A quiet charm and grace The first library in Kennebunk was established back in 1881 and like most early libraries bounced around a bit. The books were stored in stores, above offices and just about any place that happened to be available at the time. Finally in 1907 a new building was constructed and the library finally got a home of it’s own. A pleasant if not grandiloquent building, the new library was just what Kennebunk needed and serve well for decades. Times change and the library became more and more antiquated and it became obvious that it needed some renovations and upgrades. So work began and in 1995 the new version of the Kennebunk Library was ready to be opened. The library retains it’s pleasant old features like wonderful art, lighting and furniture but now has all the amenities and useful features of a modern library. Everything is well organized, the librarians friendly and helpful and there are lots of programs available for both kids and adults. Not one of the huge, imposing and awe inspiring libraries that some towns have, the Kennebunk has a quiet charm and ambiance about it. A very cool place to spend some time on a cold winter’s day.
