Thankfully this location has been provided some relief due to the Maui Lani location opening up a few miles away. They used to be crazy busy! The only downfall to this store is the dirty exterior which needs a good power washing and sanitation due to a homeless problem. If you haven’t tried their soups, bakery items, or store-branded products, you’re definitely missing out! BAKERY: Cupcakes — The white ones are my absolute favorite. They’re consistently moist and have excellent creaminess. Worlds better than Magnolia Bakery! Neapolitan Ice Cream Cake — Why go to Baskin Robbins and spend way too much money there? This $ 20 circle of goodness starts with a chocolate cake at the bottom, then is layered with vanilla and strawberry ice cream, and topped with Cool Whip spread and strawberry-flavored curls. Delish! Banana Cream Pie — Good ‘ol Safeway is the only market I can find this at, and dammit, theirs rocks. The crust isn’t as buttery as I’d like but the filling is spot on in the flavor department. Priced fair at under $ 10. Donuts — I buy the sugar ones and pan fry them in a little butter. The outside gets crispy and chewy and the inside warm and soft. Holla!!! DELI: Portuguese Bean Soup — A friend told me about this. Being that she’s Portuguese was more of a validation for me lol. The soup is medium thick, with really good flavor and just a tiny hint of sweetness which I even approve of. The soup is full of sliced Portuguese sausage, bits of ham, beans, onions, cabbage, and some macaroni. This was served in the warming pot but I’m unsure if they sell it cold in the plastic containers. Baked Potato Soup — It honestly tastes like they put a loaded spud in a blender and turned it on high. Amazingly good. Italian Wedding Soup — I haven’t seen this on the shelves recently, but it’s really tasty. It’s a pretty hearty soup with meatballs, veggies, and orzo pasta. Chicken Noodle Soup — Nothing hits the spot when you’re sick like a steaming hot bowl. It has big chunks of chicken and wide noodles, but sometimes too much basil. Better than the canned stuff though! FREEZER: Ice Cream Bars — Their house brand, Safeway Select, does not disappoint! For an everyday price of $ 4.99, you get 12 chocolate covered vanilla ice cream bars. Absolutely delish. SEAFOOD: They have a great selection of pokē. My favorite is the California Roll which is ahi mixed with a creamy sriracha, furikake, and tobiko. Holy geezuz. OVERALL: This store definitely has way more pros than cons.

Just around the corner from the airport, this Safeway is very convenient for tourists just landing and ready to stock up for vacation needs. It’s a small space so every square foot is stocked and organized to maximize the shopping adventure. We landed around 8 at night and the team of folks working here at this hour were very very helpful, friendly and happy to be of service, too. One amazing young woman assisted us in finding several items during our visit. She knew right down to the section of each aisle where the items were located and what size containers of each product they carried and recommended the brands that were the biggest bang for our buck, too! This location is open 24⁄7 and has a great produce department, a bakery and a deli. They also have a pharmacy and a floral department-like I said– LOTS packed into a small space. Grocery heaven!

Has the essentials but its expensive. Produce selection is limited. That being said the stuff we got was good but it was expensive even for Maui standards. The red grapes were 8 $ a pound. If its available, Foodland is definitely the better option, both for selection and price.

Filthy disgusting bathrooms. I won’t ever buy food here. If this is what they show the public, the back has to be scary.

The most disgusting safe way I have ever stepped foot in. The bath rooms doors where broken and there was dirty toilet paper all over the floors.

Safeway is the store we always come to whenever we need to buy groceries. I’ve grown to love this store, especially for their $ 5 Fridays and 30%-50% off chicken, pork, steak, & fish. We’re here almost every Friday, for a fast dinner of 8pcs of chicken for just $ 5! During the week, we check their sales for meat… We’ve purchased many 50% off items many times just to have it on hand in our freezer.

This location has always struggled with staffing for the after work rush 430pm-600pm. They send cashiers on break with more than four people in line, just seems like the execution has not improved over the years. Definitely not something new for them and I’m sure will be an issue in the future.

I wasn’t eager to write a 5-star review of a Safeway in Hawaii, but good lord, this place was useful. We did our best to find local restaurants and food trucks on Maui, but the pickings were extremely slim in the Kahului area. As a result, we bought about a pound of poke at Safeway almost every day, and it was as good as any we had on the islands. Prices throughout the store are reasonable by HI standards, and it’s a good place to pick up booze and food souvenirs like macadamia nuts cheaper than you’ll find them at the ABC tourist shops.

Crap service. Stood in line for 5min to be notified line was closed in front of us. Next line we walked to, told the same. Walked to customer service and waited and waited. Go to another supermarket.

Buying a simple cake? Want to add words? Do it yourself. The past 2 times I’ve been there the workers were so horrible at handling the cake that I wanted. This guy almost dropped it and didn’t even have the right size box. He also placed the wording not at the center of the cake. Not only that but he acted like he didn’t even want to work there. Horrible customer service couldn’t even answer my questions. Never buying a cake there ever again.

Great place to buy your regular supply of food items. Not as big as the one in Kihei. Just wish their sushi section wasn’t like every other store. They used to make these«real» Japanese sushi containing puckled daikon, gourd, etc, but discontinued it several years back. Wish they had more varieties of gatorades. The check-out ladies are really nice. One asked if we had a Safeway card. She gave me one and I completed the application using the ipad available at the svc counter. Get one if you don’t have one. It’ll save you some $$, especially when you get sticker shock. Stuff we normally get on the mainland wouldn’t cost us more than $ 100, but it cost us close to $ 300 here. Yep.

Linda in floral was a life saver when it came to me needing something fast on the spot. Availability and selection of leis was the best in Kahului.

If you like overpaying(~50%+ premium) to shop at the«tourist supermarket» of Kihei, welcome in! Mahalo for your $$. Enjoy da bright lights. Premium is compared to the Times Supermarket, a 2 minute drive away, but there is also a significant premium to Foodland.

What great food they offer at incredible prices compared to Sack and Save in Wailuku. The fact that they have a BOH Branch inside their store leaves me lost for words. One of my Favorite areas is the Fish Department with the Ahi, Poke, & Lobster.

This Safeway has the BEST poke we had from a Safeway on the island. I think they must all use the same recipes, but whoever made it here has the magic touch.

Quick, clean, convenient, we came here to get some drinks for our fridge in our hotel room and sunblock, we were in and out of there. I loved it! It’s located close enough to all the resorts too!

I never thought I’d be reviewing the Safeway, but this is regarding the sandwich section/deli. The create-your-own sandwich option is great for having them make a basic turkey sandwich, and the other sandwiches are worth trying as well. HOWEVER, if you are on your lunch break, or are pressed for time, you might as well get something else to eat. There’s usually a line of 1 to 2 people there, but there’s only one person making the sandwiches, and sometimes they have to step away and get meat, bread, or cheese from the deli case or shelf. Hope this review saves you some time!

if you are looking to get the most bang for your buck on groceries, this is the only show in town. Sack and Save is a joke, as is the Foodland on the North Shore. Get your few organic specialty items at Mana Foods(Paia) or Alive and Well. Their pre-made sushi is awesome(the hawaii roll feeds two for under 10) and they have the best selection of ready to go flowers for your girlfriend to show here that you were thinking about her every couple of days. fast check out too, and clean store with lots of produce and even local produce(like Kula farms).
