of our furniture and starting anew once arriving on the east coast.
The latter wasn’t going to happen as we had furniture pieces that were of sentimental value and well, the other two options, we opted not to go with them because we didn’t have a place to live on the east coast at that point in time.
So we went with the pods because not only were they going to haul our stuff across the country but they would store it for a set time until we had a place secured. Then all we had to do was just give them a call of when and where we wanted our pods delivered. Sounds simple, right? And it was. No hiccups, no problems.
We got 2 pods to stuff our 1 bedroom apt. into. It’s pretty tight so you just need to be tetris-​like in stuffing your belongings. They do provide some blankets to cover your stuff to prevent scratches and dust from settling.
I’d definitely use their services again.
