Had so much fun breaking out of Szechuan Secret! Great bonding with friends and lots of laughs. I’m so addicted — I want to try every room now!

Best fun ever!!! I highly recommend this for any group. Great time had by all. We did the Szechuan room, even though we didn’t find the code to get out we were so super close. Would do this again in a heartbeat.

We had a marvelous family adventure today. We’ve never done anything like it! We did the Szechuan room. Didn’t really know what to expect, but instructions were clear, staff was friendly, and experience was well worth it. This is a great concept for families (especially visiting) who want to spend some time together but in a more novel way. Probably best for teens and up, which is really cool because how many things are out there for teens to enjoy with parents and extended family? Super plus! Highly recommended experience! I don’t know downtown KC well, but area felt safe. Sufficient parking and a number of nice eating establishments within walking distance.

By far the most fun birthday party I have been to as an adult.
We went to Breakout KC back in January with a group of 8 of us (with a reservation — it’s a must!), and were guided in to try and tackle the Truman Room. I consider myself to be a bit of a sleuth, plus I was accompanied by some engineers, so I figured we were going to be on the better side of the 24% success rate. All brainiacs aside, this was a challenging quest, and although we were on the final step, we ended up running out of time. Despite our defeat, it was an absolute blast, and made me want to try all of the rooms.
Truly a great option for any birthday/​team-​building/​group outing you may have.

My dad recently retired from a long, loyal career dedicated to the federal government, and my wife, siblings and I decided to treat him to a day of fun in KC. Somehow, an activity with the word «breakout» just seemed right for the occasion…
We booked our breakout session about three months ahead of time. On the morning of our appointment, we received a call from the facility accusing us of «missing our appointment», even though we had a booked and confirmed reservation for later in the day, and provided them proof of said appointment via their own receipt. After that, they finally owned up to having double booked our time slot, and then began trying to strong arm us into a different time. No apologies or owning up to the error, even though we had a proven, «confirmed» appointment. Having spent nearly my entire professional career (19 years) in miscellaneous client-​facing positions, varying from customer service to sales, this upset me profusely. Attempting to assign blame to a customer instead of owning up to an error is more than faux-​pas, it’s really bad business. Had we not already made baby-​sitting plans for our kids, and my father not driven 80 miles to participate in the aforementioned day of retiree fun, we would have cancelled and expended whatever necessary effort demanding a refund.
That debacle aside, the product on offer really was a lot of fun, and is well-​executed. We did the River Quay Casino room, and between five adults, were not able to break out! I would tell you we were close, as we were on the last «step» of breaking out when the time ran out, but we took clues nearly every step of the way. Unassisted, I have a feeling we would have been stuck in there for 30 or 40 hours… Okay, that’s an exaggeration… but at least four or five.
Some issues affect a review rating a star downgrade, maybe two. However, this one was handled so poorly I wish I could assign 0 stars. I suppose that since the actual game held water, I can stomach allowing one star. Suffice to say, if we choose to do an experience like this again, we will be going with the competitor — Escape KC.

We went here for my husbands birthday. We were a party of 4. We did the Truman Room and did not escape (we came extremely close), however, it was really fun and definitely WORTH the price!

Great Fun!!! My husband and I went here and managed to get out. It was a great time. I think this is a good team building exercise. You get a chance to see each other’s skills and how to work well with each other.

Loved it! Our group got out just in time! The Szechuan room exceeded my expectations. This was my third time in an escape room (all three times in different cities), and I would definitely say this room was challenging and worth it.

Although we didn’t «breakout» we had a great time! We were soooo close. An hour well spent working together as a team and meeting new people! Don’t be afraid to ask for clues. It was packed on NYE and the space isn’t too big to begin with. We didn’t get a chance to unwind afterwards. I felt a bit rushed after we completed the challenge but, that didn’t take away from our experience. During the colder months, you can take your coat with you. They have a basket in the room where you can place your personal belongings!

Came here for a Unilocal event! I had no clue what to really expect, I had heard brief stories of people who had done it, but not a lot of details. — I DEFINITELY wouldn’t do this with a group of less than 6. there is a lot of thinking and teamwork needed, so I would also suggest coming with people that work well together. We were in the casino room — SO much fun, kept me on my toes, made me think, and still left there thinking it was pretty amazing. The rooms do get a bit hot by the end of your time, but that could also be because you’re going a mile-​a-​minute. Cannot wait to go again!

This was so cool. I’m in college and went with a group of friends and we had a blast. We did «Szechuan Secret» and it was really challenging, fun, frustrating and super satisfying after we got it!
Great for a party, triple date, bachelor party or any group time.
People working there were really nice and encouraging. I highly recommend this place.

Super fun activity. I was able to experience this due to a fun Unilocal event. 6 other Unilocalers and I locked in a room for an hour? Sounds like something that I would not want to pass up. I had never done a breakout room experience, so was not sure what to expect, so had set moderate expectations. It was so much more fun than I thought it would be.
Solving puzzles and riddles, while spending time with friends, is a great way to get to know each other better while having a great time. My group was not able to «breakout,» but we were super close and had a ton of laughs getting through the room.
As a side note, for those of you who have concerns about being locked in – at any time you can leave to use the bathroom or get a breath of air, and then rejoin your friends when you are ready – so everyone can be comfortable and have fun.
I will totally be back to try another room. I am already brushing up on my critical thinking skills!

Just finished a second room at Breakout KC and really enjoyed both of them. I had never tried any of these escape rooms before but always wanted to try it. The first time we tried the Casino room, and we were just one step away from completing it! Determined to break out of a room we came back to attempt what at the time was the easiest room, Room 13. Upon arriving the workers mentioned they had just updated Room 13 that week to make it more difficult. We were much more efficient the second time and were able to break out of Room 13 in the new record time!
The puzzles inside each room were interactive and required cooperation and teamwork which was great. The workers were helpful with both clues we requested (you are given 3 free clues, the rest cost 5 minutes added to your time) and were also great to help us when we were getting stuck. Online reservations were easy to make.
The only reason I’m not giving Breakout 5 stars is it’s pricey. It was $ 31 per person after tax. The second time we were able to find a discount code which came out to $ 26 per person. I understand all the work that goes into setting and maintaining the rooms but that’s still quite a bit to pay for an hour of entertainment for most people. Overall a great experience.

The most fun you can have being locked in a room with strangers… by choice!
I visited Kansas City in October to see a few friends and they made reservations at Breakout KC for a little fun on Saturday morning. Online reservations were easy, registration /​check-​in at the Breakout KC office was quick and simple, the staff were friendly and fun.
The experience… wow…just WOW! So. Much. Fun. We did the Truman Room and it was an epically memorable experience! The room allows up to 8 people. We joined a group of 4 and we all got to work. This room was challenging and kept us on our toes as we moved from clue to clue figuring out how to escape… in the end we came up short discovering 1 out of 4 digits for the key pad code to open the door… a few more minutes and we would have had made it!
I cannot recommend Breakout KC more! Try the Truman Room!

I came here for a Unilocal event, not really knowing what to expect. I never thought this could be as much fun as it was. The guide was super helpful and we had a great group (*hint* come with smart friends). There is a rule of no phones inside, which is good because you REALLY need to focus and think. It does take the entire group to get out, so no slacking people! We ended up getting out with about 4 ½ minutes to spare. I highly recommend this and can’t wait to come try another room!

Get locked in a room and try to get out in a hour. Simple enough, right? You’ll walk in with a swagger with the belief you’ll shatter the records of all those that came before you — getting out of the room with plenty of time to spare. 55 minutes later, you’ll wonder if you’ll even see sunlight again.
I’ll admit, at first, I didn’t understand the appeal of a place like Breakout KC. However, after going through a room, I want to try all of them now. If, for nothing else, to prove I’m not as dumb as I felt after failing to free myself from my temporary prison. Throughout your time at Breakout KC, you’ll receive hints from a helpful monitor as yourself and others try to solve all the clues and find all the codes to break free. I’d like to not spoil the surprises that await you in the room, but I’ll just say that when you start feeling confident, things happen to totally break you down. Or at least leave you scrambling to get out before time is up.
Also, if something about being locked in a room terrifies you, don’t worry too much, you can always temporarily leave and re-​enter once you’ve gone to the bathroom or taken a breather or screamed into a wall. Do be aware, however, that cell phones are not allowed. So, get over the fact you’ll be disconnected from the world for an hour.
Now, get to practice solving some puzzles in an effort to not feel like an idiot when you can’t actually break out.

I wasn’t sure what to expect going into Breakout KC, but I had more fun than I’ve had in a long time. After entering the room, you are introduced to the staff who will be assisting you through the game. You are shown a video with instructions and receive your first clue. Then the mad dash to escape the room begins.
A lot of the experience depends upon the team you are working with. The more you are able to work as a team, the better the chance that you will escape and the more fun you will have. I can see this would be a great team building activity.
The room was well designed and really transported you to the locale of the story. The puzzles were challenging and really made you think in new and different ways. We were able to escape the Casino with 4 minutes remaining, but don’t feel bad if you aren’t successful… The success rates for many of the rooms are pretty low.
I am excited to return and try new rooms! This was a really fun way to spend an hour!

Going to Breakout KC was my first experience with these «escape rooms». I must say it was a great time! I participated with a group of friends (8 of us total) so I can’t lend any experience with strangers. My advice would be to only be put in a room with people you know you will be comfortable with and that you won’t get frustrated with. I thought it was very well thought out and unique. In my opinion the price is very affordable. I would say the minimum you would probably want is 5 or 6 because there are so many tasks. It was an exhilarating experience to say the least but definitely want to go back in the near future. I did speak with the workers there and they said the owners plan to periodically change the rooms as new ideas come along.
By the way our team did the «Truman Room» and got out in 55:50.

No real instructions. The workers will place you in a room and will tell you to watch a video. Shut up and watch the video and you’ll get all your questions answered.
This is SUCH a fun thing to do with people you know; however, the second time I went, we had a group of three placed with five others that we didn’t know. If there is more than one Type A person in a group, be forewarned, you will get annoyed. It took every ounce of me not to punch the blonde bitch who was in our group as her aggressive and annoying personality seriously took the fun out of the my second experience. It’s a group effort, not constantly say, «I’ll do it, I can do it, let me do it». Even thinking about her now makes my blood boil. I hope she comes across this review…
Anyways, go with a group you KNOW. It will make the experience that much better.

So yesterday I decided to try this place called Breakout KC that I had heard about on the news, the premise is they lock you in a room and in an hour you have to break out.
Well my time was nothing short of phenomenal, the puzzles were challenging, the scenario was interesting, the owners were friendly and genuinely excited for us to win. And win we did with 10 seconds left and as we did the owner came and yelled his congratulations and gave us all high fives. The high that we got from the experience took a while to come down from. Ultimately I would just like to highly recommend everyone to give Breakout KC a try.
