Sween Optometry

I was in dire need of a re-​evaluation of my vision and I was long overdue for an annual check up. I’ve been going to the same ophthalmologist in Hawaii Kai for years but when we moved to west Oahu, Hawaii Kai seems like a world away. I still maintain that going to an ophthalmologist is my preferred choice for vision care but if you’re fairly healthy and no ongoing chronic issues with your vision, an optometrist would be ok.
Sween Optometry is located inside Costco in Kapolei. Dr. Sween is an independent physician not working for Costco but has an office inside by the optical department. I had called ahead to see if they were taking walk ins and was politely told that it would be better to make an appointment as there would be know way they could tell how soon I would get in that day since they already had scheduled appointments and a few walk ins already. No problem. An appointment was made and two weeks couldn’t come soon enough as I was truly struggling «seeing» with my old, prescribed lenses.
I love Dr. Sween! He’s a bit OCD like myself (detail oriented, prompt and thorough) but I certainly don’t mind that in an exam. It’s hilarious that he has the same sock fetish as I do (but that’s neither here or there). He’s personable and easy to talk to as well as very accommodating when it comes to explaining things in layman terms. He did some baseline pictures of the back of my eyes as well as give me a thorough eye exam and compared it with my existing, old prescription. Wallah! Quite a significant change in vision since my last exam (oh…some 4 – 5 years ago). No wonder I couldn’t see! Thanks to Dr. Sween, I can now change the font size on my cell phone to reflect my corrected vision. What a difference an updated and correct lens makes in vision! Dr. Sween’s office takes insurance and will bill them for your as a courtesy.
As a note, unlike many optometrist’s offices, he does not carry frames and/​or lenses for sale, instead you walk away with a prescription for lenses and/​or contacts and you can either fulfill that prescription at the Coscto Optical/​Vision counter (or your choice) where you can choose a new frame or have them replace the lenses on your existing frames.
Sween Optometry was a great find and we’ll definitely be coming back here for vision maintenance!

I have been going to Dr. Sween for a few years now, and he and his staff are excellent at providing exceptional customer service. I never wait very long for my appointment, the office is great with scheduling appointments. They also have a email scheduling option!
Dr. Sween is down to earth, very knowledgeable about the recent developments in eye care. I appreciate his consultation and will be going back for regular eye exams as long as he is on Island. Located in Costco Kapolei, you don’t have to be member to see him here…

I have consulted with Dr. Sween twice regarding prescription eyewear. I enjoy working with him in finding the most suitable Rx lenses because he is charming and knowledgeable. His office is not as busy as the other Costco optical departments on O’ahu. This makes the overall experience more enjoyable. If one has ever been to the Iwilei Costco, one will immediately know what this reviewer is referring to. On the flip side on the coin, his support staff leaves some room for improvement. For instance, when I called for an appointment, I spoke with Nadine, I believe. She was extremely helpful in explaining everything from parking to what to expect on appointment day. On appointment day, the assistant in black medical scrubs and academic-​looking glasses (Nadine, I believe) conducted some preliminary tests. She was again extremely helpful and an absolute pure joy to work with. However, the other assistant who sat behind the front desk threatened to spoil the entire experience. This latter assistant was rude (abruptly interrupting the health care conversation between Nadine and I); overbearing (trying too hard to control Nadine and the patient, myself, for some puzzling reason); and had difficulty communicating basic information – primarily due to the fact that she spoke in an unusually rushed manner and appeared to not listen carefully to what the patient was attempting to communicate. I do not know if this latter assistant’s personality issues were due to hormonal imbalances or stress or a combination of these or other factors, but her intensity and negative energy leaves this reviewer no alternative but to give the office an overall critique of 4 stars.

Excellent and careing Dr. Sween and his staff. My last appointment I should up at the wrong time and they did the best to fit me in for an exam within 30 minutes. Located in Costco and you do not have to be a Costco member to see the Doctors.

There’s a reason why there are so many 5-​stars for Dr. Sween Optometry. Even when they’re a little busy as the Kapolei Costco often is, I never have to wait more than a few minutes and everything runs smoothly by the Staff. Dr. Sween is by far the best Optometrist — he shares his knowledge and lets me know about new developments in eye care. His Staff is super caring and attentive. There is a sincerity among everyone in the office to help their patients and provide the best care possible. Even the «outside» eyeglass salespeople are personable and helpful. I highly recommend Dr. Sween Optometry for anyone who wants to be treated well.

The Dr. s and the staff are so friendly and knowledgeable. It’s also convenient that it’s in costco. This place is Definitely a must go to if u live in kapolei.

The office is super convenient because it’s inside Costco Kapolei so you can get everything done there. The staff are amazing! They never make you wait for more than 5 minutes. They’re super friendly, great customer service and know what they’re talking about.
One of the ladies was talking to me about my new insurance (which they don’t accept there. dang aetna) and that even though my insurance won’t cover my visit, the appointments aren’t too pricey for out of pocket services. Also, I could probably make a claim to my insurance and get some of the money back for the visits.
Then there’s Dr. Sween! He’s awesome! He takes his time with his patients and he makes sure that you have the right presciption that is suited for you. He even remembers you. Which is pretty good, considering he only sees you once a year! If you need an optometrist, Dr. Sween is your guy!
I honestly have no words to describe their level of professionalism!

The whole staff is professional, friendly and knowledgeable. I originally came here for myself, but now my whole family is coming to see Dr. Sween. He is great with my kids and they look forward to their visits every year. Highly recommend!

Very friendly, knowledgeable and accommodating staff. The office is clean and they use the most up to date technology. I’ve moved from the Kunia Costco to this office because of the staff.

The office is a little small, but the service is just wonderful. Doctor Sween and the staff are professional, friendly and knowledgeable, and they always return my phone calls promptly. Conveniently located in Costco Kapolei. We make the drive from Pearl City because it’s worth it. Would recommend to any friend.

Love this place! The staff is so friendly and accommodating. Dr. Sween is knowledgeable and efficient. He does not try to push any one product or brand. There is so pressure to go with contacts or glasses. Absolutely love it here and will make it my new place to go for vision.

Dr. Sween and the ladies at the front were so nice at my appointment today. I was in Costco for my normal shopping and noticed that they offer walk-​ins when available. I generally don’t bring my 19 month old with me to any appointments but I really needed an eye appointment so I figured I might as well give it a try, since eye appointments are short anyway. They were fantastic in accommodating not only myself but my little menace too! Not that I want to encourage bringing kids here because I personally would avoid it if possible, but it ended up going pretty well. They definitely have the aloha spirit at this office.

Dr. Christopher Sween and hi staff are VERY courteous and professional. My wife and I were seen by him recently and we like the service we both received. I most especially like the way he and his staff explained what procedures they were performing and why. Which made me comfortable. I highly recommend going there for eye exams.

This is my second annual visit. Love coming here. Dr. Michelle loui is so sweet &professional. She listen, to any concerns you have & answers them the best of her knowledge. The staffs are super friendly Naomi is the bomb. The new girl, Tabitha is awesome too. Happy I got my contacts so I can s@@

Dr. Sween is professional, courteous, and patient. Look no further for all your eye care needs! I strongly suggest making an appointment, especially for the fact that Dr. Sween keeps his appointments, I have never waited, thank you Dr. Sween!

Our family has been seeing Dr Sween for a few years now, he is great. We appreciate his patience, and professionalism. The office is run very smooth and efficient. The staff is very friendly and filled with aloha, just the way we like it.
Both of my children have now had visits with Dr Louie, who was just as wonderful as Dr Sween. I would recommend both of them to anyone. I also like that they themselves do not sell anything, so they aren’t pushing anything on you. The costs of the visits are the best prices that I know of if you do not have any insurance.
