Looking for a new apartment in Kenosha, well keep on looking. I was here the other day with a friend apartment hunting. The office manager was cordial, to a point. She seemed pre-​occupied by her kids sending her text messages. Which, it wouldn’t have been noticeable except for the ring tone set to air horn mode. She gave us the keys and allowed us to look at the apartment alone.
You couldn’t help but to notice the lack of upkeep upon entering the building where the open apartment was. Carpet that looks like it hasn’t been cleaned in a decade or more. That familiar apartment smell that leaves you wondering just how it gets to smell that way. That smell of stale cigarettes, left out dishes, and old people rolled into one unforgettable stench.
The apartment itself was no different. Stained carpets were aplenty, though the manager assured they would be cleaned prior to move-​in. Some of the fixtures were new and some were old, giving it a modern contemporary/​bad 70’s porno vibe. You know, the gold fixtures, the gold speckled counter tops in the bathroom, you get the point.
The kitchen was adorned with those partical board cabinets, the ones you can’t get wet, because they’ll just go to hell. The oven was built for a microwave dinner, so hosting Thanksgiving is out of the question. Unless, you keep it classy with Banquet microwavable dinners.
The bathroom counter top was large, though it sits low and did not have any cabinet space underneath. The «linen closet» was more of a linen nook, as your large collection of Pert Plus bottles would have to find a new home.
The bedroom was a decent size and had a moderately spaced closet. However, upon looking out the window, you can’t help but to notice the criss-​cross patterned window adornment that vaults you back to the 70’s, again.
The balcony was bad news as you would have to step over the sliding door frame in order to get out, so drinking is not an option, because one is likely to either fall in or fall out, that is if you even remember it in the morning.
Upon returning to the management office, which looks like a glorified pool storage shed. My friend was informed that they only do one-​year leases, a full month’s rent is due for the security deposit, and none of the utilities are included, thus bringing the total of a one bedroom apartment beyond 600 dollars. It also left me scratching my head wondering just where all the security deposit money went, because it’s obviously not going to the apartment building upkeep.
There are plenty of better apartment options available in Kenosha. More specifically, Cambridge Apartments that are roughly the same amount for rent, have month-​to-​month leasing options. There is an onsite 24 – 7 maintenance man that reminds you of Gene Wilder’s Willy Wonka reincarnated in a Wisconsin woodsy man and arguably just as fun of a tour. There’s on-​site washers and dryers. The apartments are spacious and clean with completely updated fixtures and appliances. Best of all, it’s right on the lake with a private beach.
