Christopher Elbow Artisanal Chocolates

I was expecting very pretty chocolates that put the look before the taste. What I found was very pretty chocolates that also taste amazing and unique — flavor combos you will never find elsewhere. Like whiskey, earl grey tea, lime vanilla, and yuzu (a juniper-​like Japanese citrus that makes the chocolate taste like a gin martini). Very nice lady working there and a good excuse to go to the Crossroads.

Stopped in here as was visiting KC Wineworks next door, and hubby had never been inside before. I have had their chocolates, usually buy them at Dean & Deluca. We each got a pâté de fruit, one blueberry and one strawberry. Frankly tasted like a sugary fruit strip. Not worth it, but that’s just me. I also had a hazelnut patty, it was good, but not mind-​blowing, tasted like a good-​quality Ferrero Rocher. Hubby had a chocolate, said it was amazing as usual. Interested in trying their super dark bars with PT’s coffee, and will be back for the fleur de sel and spice caramels. If it had been cooler outside I would have had a coffee from their on site espresso machine. I will also continue to get their amazing, gorgeous chocolates, which are the best I’ve ever had. Strawberry balsamic, the champagne and the rosemary are beyond killer.

Seriously, if you live in Kansas City, call yourself a chocolate lover and have never been here, you need to unlove chocolate or move away. This is the one and only place you should even consider buying handmade, homemade and hand designed chocolate from. There isn’t any one flavor that beats another or one piece that outshines the other!
If your visiting Kansas City, and you’re only considering you MIGHT wanna stop by, do NOT be a fool and let yourself or anyone else change your mind! Come here, buy some candy, meet the staff who are awesomeness in themselves.
You will walk away a better human being and then, only then, have the right to call yourself a chocolate lover.

The chocolates are divine and the hot chocolate, or «drinking chocolate» is the only one of its kind that I’m aware of in KC… Or in the Midwest! If you’ve been to Europe you know what I’m talking about. The hot chocolate is not that watered down powdery mix– no, it is way more rich and chocolatey. The only other time I’ve had it was in Russia so I was pleasantly surprised when I walked into Christopher Elbow and see their sign for drinking chocolate!
On top of making deliciously rich drinking chocolate (about $ 4), they also have homemade marshmallows, whipped cream, and a variety of exotic flavors that can be added. I opted for the marshmallows and the whipped cream and it was sooooo good. I highly recommend trying the drinking chocolate if you’ve never experienced it before or if you want to be transported back to Europe!
The chocolates are beautifully crafted and there is a wide variety of tempting flavors. The fleur de sel caramel is the most popular and it is exquisite! I was lucky enough to be gifted a box set of ten and they were all winners!
Also, once you’ve had the chocolates, you need to try the Christopher Elbow Chocolate ice cream at Glacé!

Finally got to give this place a try! Heard so many good things. It’s chocolate! You can’t go wrong right? om nom nom!
Got the Cocoa Noir, and the 4 piece box set all for about $ 15– Pretty pricey, but the presentations went along with the price hahaha
The quality of the chocolate was pretty impressive. Very European esque– Just with the bitter sweet style in confiserie. Belgium style to be exact; that darker chocolate due to a higher cocoa content. Compared to the Swiss creamier milk chocolate style (aka Adre’s– if you’ve ever been).
As I’ve said it was a bit pricey $ 2/​truffle. The 4 piece box set was $ 10, you’re paying $ 2 more for he fancy box. I wasn’t kidding, but they do take the time to neatly place each piece into the box and tie a nice bow… Oh and the bag is fancy too! lol So you paid extra for the box and the bag! WHATEVER! It’s worth it!
Note: It’s best to buy them individually. I heard it’s $ 1 on first fridays, but don’t quote me on that.
I got the: Banana Foster, Venezuelan Spice, Champagne, and Coconut Caramel.
The Cocoa Noir was soooooooo good! You can definitely taste the European style dark hot chocolate. It’s not over bearing in bitterness. Very well balanced. The housemade marshmallows where a plus!
Gentlemen/​Ladies/​My future gf if you ever read this– if you are in the doghouse this is a gift that will get you out from sleeping on the couch… After that you better apologize like CRAZY!
But worth a gift to give to someone special… or if you want to treat yoh self then by all means get some chocolate, stop by the Rat Cellar for a bottle of wine and you are golden! LOL

I was first drawn to Christopher Elbow chocolates years ago when they were only sold at Halls. They were so pretty and eye catching… and delicious. They are the easiest way to make my mom happy on just about every holiday. She especially loves the champagne chocolates. They sometimes have a wine one that i love. The whiskey one was very good too.

Amazing, simple amazing. Each new flavor you try will be your next favorite. You cannot go wrong with any them. I’ve even tried their mint hot cocoa and sugar candies which were both amazing. I’m going back this weekend. The staff is super friendly.

I bought my dad a box of chocolates (he loves chocolate) and Glacé coffee ice cream for his birthday. My dad, mom and I all thought the chocolates were beautiful, but not exceptional in taste. Not bad, but not unforgettable. For the price, I was expecting better. Honestly, I think Donckels Truffles/​Ferrero Rocher/​Toblerone chocolate taste better. We didn’t love the coffee ice cream either. My dad said he prefers Haagen-​Dazs coffee ice cream and I have to agree. The guy at the counter was very nice, friendly and helpful but I was very disappointed considering how much I spent on the box of chocolates and ice cream :(I think this would be a nice, unique gift for someone who enjoys food art, but if you’re shooting more for the yumminess factor, I’d go with another option. Sorry :(

The best artisanal chocolates. Pricing isn’t terrible, either, but that may be because I walked into a Brooklyn chocolate shop last week. I love the tiny squares. Try everything.

Every time I visit Kansas City, I have to stop here and pick up some chocolates! Even my friends know, when they see me checking into Kansas City to txt me their chocolate order. This time I tried their drinking chocolate, amazeballs! Everyone should try this, if you are a chocolate lover like me :) I love how they change up their flavors depending on the season, I get to try that many more flavors! Definitely check this place out, great gift for yourself or loved ones, or friends!

Always a wow trying to select these beautiful chocolates, I dragged Eric R. here as my first stop in KC this past weekend upon hearing that yuzu is a seasonal flavor. Ordering online does not allow me to select flavors. Rather than chance an order to get a random assortment, I had to come here myself! I even stopped at Dean and Deluca yesterday and yuzu was not there.
We got in a growing line Saturday morning just after opening time. Eric R. and I agreed that getting chocolates for our mothers would be a great gift (his parents’ anniversary is this week and my mom’s birthday is next week). We are able to hand deliver our gifts to them so this would be perfect… they both love chocolate!
While I was there, I certainly had to get myself a box! I opted to get three 9-​piece boxes. The artisan behind the counter dragged my three boxes down as I selected different flavors for each box based on what we thought our moms would like and then I got what I wanted. I think I could have gotten myself a 16-​piece box! I ended up getting two additional yuzu chocolates for myself in a bag besides the one in my box. I considered some flavors that Eric R. might like in my box, and a few for my dad in my mom’s box.
Eric R. also ordered a peppermint «liquid chocolate» drink to try. He drank his warm drink in the seating area while I nibbled on a yuzu chocolate. entering a heavenly bliss that can only be equivalent to when I stayed at a ryokan called Yuzuya in Kyoto (yes, there are places for crazy people like me to stay on vacation that are all about one fruit).
I cannot wait to share the chocolate love and return here for more chocolates. There is a holiday flavor sampler that looked so good but those flavors were not for sale individually (like gingerbread) so I skipped that for now. There is always next time!

How can you not LOVE a great chocolatier? The décor is sleek and modern. Toward the back of the restaurant, there is a glass wall so you can see into the production facilities, which I found really interesting.
I was offered a sample of the raspberry truffle. The flavor of the raspberry complimented the dark chocolate beautifully. I ended up purchasing six additional truffles… I’ve tried the banana foster truffle and it didn’t disappoint. I can’t wait to try the others.
The chocolate is a bit expensive, but that is to be expected with good chocolates. The truffles are $ 2 each. I haven’t tried their other products, but they offer a variety of other products.
If you love a good dark chocolate, Christopher Elbow is a must… You won’t regret it.

Definately one of the best chocolate store in the states. It has the right amount of sweet and cacao. Christopher Elbow’s high quality chocolate taste very much like european chocolate and the delicate filling inside are waiting to melt-​in-​your-​mouth. Each of the bon bon is a piece of equisite artwork as it is uniquely defined by the filling inside. The chocolate isn’t rich and overwhelmly sweet as our Kansas City’s Russell Stover’s but it is worth spending the extra dollars for something that taste light.
The staff are super friendly and patient even when there are lines out the door. They can knock out the lines in less than 10 minutes and it is worth waiting!
I usually get the $ 20 giftbox that contains 9 bon bons for a friend’s birthday and purchase a few pieces of bon bons for myself for $ 2 each. The chocolate pairs well with a nice glass of your favorite red wine.

What an incredible treasure KC has in Christopher Elbow. When you want to send something, fun & unusual that looks incredible and tastes divine, there is no need to look any further. I had admired the CE chocolates for years, but just didn’t think I could bring myself to eat something that looked so much like art. Finally, my fiancé bought me a box for Valentine’s Day and, well, it would’ve been rude not to eat them, right?. I prefer the non-​fruity kind, but certainly wouldn’t suggest the fruit ones are lacking ~ just not my preference.

Incredible confectioners! Haven’t tried the chocolate as of yet but I have high hopes. Staff was very knowledgable which I can most definitely appreciate also.

I received an e-​gift certificate from a friend and went in to the store to use it. I had my chocolates boxed up and was ready to pay and they told me the gift certificate was meant for online purchases only, but they went ahead and honored it. Great customer service! Free samples on the counter. Bathroom is beautiful but the sink is funky and hard to turn on. It took me awhile, and then I didn’t know what I had done and couldn’t get it to turn off. The young woman behind the counter assured me the water would turn off, and that yes, the sink was funky and they would get it fixed. Good experience at their store!

I LOVE fine chocolates and always had been a fan of Leonidas ever since my first trip to Europe, but Christopher Elbow is now my favorite chocolate! As always, I got some passion fruit caramels, but also bought some chili spice hot chocolate mix as a gift for a friend and she LOVED IT! If you haven’t been there, you really need to go! The staff are very helpful and you will definitely find something that you’ll love!

Actually as good as it gets. Arrived the morning of the specified delivery date as fresh as ever. The quality is about the same as I remember when I was gifted some of his chocolates a few years ago, which is top-​notch. I will forever gift his chocolates to those I care about from now on. They are clearly made with equal parts love and professionalism.

Love it! The staff are all so friendly, and the chocolate is to die for. The hot chocolate with marshmallows is amazing. It’s like drinking liquid chocolate! I love the sea salt chocolate and the coffee chocolate… They have some exotic chocolate-​some have lavender, some are spicy, some are really vibrant in color. I’d recommend picking out your own assortment.

Dear Lord. Where do I start? It’s all been said before so I will save my typing finger from overload!
First: The most simple, classy space. Lovely.
Second: Professionalism to the core. A quiet sales associate calmly took my order, boxed them up while wearing gloves (of course!) and then meticulously dusted the box tops as to not leave a molecule of chocolate dust anywhere on the pristine white lid. Wow.
Third: You can see the action before your eyes! Very cool viewing.
Fourth: I still have my chocolates from this morning. I’m slightly terrified of eating these little pieces of art! But not to fear. I will happen within the hour!

A uniquely delish Kansas City experience. I scan my memory looking for a moment I’ve ever tasted something that was visually just as incredible. Nope.
I’ve been to other cities and their speciality chocolate shops. If their any good they have Elbow, and I usually get it because I know I can trust it will be great.
The downtown location is simple design modern, all focus is on the chocolate. A clean white counter with
glass square trays featuring the individual flavors. Traditional, their own creations and seasonal. It’s hard to believe at times that something so small can deliver with such intensity.
At first it’s hard to not balk at the prices. $ 2 for something no bigger than a quarter and if you only try it once it will be hard to eat the waxy cheap stuff there after. For those who need quantity the drinking chocolate at $ 4 a cup seems to settle the balker down.
If I go on a weekday parking is good, even before mothers day found a close one and no line… at all. First Friday of the month line is out the door but even than I don’t mind too much, especially if I’m with someone who loves chocolate the way I do, the anticipation, better than waiting in line at Disney land.

When I went to propose, I wanted to hide the ring in a box of chocolates because I am not very creative. That, and when I saw these chocolates on the Wirecutter, I knew I had to give them to Heather. I called CE to find out if it would be easy to put the ring in. They gave me all the details, and they also shipped it for delivery on a particular day at no charge. Super helpful.
The chocolates were stunning – I’ve never seen anything like them. Some of the flavors were stunning as well. I think my favorite was the lemon, which is surprising, because I usually go for the chocolatey ones. I did not like the lavender. Aesthetically, I think the banana one was the most impressive, but honestly, they were all beautiful. I was very happy with the choice and will definitely buy from them every time Heather and I get engaged (and maybe other times, too).

I love KC. This city supports so many local businesses just like Christopher Elbow and celebrates them!
I first encountered Christopher Elbow chocolates as a barista at the Roasterie Café in Brookside, but I’ve also seen their collaborations with Glacé gelato. It’s all on-​point.
On First Friday’s in KC’s Crossroads district, Christopher Elbow is open from 5−9pm and sells their chocolates for $ 1/​each (which is half-​price). They sell all the other stuff, too… like their AMAZING turtles, which sell for $ 3.
I waited in line for about 10 – 20 minutes, but the line seemed to move fairly quickly.
{I was with my brother which was nice because he could hole our place in line when I went to use the restroom, clean and fancy!}
The line got a lot longer as I waited there as more people arrived, so I’d suggest getting there as close to 5pm as possible. Though, keep in mind, summer in KC is hot and humid… and chocolates melt
I got four chocolates, which cost $ 4 even. I paid with cash, so no tax. They also take cards.
My brother wanted to just try one, so I got him a Fleur de Sel caramel (Caramel infused with Grey French sea salt), I tried a Coconut Almond (Almond marzipan topped with a white chocolate ganache), a Lime Vanilla (Fresh lime juice an vanilla bean blended into a buttery caramel), and a Venezuelan Dark (Dark chocolate ganache of 70% cacao from Venezuela).
They’re were all fantastic, as always. I’d expect nothing less from the chocolatiers at Christopher Elbow!

Wow wow wow. Amazing chocolates. My favorite is the peanut butter and jelly and passion fruit. However, no matter what you try… It’s all amazing. Also love the peanut butter hot chocolate. I need some now…

I come to this shop often and always on First Fridays. If you are coming on First Fridays, get there early. The line will be out the door. Sometimes they have grab bags, though, where you get 10 pieces for $ 5. $ 5! Granted, you don’t get to pick your pieces, but who cares! It’s all amazing.
If you are picking chocolate, just close your eyes and point. That is all you need to do. Or go to a shop that sells the boxed chocolates and try them all and then come in here and stockpile your favorites. Either way. Then get some drinking chocolate if it’s cold outside. Or even if it’s not. Still amazing.
The space is small and charming. Not your Mr. Bulkies. Think a Tiffany’s of chocolate. A Bloomingdales of chocolate. Classy. Understated. Beautiful. Bring your date here. Bring your Chicago friends here and they will finally understand that KC is a real city with a real chocolatier. Just come in here and experience it for yourself.

This place is like Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory for upscale, artisanal, fancy and creative creations. Holy cow. You’ll find these in coffee shops and specialty shops all over town, but there is a certain charm about the Crossroads shop.
I popped in to get a gift box and I literally could’ve eaten one of everything that they have to offer. There’s bananas foster, lavender caramel and whiskey aged maple just to name a few.
Christopher Elbow has absolutely dominated KC over the years with ice cream shops (Glacé on the South Plaza), a huge presence and emerging brand, and terrific collaborations. Glad to have such a solid KC treat to call our own, and highly recommended whether you’ve had them 100 times or are passing through.
