Had an amazing first time experience. They really went the extra mile with my lunch. It was also the biggest and tastiest sub i’ve ever had. «Queen» on the way. :)

What a great little find! My beau, who is working near 17th& Washington found out about this place from some coworkers, so good information and a little spontaneity got us there. Great good and friendly service made us repeat customers. Sylvia’s Deli has everything you could want in a lunch spot. Excellent Italian style sub sandwiches(with a yummy special sauce), Reuben’s, daily homemade soup and daily warm plate specials. Great sides like good old fashioned pea, potato or pasta salad and AMAZING pies and desserts. Sylvia and her husband are always there to greet you and take your order. They remember your name and they are truly thankful for your business. Heck, during the Christmas season twenty customers win a gift that Sylvia shops for herself! She’s been doing it for ten years. Walking into Sylvia’s makes you forget for a minutes that you are in the busy hub bub of downtown and more like you are in your hometown corner deli.

Lunch quest part duex: Searched for sandwiches on the Unilocal!App and found Sylvia’s! As I walked in it appeared to be taco Tuesday(specials on all of their Mexican food). But I was in search of a sandwich so held true to my guns and ordered the Lil Sylvia(turkey with lettuce, tomato, mustard, banana peppers, oregano on marble rye.). The sandwich was solid and I would order it again. But what shines at Sylvia’s is their staff. The young lady who took my order told me that I made an excellent choice because she invented this sandwich and then the lady that checked me out(my guess is that she was Sylvia?) asked if I had ever been there before I told her no and she said that she didn’t recognize me so she didn’t think I had either. Now that may not seem like much, but for some reason I really believed her because everyone that walked up to pay she knew their name. I will make my way back here again and see if she remembers me oh and maybe try the tacos!

My friend and I stopped at Sylvia’s Deli on our way to a friend’s house. We are both out of towners and stopped at Sylvia’s because of Unilocal. We arrived at 1:30 and were greeted so warmly. They knew we were new to the café and chatted with us about our visit to Kansas City. We had the special, a Reuben sandwich, and it was delicious. We took 3 desserts to go – chocolate cream pie, blackberry pie and pistachio cake. All were home cooked and unbelievably delicious. Sylvia’s is close to the Kauffman Center, so it is a good place to stop for lunch prior to a concert. When we left, Sylvia’s husband made sure we knew how to get back on 35S to get to our friend’s house. We will definitely stop at Sylvia’s whenever we are in Kansas City.

I had planned on going elsewhere for lunch, but after getting blocked by traffic and having to go around the block I noticed Sylvia’s and decided it was fate for me to eat here. Tuesday’s specials are many different Mexican options. I will be back to try them, but being I was having Mexican for dinner, I wanted something light for lunch. The regular menu was kind of hard to see, but that may have been in part to me not following the ordering line(there was no line when I got there.) I asked if they had a BLT and they told me no but would make me one. Win!!! I also ordered some watermelon and cottage cheese to go with my sandwich. The sides made me super happy as I am always looking for a variety of healthier sides outside of salads. The sandwich was really good. The perfect ratio of bacon, lettuce, and tomato. I ordered my sandwich on wheat bread. The bread wasn’t toasted which would have been preferred, but being they don’t have BLT’s and made this special, I can’t complain about the bread not being toasted. The bread was really good quality. Very soft and fluffy. At first I thought it would be too thick, but with it not being a dense bread it was perfect. The bacon had great flavor. Defiantly a better quality bacon. The lettuce and tomatoes were fresh and yummy. My sides were also just right. The watermelon was the perfect ripeness and packed with flavor. The cottage cheese a standard small curd. I downed a huge cup of the homemade cherry lemonade which was fantastic. Not too tart, not too sweet, just right. If I was just rating on the food I would give them a solid four stars. When I put the entire experience together though, I wish I could give more than five stars. The service is just amazing. Offering to make what I wanted outside of the menu was just the start. The lady at the register, I believe Sylvia, was great at small talk, probably the second happiest worker after the lady at Habashi House, it would be a tight contest between the two! She recognizes her customers, calling them by name, knowing their order, even recognizing someone not getting their regular. She took time to look at my name on my card when I was paying and use it. I would feel confident if I went back tomorrow she would recognize me and know my name. This place is a must stop, quality food and exceptional service. One of the best local businesses in the metro!

After being a downtown resident for almost a decade, being an avid Unilocaler for 5 years and rounding the corner to two years as Unilocal Community Manager, it’s not often that a business slips under my radar. But when it does, and I learn about some hidden secret, it always makes my day. And when I learned about Sylvia’s, my day was most definitely made. I’ll be moving a few blocks from this deli in the coming weeks, and I’ve been trying to do my homework to learn about my nearby walkable options. Somebody then told me that I had to try the burritos at Sylvia’s. Say the word«burrito» and you don’t have to twist my arm too hard. I was off! First thing I noticed? The staff here is just incredibly friendly. Every single person that was there was just nice as pie, and I can’t wait to become a regular. There’s even somebody there actually named Sylvia! The deli itself seems clean and if it weren’t 15 minutes before their closing I would have dined in. Instead I took my food to go and enjoyed my burrito at home. So what’s on the menu? A variety of sandwiches and then Mexican staples. I opted for their burrito spread, stuffed with pork. It was a perfectly sized portion, and I liked the sauce that came on top. I look forward to checking out the rest of their Mexican fare, but it also seems that they do a lot of business selling sandwiches. They also have a variety of sides and desserts, so they’ve pretty much got lunch covered. Oh, and there are breakfast burritos, which are scientifically proven to be the best food invention of all time. I don’t think Sylvia’s is any sort of culinary crown jewell, but they offer a solid product in a clean environment, served by a personable staff. Sounds like I’ve got at least one lunch option to enjoy for many visits to come.

Sylvia’s Deli is one of the friendliest places in town! Sylvia herself greets each customer by name and if she doesn’t know you, she will introduce herself to you and welcome you to her establishment. The regular menu has a nice selection of sandwiches on it, ranging from deli subs to wraps to PB&J. I haven’t had a bad sandwich yet! The rotating daily specials are good and offer some variety if you eat here on a regular basis. So far Taco Tuesday is my handsdown favorite. Great prices and its more than just tacos! Burritos, tamales, enchiladas, yum! Oh and the beans, THEBEANS are fantastic, out of this world good. I haven’t had the cheesecake yet, but a co-worker told me it was the thickest cheesecake he’s ever had. Sylvia’s also has a few breakfast items on the menu, but I haven’t had a chance to try them yet. Oh and if you’re an Elvis fan then you will really dig this place, Sylvia is a huge Elvis fan and she has posters and memorabilia all over the restaurant.

More than anything in the world I love a good deli so I was quite excited to stumble upon Sylvia’s on my way to the Sprint Center. I ordered a sandwich, I believe the Juliano, that was CHOCKFULL of meat. It was an Italian-type sandwich served on a Roma bakery hoagie with lettuce and tomato. The sandwich was absolutely delicious, and the counter help was SUPER helpful, FRIENDLY and fast. I don’t know that the sides were homemade, they didn’t look like it and the one I got, the pasta salad, didn’t seem to be. My pasta salad was overrun with dressing. I believe, in addition to the pasta salad, I also saw potato salad. The chips were tucked out of the way and I didn’t notice them until after I ordered my meal. There was a huge variety of pies. The pies were all ordered in, I tried the pecan but there wasn’t anything special about it. It might as well have come from Price Chopper. It wasn’t bad, just disappointing. I wish Sylvia offered one or two pies that she made in house. I didn’t hate my experience at Sylvia’s — the sandwich and the friendly staff saved it for me. I wish the restaurant offered more homemade food. Will I go back? I’m up in the air on it.

Always friendly and kind. Had the ham-and-bean soup today. Tasty, although awfully salty.

I’ve been eating lunch here occasionally for a couple of years, and everything is always clean, neat and cheery. Nobody’s ever in a bad mood, and the food is wonderful. I love the Juliano sandwich. They also make pies and cakes and I bring some back to a couple of very appreciative folks I work with. I’ve never had the luch specials, but everone who has says they’re great, too. On top of all that, Sylvia’s story is very touching as well.

I had a bologna sandwich from Sylvia’s today for lunch and it was one of the best sandwiches I’ve ever ate. I don’t eat bologna often. Today I was in the mood for something outside of the usual turkey, ham or roast beef selection. I asked for all the usual toppings(tomato, onion, lettuce, cheese, mayo, mustard) on marble rye. The meat was shaved thin and stacked high. It was everything a deli sandwich should be. Delish. The service was fast and Sylvia herself was running the register. I was lucky to beat the lunch rush by about 2 minutes. I’m definitely going back around 11:45 next time. I can’t recall the last time a bologna sandwich made my day. I never realized it was possible. Thank you Sylvia’s!

Whew. We ordered in from this place during tax season. Bread was stale, meat was bologna(literally), pasta salad had no taste and brownies were kind of tough. I mean, how do you screw up sandwiches? Honestly.

I heard this place has good sugar-free pies(voted on in the Pitch), and if I remember right, I got some good, cheap mexican food there. And perhaps a nice traditional ameri-mex breakfast. At any rate, it’s a nice addition to an early-adopter-part-of-town(west of the getting-gentrified crossroads).
