Fantastic gym. I’ve been going to Scott Fitness/​TheGymKC off an on for over three years, and I’m happy as can be.
The midtown location is really close to where I live and work, so I usually come by about 4 to 6 days a week.
Project Poolside is my favorite class because it’s challenging but not quite as scary as some of the others (boxing, I’m looking at you!). I got pretty good at improving my technique and strength by doing that class twice a week.
I would give my rating 5 stars if they would provide yoga/​pilates classes that aren’t insanely hard. I can’t even begin to attend these classes regularly because there is too big a step between my current fitness level and the physical demands of these classes. Let’s get a beginners class, eh?
Final thought: My god, there are some beautiful people who go to this gym. Everybody minds their own business, but there’s still something about a tattooed bearded man who is workin’ on his fitness that gives me that extra push on the elliptical.

TheGymKc has it all! Nice, new equipment, great classes and great trainers. You can go anytime. People are there just to workout. No people putzing-​around trying to be glamorous. Just get in, get a great workout, get out! What’s not to love about this place? I sure love it!

Not a fancy gym by any means, but just what ya need. Always clean, machines work, secure entrance, 24 hours. It also just got a fresh coat of paint and new lockers.

This location doesn’t give me an excuse to not workout after work, because it is literally a minute or two away from KUMED.
With that being said, it is definitely convenient to have this gym on the way home especially after long 12 hour night shifts, it’s nice to not drive too far away to get my sweat on.
I go to this location and the one in the rivermarket. Both have their pros and cons, but I like the equipment here better, but the ambiance better in the other. This place is the best after my night shifts, because how bright it is with all the open windows and flourescent lights that illuminate the whole place. Definitely wakes me up!
I usually go to this location around 8−9am and it’s a perfect time to go, since there aren’t too many people working out at this time. The place usually gets pretty busy by the time I leave around 9:30 to 10am.
I love how there are no contracts for joining this gym. My favorite part is that it’s open 24 hours and that it has great security! (they have a hand security track pad that also requires a personalized security code to get in)
They just added new treadmills, which I was very happy on running on. There are handles that have controls over the speed and the angle you want to run at. The place is kept pretty clean and it’s nice to see everyone adhering to keeping the place clean.
I’m by no means a very athletic person nor do I look like the son of Adonis, so I love how chill this gym is. It’s not like other places where I feel insecure about how I exercise. The gym is meant to get you pumped and focused on bettering yourself… not looking around and feeling bad about yourself.
It’s not the best looking place, but for the cheap membership with no contracts, it’s definitely a steal. Plus I would rather go here than to a nicer looking facility that has a bunch of self conceited meat heads. lol
I give this place 4 stars, simply for the lack of convenient class times for me. I’d love to go to a class, but since I work night shifts, it’s hard to find the right time for me to go. Oh ya… they also need to get bigger lockers. They only have tiny ones right now, and I usually have to leave my backpack in my car before I head in.

I will say they are a great gym for being in the heart of a major city! The atmosphere is great. FREE classes of all types… Boxing and bootcamp and whatevers. Their free weight side is not organized very well. But it works. They have a lot of open area to do lunges and plyo work.
They have boxing and kickboxing bags… FYI… If youre kicking and dropping bombs on the body bag and think youre tough because its flying around… STOP.
The clientele is a mix of women and active men… A few meatheads, but few and far in-​between. Actually… I would consider myself a meathead relative to the rest of the clientele.
I do not see a lot of flirting or guys hitting on girls. No guys just there all day trying to look pumped for the chicks. People come in… Do their business and get out!
The employees are very friendly. We had a situation with one of the workers who contacted a female friend unsolicited. We emailed the owner and she informed us he was already let go and she was going to send legal notice to him. She took it very seriously and was very professional. This is very comforting to all you females who are looking for a gym who you can trust and be comfortable in.
Busy times are usually around the classes…
8−9am and it is PACKED between 5 – 7 and sometimes till 8pm. So be aware.
Can we get a lying hamstring curl machine here?!

This was my first gym to join and I doubt that I will find better, especially in the KC area. The fact that it’s open 24 hours was one of my first reasons to join, and for just a little over 40 bucks a month and access to all 3 locations, and no contracts to sign I couldn’t pass it up. I started working out there on my own and eventually got a personal trainer (see their full list of trainers on the website) who taught me that there is so much more than running on a treadmill or elliptical at a gym (PM me if you would like her name and are interested). I used the Uptown location the most since it was the closest and I thought the layout was better Crossroads, but I liked the people at Crossroads better — so it balanced out. Never went to Rivermarket cause it was out of the way but heard good things about it. There are a wide range of classes to choose from at each location. My favorites were Zumba, Pilates and Yoga. The bike class looked like a lot of fun but I never got to try it due to time. There is also free wifi at each location — why is this important? I mean shouldn’t you be working out and not checking FB? Very true if you’re lifting or taking a class but hitting the stairmaster for 30 minutes while watching Netflix shows was awesome. It’s the only way I can do cardio on a machine now!
So with all this great stuff why not 5 stars? Uptown and Crossroad locations look a little run down. I’m not saying the equipment is run down, just the interior design. Hopefully there are plans to renovate (especially Uptown where the weight machines are — there is what looks like a tarp as a ceiling making it a poorly lit area). So if you can get over that or go to a different location I don’t think you’ll be let down.
Really sad I had to cancel my membership since I moved to Florida… lets just say I haven’t worked out as much since leaving.

Since moving to KC, I’m looking for a gym. I had a few people tell me how great this gym was, so I thought it was worth checking.
I must say, I’m not impressed. I was expecting this amazing place, but I was let down.
I do not understand paying $ 40 for what? It’s just a gym with a few classes.
When touring, the bathroom floor look like hadn’t been touched by a mop for a very long time. The front desk person (some guy with glasses) seemed to be put out to come show around.
So I found another gym to go too.

Great gym, great location.
I really like the non-​contract aspect of the gym and the free classes. I also like the option of taking classes that are SGPT. Yes, I have to pay a bit extra, but they are well worth it. You do get a bit more extra attention from the instructor than you do from the large free classes.
I’ve been going here for almost a year and really love it, the staff is great.

I thought I would update my review of the gym since quite some time has passed…
The place is more of a 5 star gym than ever. The facilities have been updated and improved a lot over the past several months and I have also had the opportunity to attend a few different classes offered.
Boxing class (particularly the Friday afternoon small group class) is awesome and provides an incredible full body workout. Not for the faint of heart!
I have only been able to attend a Pilates class a few times due to my schedule, but have learned some great moves that I can incorporate into any workout on my own. If more class times were offered I would surely be back regularly!
I finally made it to the Project Poolside class that is offered every week day at noon. I sprained my rotator cuff doing pushups in the last 15 minutes of the class but I learned so many versatile workout moves during that hour that it was worth it!
I’ve been coming here for nearly 5 years now and plan to continue going until I tear every muscle in my body!

I’d been a member of Scott Fitness/​TheGymKC for a long while now, but only recently worked out at the midtown location. I can easily see why it’s becoming a fan favorite, but I’m not sure if I’d give up the River Market location for it.
Just like the other locations, it has a hand-​scanner for entry and is open 24 hours. It has showers, cardio, and the typical weight equipment. There’s WiFi in the building, and plenty of space for classes and cardio.
Part of the place’s charm is that it utilizes the old department store /​mall that used to be there. There are still old signs up, and the doorways from the old businesses are there.
It’s also part of the drawback. It scores well in charm, but for utility, it’s kind of a minus — the seemingly randomly placed door ways make the place seem a little too maze-​like (and for newbies intimidated by the gym, that might be a turn-​off). The entrance is in the rear of the building, meaning it’s not visible from the street at all, and thus, a little hard to find. (I wouldn’t call it a safety issue, but it does present a unique challenge for folks who wouldn’t already know where it is.) And, given that it’s an old building… it’s awfully hard to keep cool in the hot Kansas City summers.
The thing is, though… TheGymKC is known for being a quirky alternative to the cookie cutter gyms from suburbia. It’s a gym for people who live in the heart of Kansas City and only go outside the city limits when they have to. Judged on that scale? It’s decent.

Of the three locations of theGYMkc, this is the one I visit the least. That’s only due to geography, however. If I lived in this hood, I’d gladly visit the Uptown location.
It should be known, this is probably the least funky of the three gyms. It’s pretty straightforward, which I like. The cardio equipment is organized well, not as crammed in as the other locations. Nothing to obstruct your view of the TVs, which I appreciate.
The class space is frickin huge! If I was going to be a glutton for punishment and do something like Project Poolside, this would be where I’d want to do it. Plus, they just added a ton of new fans, so it’s always breezy in this part of the gym. In the weight areas? Not so much. How about some more fans, people?
Speaking of the weight areas, I’m still wrapping my head around them. It’s not the organization I would have gone with, but I’m also a creature of habit, bordering on OCD. I’m sure that eventually I’ll get a rhythm down at this location. The important thing is, they have plenty of equipment and once again, there is plenty of space to use it.
This location probably has the best bathrooms of all of them, as well. That’s because they are the closest to traditional locker rooms. No more waiting around for somebody else to shower before you can go pee. Thank god.
These gyms aren’t for everyone, but f you’re into the general vibe and attitude of TheGYMkc you’ll be absolutely satisfied with this location.

I’ve been a member of Scott Fitness for about six months; this is the location that’s a block from my house, so it’s the one I use the most.
God in heaven, I adore this gym. I love how inexpensive it is; I love that there’s no contract; I love that it’s open 24 hours a day; and I love the vibe. It’s always populated by people who seem like they would be cool to have a beer with. How many gyms are like that?
I never have to wait for a machine and if the music is sometimes lame, at least it’s never too loud.
The classes are glorious — Project Poolside deserves the gym class equivalent of an Academy Award, and ⁵⁰⁄₅₀ is pretty great, too. I wish this location had more classes (and more WEEKEND classes in particular!).
I have only one complaint — I do wish there were lockers. I know that’s a whole other nightmare of a management headache, but it would be nice to have someplace secure to stash our stuff, particularly in the winter when coats are all over the place.

This was the best place I could have ever chosen to start getting in shape. The locations are open 24 hours and are located across the midtown, west side, and river market areas. Each gym attracts a different crowd, so try them all and see whats right for you. I love Scott fitness because it is a place for everyone, So no matter how in or out of shape you are, this place is a comfortable one to be sweating it out at. The uptown location has tons of room so i never feel crowded by anyone else working out. It has duplicate machines and weight setups so you can always find your own spot to get to it. The machines are mismatched sets but it mirrors the rag tag, tattooed, hipster, and everyone in-​between clientele. This is a come one come all place and i suggest visiting the website to see what the Scott fitness philosophy is all about. O yes, and you have to try a project poolside class, just don’t pass out or puke on anyone. Let the sore muscles begin!

I love this gym! A year ago, I quit smoking and decided to get serious about getting in shape. Problem was… I had never exercised before. Ok, so required gym classes in school, but that’s it. I needed a gym that wasn’t full of the stereotypical weightlifters and sculpted barbie women in spandex. I love that Scott Fitness’ business model is service based, not sales based. John Scott, one of the owners, is always visible at the 3 locations and is super nice! The trainers available are knowledgeable and patient and kind, and have your best interests in mind. The classes are great, but I do wish they offered more classes on the weekend or in the evenings. It would also be nice to have a pool, but the membership fees are very low compared to some other area facilities. I’m so glad I joined this gym! I would recommend it to anyone regardless of their fitness level!

You have to love this gym and the other gyms that are in the Scott Fitness family. Very large open gym with good machines and lots of free weights. $ 40 bucks a month and no contract, I’m in.

I had never belonged to a gym and about eight months ago a friend talked me into attending one of the project poolside classes. Now I am not athletic you could say I am the anti-​athlete, no coordination, a little lazy when it comes to exercising, etc. I went to the class and had never been so sore in my life, I immediately joined and now try to attend the class three times a week. There are several locations though out KC, the outskirts of Westport, Downtown/​River Market by the Uptown and the crossroads, they all have great artwork and a nice laid back vibe. The perfect place for the anti-​athlete. If you are looking for a low key, none meathead, unpretentious gym this is your place.

I have been going to Scott Fitness for almost a year. I needed motivation in the beginning so I started going to almost all the classes.
One of my favorites is the pilates and project poolside classes. This location just recently started doing a boxing class which I can’t wait to try. I found some really awesome pink gloves online and I need a reason to buy them :)
There is no sign up fees and there is no cancellation fees. You can start and cancel your membership at anytime. Also, if you sign up with someone else you get a discounted price.
Only one thing that is weird is the music selection they have. So bring an ipod so you don’t have to listen to the outer space music.
