History

Established in 2003.

The original store is located in Weston, Missouri. Lori Woods, former teacher and local Brooksider, opened up shop in 2003 after visiting the Weston store for the first time in 2002. She knew that Brookside was the perfect place to add another location and was determined to find an additional home for 5B&Co. candles. The creative names and unique scents were an instant attraction, and have made an impression on Kansas City residents ever since. Customers enjoy smelling the variety of candles in the store, and always have a laugh at the creative names such as I’m the Boss Applesauce, You Bet Your Sweetgrass, and Get the Smell Outa Here. Since then, customers have enjoyed shopping at 5B&Co. in Brookside and sharing their favorite scents with friends and family.

I’m addicted to this place. They have a large variety of amazing and unique scents. It’s the best shop for thoughtful and unique gifts for every occasion. The candles are heavily scented, very high quality, and fill up the entire house. The staff is always friendly and knowledgeable. It’s also locally owned and operated. Love it!

Found a Brookside Candle (never been lit) at a local thrift store in CA with the name «Lavender» — yep just Lavender… Nothing fancy but definitely does have that distinct, fulfilling scent I’ve read about online. Hadn’t heard of this company prior to my purchase, but I have already begun my search for local stores that may carry them, and online shopping is always available too, of course. I’ve had it burning for probably 6 hours since I brought it home, and my apartment already has that lightly powerful, homey smell that I love.

I had my eye on 5B & co candles for a very long time. On my trip to Denver, CO, I stopped at the Brookside store and fell in love :) I purchased 2 Dozen votives, and on my way home, stopped again to purchase another dozen. I also bought a few gifts for others who also are in love with them.
I wish I lived closer to the shop! I also called an ordered 3 dozen this week, as they were having a store wide sale 25% off… I am a customer for life :))

I love candles and 5B fuels that fire (HA!) This tiny shop is nestled in Brookside and provides good smells (and names) to entertain you for quite some time. Every time I visit, I seem to lose track of time! The shop owner is SO helpful… From teaching you the proper way to smell candles to introducing you to scents you never would have thought existed… Some of my favorites include brookside bungalow and ginger grapefruit (along with many more). I guess what I really love is that the scents are always so unique.
The shop is very small, but that doesn’t stop the variety of candles it carries. The standard size is a votive candle, but honestly I love that size because once I am done I can change scents and always keep it new and interesting! 5B also carries pretty votive holders, wax melts of some scents, and seasonal scents.
I would highly recommend checking this place out!

What a great shop! I loved it from the moment I walked in. The aroma was incredible and then to learn that they have candles that smell just like popcorn, rawhide, fresh cut flowers … clean undies … endless selection. Definitely the place to go for candles & they will refill your favorite containers.

I feel like a hound dog in this place, but everyone else sniffs with equal enthusiasm, so I guess I’m good! Wow! I came here to do a little shopping for a picky friend. Thanks to Jimmi H. for his review, or I don’t think I would’ve ever learned of it. It’s tiny, and in all my visits to Brookside, I guess I have overlooked 5 B.
Basically, the only way to do it right is to go down the line of votives, pull out every single one, sniff, and continue until you have smelled all 50+ smells. Brookside Bungalow, Handyman, Clean Undies, etc, all smell amazingly like their names. As well, you can find several traditional scents. I haven’t burned any yet because I only purchased for gifts, but I plan on returning soon to load up in the ones I want for myself! Customer service is superb! When you check out, they painstakingly label every single votive in your basket.
Why four and not five? Because their selection of larger than votives is very very limited. I understand they pour in batches, but I wish they could have a larger selection of bigger candles.
I can’t wait to go back.

Candles, what can you say? Once upon a time they served a vital purpose and now they mostly serve as aesthetics, but man I love them! Want to know what I love even more? Long lasting, great smelling candles! There you have it, that’s why I am a big fan of 5B.
I have been burning their candles for about a year now, but this past weekend was the first time I actually made it into their store. It was the first stop on a shopping crawl with some fellow Unilocalers and they did such a great job setting the tone. The space is not huge, but very well used. I mean, these are locally made candles, a boutique setting is only appropriate. On one wall were many fixtures set with all sorts of candle holders and tea lights and so forth. On the other… well what we went there for, the candles!
I know from experience that these candles last much longer than your regular votive, but what makes them extra special are the flavors… I mean scents. Sure they have your vanilla (literally) scents but they also have «A Night at the Movies» with real popcorn in them, and «Monkey Burps» named by a 5 year old. My favorite: «Handy Man!» Not just because I have an undying need to be a stereotype, but because it really smelled good, manly and fresh. It even came with the tiniest of nails sticking out of the top. What a great little detail to make this candle just that much more special. I know we are about to run out of the box we have lying in wait, so I look forward to another visit to 5B and from the «Handy Man!»

I love, love, love this store. It is definitely the place for any gift occasion. A nice plus — they ship too! Which is super convenient for me because my cousin is equally in love with this store and lives out of state.
I have bought all scents of candles. I think my favorite is Brookside Bungalow. It is flowery without being sweet. It truly smells like a bouquet of flowers. You won’t be rushed while smelling and looking at all the beautiful candle accessories. The shop has a great laid back feel.
I like the holiday gift packs too. Over Halloween, there were several packs with different seasonal scents and appropriate accessories. Again, this place is a great place to find anyone who loves candles a gift. Heck, treat yourself too!
I haven’t been disappointed with anything I have bought. I really like supporting a local company too. Plus everyone is really friendly and welcome you into the store.

I have a thing for candles — you’ll always find at least one burning in my home at any given time. So, when I was given a 5B candle recently for my birthday, I was a happy girl! And when I found myself in Brookside the following weekend, I had to stop into 5B and «just look around».
There are a ton of different scented votives to be had here, from the flowery to the herbaceous, to food… and beyond. Each votive has its own receptacle, with a heated votive of that scent above or below it, so that you can get a good whiff of the candle you might be interested in buying. There are seasonal scents (the one I was gifted with is the St. Patrick’s Day one, which I believe is a mix of cinnamon, mint, and vanilla, but don’t quote me on that. Whatever it is, I love it), so if you’re currently in a place where you want your place to smell like Spring, 5B is going to be able to meet your needs. Some of the candles have a much stronger scent than others (they all are well scented, it’s just that some smells seem to have more «oomph» than others), so if you’re not a fan of extremely «smelly» candles, you can still find some delicately scented ones to bring home.
The person in the shop was helpful and friendly, and was happy to walk newbies through the candle smelling procedure. My husband and I smelled a ton of candles, and were able to come up with 5 that we both liked on this particular visit, though admittedly, I could’ve bought more. The price for 5 votives was under $ 20, which was more than reasonable, and I liked the fact that I was not only supporting a local business but also buying clean burning candles. Because who wants a ton of soot in the air?
I wish that some of the candles came in larger sizes, but hey, this way I get to try out different scents more frequently, and I know I’ll have some favorites picked out very soon.

5B & Co. is my new favorite establishment to buy candles from, outside of Lawrence that is. It has all if the key elements that I love when giving a gift, handmade, local and a fun experience. Who doesn’t enjoy the experience of burning an amazing scented candle on a chilly night. The scents are original and rich, how can you not fall in love with a candle named «Monkey Burps», it smells like bananas. No I don’t really want to burn a banana scented candle but I adore the name. All of the candles are made on site and it’s in a great location in Brookside right next to Foo’s Frozen Custard.

This is a charming little boutique in Brookside.
I stopped in a couple of weeks ago because I was shopping for a gift for my grandmother and I was immediately drawn in by the quirks of the store. Namely, I loved how the candles all were given original names that tied to seasonal and local smells. Christmas flavors included names like Baby Jesus, the Plaza Lights, Candy Cane and Gingerbread. While I was browsing a woman working asked if I needed help and noticed I was looking at the Gingerbread, which was running a little low. She told me if I was really interested in the Gingerbread she was pouring more that day and she would hold a couple for more to pick up tomorrow. +1
Prices? Super reasonable. I walked out with four semi small candles and a candle holder for under $ 20. Plus I picked up a couple of gift certificates for some other family members while I was there.
Parking is available in spots on the street and in a small lot across the street. Even with these spots it can take a while for one to open up at peak hours. If you’re in a time crunch you may want to try and stop during a slower time.

What started out to be a way to dodge the rain after learning Julia (n) next door was closed for lunch turned out to be an awesome discovery of good smelliness.
This is a cute little shop, packed to the gills with candles and candle accessories. It’s homey without looking like a craft fair threw up all over the walls. I guess that just goes with being in Brookside, there’s just a certain taste level in MOST of the establishments in the neighborhood. They make all of the candles in-​house, and in fact on the day of my visit had just finished up a batch. It was a bit of an assault on the senses, so many scents at once! That being said, when I was able to smell the candles individually I was quite impressed!
As anybody familiar with the store can attest, the have completely wackadoodle names for the different scents. Some are risqué (for the candle world at least). But my favorite name? Brother Love’s Traveling Salvation Show. Who doesn’t want a candle named after an all but forgotten Neil Diamond song? That sounds like something I’d enjoy burning in my apartment!
Special consideration must go to Flower Shop, which is DEAD ON for what it smells like to go into one of those cooler rooms where they keep all the flowers. It’s nuts, the accuracy of this fragrance.
My one complaint? I don’t think they burn as long as advertised. But whatevs.
It sounds like this Brookside outpost of a Weston, MO candle store has been around for quite a while, though I had never heard of it. I’m thankful for that fateful rainstorm, because I plan for my apartment to smell like 5B & Co. from now on!

This store personifies what it means to shop in locally owned Brookside shops: attractive décor, knowledgeable & friendly staff, reasonable prices and a unique selection of product. 5b has the usual floral scents but also very unique scents: Brookside Bungalow, KC BarBeQue, Tighty Whiteys – those are just a few of the options that will make you say ‘I’ve got to smell this!’.
The candles are packaged so you don’t have to gift wrap them and each comes with a hand written label so you know what scent it is. There’s also a good selection of candle holders and other décor items.
Besides shopping here, you will like just chatting with the staff – always ready to help or make suggestions.

This place is great! I bought my mother’s birthday gift here. It was a sleeve of five or six different candles. She loved it! I wish I could remember each of the scents, but I do remember a brown sugar and a lemongrass and they smelled amazing. I wanted to eat them.
The girl behind the counter was extremely helpful and actually seemed excited to assist me. I would gladly give 5B my business again.
I don’t usually shop in places like 5B so I don’t have much to compare it to, but it served the exact purpose I was hoping it would — to make my mother happy :)

Monkey Farts and Put On Your Big Girl Panties. No, this isn’t a bachelorette party Mad-​Lib game. These are two votive candle scents I purchased while exploring the Brookside neighborhood.
I stumbled upon this charming little shop after my first ever coffee at the The Roasterie Café. I was immediately greeted by the shop owner who was busy decorating for the holidays. I was amused at the word play with the candle names! The owner asked if I needed tags to remember the scent names. I laughed and said there’s no chance of me forgetting them.
My significant other seems to have no fear of fire and has accidentally left candles burning through the night. Yet, I still encourage this behavior by surprising her with gifts of candles. (brownie points is how I roll).

I am probably one of the few people on Unilocal who have a list dedicated to stores that promote or allow for good smells. What can I say? I don’t just *love* a good smell, I *need* to have good smells around me at all times. It’s a rare time that I don’t have a candle lit or a stick of incense burning in my house. Ever wonder who buys travel candles? That would be me.
A lot depends on the time of day or the weather (early mornings in the spring might mean mint almond cones, while summer afternoons might sandalwood and rose incense sticks… fall evenings find me lighting up spicy amber candles, maybe pumpkin… don’t get me started!!! Wait, one more! Late summer nights… musky jasmine flowers!). Smells also depend on the mood I am in. Or the mood I’d *like* to be in (nothing like the smell of coffee to brighten my mood).
And the people behind 5B totally get this, too. They seem to be able to tap into matching a name or description of something to a scent in one of their candles, as esoteric as this may seem. i don’t know what oils go into some of these candles but you look at the name and pick up the candle and suddenly it makes total sense. It seems just right that this candle smelling like… something you can’t put your finger on smells *just like* what you’d imagine «Put on your big girl panties,» or «the Bottom of Mom’s Purse» might smell like, but even better, that is, what you’d *like* such a thing to smell like. Don’t worry! They have the traditional scents like patchouli, sandalwood, etc., too, and some mixed with other scents (patchouli orange… mmm! I really like patchouli when it’s mixed with something else).
Today’s purchase (how did I contain myself?) was a pair of more conservatively named «Oak Moss» votives which smell wonderfully woody and smokey. I will light them on the next stormy night we have. I absolutely cannot wait to go back and try some more!
I will also be back for those giant incense garden sticks that ward off the mosquitoes that have already started feasting on my ankles so early in the season when I dare sit out on my porch after sunset.

Like all the other Unilocalers, I really enjoy this store as well. There are so many different kinds of candles to try, and the employees/​owner are always really helpful when I’m in there and try to find me the scent I’m looking for.
I used to think that only Yankee candles could give me the strength of scent that I wanted in a candle, but these locally-​made candles let me support a local business while also making my apartment smell wonderful. I always get compliments when I light one when guests are coming and it is just so peaceful and serene to have these great smelling candles to come home too.
This is their second location; they have 2 others, but one is in Belton and the other is in Great Bend– both a little far from KC!
