Specialties

The West Wyandotte branch collection contains approximately 200,000 items: books for adults and kids, movies on DVD and VHS, music CDs, books on CD and playaway, and magazines and newspapers. The library also features a computer lab with printing capability and access to free wi-​fi. We offer a diverse range of programs including ESL classes, book clubs, movie screenings, and computer classes.

History

Established in 1963.

The first library in western Wyandotte County started in 1963 and was housed in the old Hornif School site at 98th Street and State Avenue. It was transferred to the Wyandotte Plaza Shopping Center at 82nd Street and State Avenue in 1971. It became the busiest branch in the Kansas City, KS Public Library system and soon expanded into adjacent storefronts in 1975 and 1978. Planning for a new facility began in 1982 and the current library building was dedicated to the public on June 1, 1986 after nearly twenty months of construction.

This is my favorite library in Kansas City, KS. The staff is always super helpful. The children’s library is decorated nicely and always very encouraging to helping kids read. They usually have some activity going on there that’s interesting such as ACT testing. I always feel safe here.
Recently they had a fine amnesty where they were waiving fees if you brought in things to donate for homeless teens. I think that’s awesome.
They have a good section of music and DVDs. I certainly appreciate the fact that you can put the books on hold and they’ll have them pulled for you. They used to hold them behind the desk but they now have a spot by the self check out so you can do it yourself.
They put the new books in a section up at the front so you can easily go through them. They also have a section for Young Adult readers that has a lot of good books. I love the fact that they separated them out from the kids. They have a few chairs to lounge in right by that area to encourage the kids to get lost in a book. I really appreciate it.
They usually have a trivia question up at the front desk. I’ve never gotten it right lol but I love that they put it up there.
It’s a really solid spot. I appreciate it a lot.

This is a nice library. They have a good selection of movies (Blu ray and DVD) and TV shows. You can only check out a certain number of different kinds of shows and movies at a time, but that’s usually all you can watch in one week anyway. My only complaint would be the WiFi there is terrible.

I was about 10 or 11 when this branch opened many, many years ago. It is still the best library in the system! Two levels and little coves make quiet reading or studying easy. A vast selection of not only books, but a great multimedia section. They even have a local artists section! Try it out next time you need a book!
