History

Established in 2014.

Established in 1997 in Salt Lake City Utah, Barbacoa Mexican Grill had 3 flourishing restaurants. In 2007 someone bought the 3 restaurants, built it up to 10 restaurants in the salt lake city and surrounding area. In 2013 the owner submitted franchise documants and began franchising. The Atlanta area franchise was established in 2014 and the franchisee will grow this restaurant in the Atlanta and surrounding area. Beside Utah there are currently restaurants in L.A. California, Kennesaw GA, and Destin FL.

Business Owner

Born and Raised in Bountiful UT, Mike Ellsworth was raised in a family of 4 kids. At age 14 he moved to Burke VA where he went to High School. After a mission for his church in 1990 he attended the University of Utah where he studied Pre-​Med; Human Biology. With that he a was accepted into Emory University’s Anesthesiologist Assistant program. He graduated with his Masters in Medical Science in 2001 and accepted a Scottish Rite Childrens hospital as an Anesthetist. Mike always had a business itch. For the last 10 years he owned a Real Estate company, Home Theater Dudes (a home theater company), and now is a franchisee of Barbacoa Mexican Grill.

Not bad, not great… as many others have mentioned it was completely empty when I went in, I was literally the only customer. Two very nice young ladies assisted me with a no meat burrito. The ingredients were a bit limiting, but I was still able to create a veggie option. I wish them the best, but they need a bit more «life» in the restaurant … fun music, better weekday specials, etc

Restaurant was very clean but empty. We got the children’s quesadilla, barbacoa pork burrito, and grilled chicken burrito bowl. Staff was friendly.
My wife loved the barbacoa pork burrito. The children’s quesadilla was steamed which seems like a strange choice. It came out really mushy. I got the burrito bowl. The chicken and guacamole was good. Unfortunately the brown rice was under cooked and crunchy. Also no chips or salsa.

Took a long time to get served. There were a lot of customers and only one person on the line.
I had the barbacoa beef burrito. It wasn’t quite what I expected in flavor, but it was okay. The prices are okay, but veggies should be covered for the price of the barbacoa beef. People shouldn’t have to pay extra for that. Customer service was decent. Restaurant is spacious with plenty of tables and a TV for guests. Bathrooms were clean. The location is easy to get to and there’s ample parking for everyone.

First impression: wow very empty. But it is a Monday night! Very nice, clean and modern facility. I got a burrito bowl and my boyfriend got the burrito. Rice seemed like it was sticky, but if they’re slow I can understand why, not complaining about it. I see it as better than wasting and throwing it away, still tastes great!
I got the honey sweet pork and two-​thumbs up!!! Amazing! Boyfriend said that his burrito was great as well! Also the cheese dip is a must try, incredibly yummy.
Service: two teens that clearly don’t want to be there, very slow, but friendly.
Burrito bowl 6.99, burrito 6.99, cheese dip $ 4 (I think) would go again, but this isn’t cheaper than Moes.

We walked into a the place and it felt like walking into an abandoned building. With only 2 patrons and 2 people working you could hear a pin drop. Keep in mind it was prime dinner time. The 2 employees were less than enthusiastic to help and didn’t appear to want to be bothered.
On to my chicken burrito. The only thing I can say about it is my sodium intake was pushing dangerous levels. I couldn’t finish it. My wife got the beef barbacoa which actually tasted pretty good. The other plus side is that the beer was cold.
I’m sticking to chipotle #1 and moe’s a close #2. I might take this over willy’s. I’d also recommend more salsa and hot sauce choices.

A groupon brought us here but we will definitely be back. Nice and friendly atmosphere. We got the burrito bowls which I would say are the best value. Everything is fresh delicious and healthy. Great for vegans, vegetarians, and meat eaters alike. They serve beer on tap too which is nice.

Keep in mind that I this is my first experience and I haven’t eaten the food just yet. I ordered to go. When I walked in the spot appeared to be completely empty, which is red flag #1. Then I notice in the corner an employee was sleep in one of the booths. Not sure if you pay her to sleep or if she was on break…
It still took a couple of minutes for an employee to come out from the back. She was really courteous but my level of annoyance is already at an 8. Do better at being professional. The only reason I decided to order food is because of the 50% Scout Mob deal so you guys owe them a big thank you.

I found this restaurant thanks to Groupon and I’m so glad I did! This restaurant is set like Chipotle, but their food tastes so much better and their staff is amazing. Their queso is thick and creamy, guacamole tastes fresh and deli shush and I love all the meat choices. For $ 20 we were able to each get a HUGE burrito, chips and salsa, and a side of queso. I’ve been here twice and will continue to be a repeat customer!

This place is similar to Chipotle but they are a little cheaper and they offer more meat choices.
I got the pork barbacoa salad and it was a good amount of food for the price.
Very friendly employees and they will let you try any of the meats.
My only complaint is that their «hot sauce» was not hot at all.
Next time I am up in the area I will be going back

Several different meats that all look good. I had the barbacoa pork and it was great! And just a little spicy.
Only problem I had with the entire place was the lack of enthusiasm from the employees. They seemed like they were just going thru the motions…

This place is right around the corner from me so I finally decided to give it a try the other night. When I got there I almost turned right around because it was empty and looked like it was closed. Somebody rushed to the counter and waved at me which prompted me to step inside. The server was really friendly and explained their menu to me. He even took the time to speak to my daughter about what she wanted. I settled on the barbacoa and the flavor was really delicious. However my burrito wasn’t very warm by the time I ate it. I took it home which is only five minutes away.

No Worries Chipotle, Willy’s, & Moe’s!!! This place has the same concept, but no love in the food!
My son and I came in to redeem our Groupon and was so disappointed. First off, it look like the place had been targeted, there looked to be milk or some type of white liquid that had dried up all over the front windows of the place, the person sweeping stated he saw it and didnt know exactly what it was.(???)
The place was practically empty with the exception of a family of five and two workers. We were greeted with friendly faces and waited on right away.
The food: I didn’t even finish my food, I ordered a bowl, I was really shocked to see them serving rice that was noticeably stuck together, the brown rice looked worst than the white so I went with the white lime rice, awful, just awful. Black beans, corn, salsa, and lettuce… and let me not for get the guacamole, he actually gave me two scoops of the browning guacamole. Lol. After struggling to pull the rice apart, I gave up and asked for a lid to take it to go.
My son ordered Nachos, he was surprised to see them add rice on them,(he could have said he didn’t want rice) but he actually liked the chicken, and the queso cheese even though it was a little thick, he also added lettuce. I understand it was a Sunday and maybe they did not want to pull out all the bells and whistles, but a word of advice: Do Better!

This place gives Chipotle and Willy’s reason to worry. Delicious burritos/​bowls and combining the Sweet Honey Pork with either barbacoa is a good decision any time.
Not to mention, because the line isn’t long, you can get your food in less than 5 minutes!

Appears to be a re-​do of Moe’s and Chipotle — but not as well done. These folks are new to the neighborhood, and perhaps they need more practice at it — but they’re not quite ready for prime time as of this visit (01⁄14). Paying extra for Guacamole is expected, but extra for a small basket of chips and half-​hearted salsa? Extra for a flour tortilla to go with a Burrito Bowl? C’mon, man…

I can’t say much because I haven’t eaten there yet, but I can tell you I wasn’t impressed. First off, it’s a West Coast-​based chain, and I didn’t see anything different than Willy’s and Moe’s. The place was dead when we arrived, and we looked over the menu and didn’t see anything intriguing: chicken, steak, or pork, BYO style with a salsa bar. The only major difference is they have a burrito soup.
One major downside: if you get a burrito bowl and still want the tortilla on the side, they charge you $ 0.85, whereas Moe’s and Willy’s just give it to you. It seems like a silly and unnecessary upcharge to me. My fiancé likes to get burrito bowls, eat half with the fresh tortilla chips, and make the other half into a smaller burrito for the next day’s lunch.
The guys behind the counter said the company sent out a bunch of coupons, and if they’re good ones, I bet we will be back to check it out.

Went for the first time last week and food was cold and overpriced. As for the flavor the onions in the salsa completely overpowering everything else in the burrito. Don’t waste your money or your time

I am updating my review as they were closed when I first reviewed them. Very similar to Chipotle. You can get a burrito, burrito bowl, salad, taco, nachos or soup with a variety of meat. $ 1 extra for beef. $ 1.49 for guacamole. For $ 1 more you can wrap your taco with a tortilla and cover it with cheese. Sounded yummy. Food seemed fresh. I got a honey BBQ pork burrito. Pretty good, but the sweet flavor was a bit too sweet. Might try the steak or barbacoa next time for $ 1 more.
