The Y is a powerful association of men, women, and children of all ages and from all walks of life joined together by a shared passion: to strengthen the foundations of community.
With a commitment to nurturing the potential of kids, promoting healthy living, and fostering a sense of social responsibility, the Y ensures that every individual has access to the essentials needed to learn, grow and thrive.
Though the world may be unpredictable, one thing remains certain — the Y is, and always will be, dedicated to building healthy, confident, connected and secure children, adults, families and communities.
History
Established in 1930.
One in three Americans report being a YMCA member at some point. More remarkable is the Y has touched virtually all somehow; Y’s invented basketball & volleyball, pioneered camping, public libraries, night schools, teaching English as a second language, introduced the world’s first indoor pool & group swim lessons, and offered after-school care long before the term «latchkey kids».
Y’s have a solid commitment to improving communities, and have always been flexible enough to change, to try new things, to be pioneers. Above all, Y’s are about people — all ages, races, religions & incomes. Forever mission-driven, Ys exist to mold people who care about each other, are firm in their own sense of worth & that of others, who try to foster understanding & respect, who take responsibility for their own lives & help improve the lives of others.
Today, the nation’s Y’s still provide vital services & serve as a force for hope. As we celebrate a rich history, we look forward to a brighter future.
