What a great way to spend an afternoon in Jim Thorpe! Pinzgauers are crazy Austrian off road vehicles. Not four wheel drives, because they have six wheels. So six wheel drives. Guests climb in the back of these odd vehicles for several hours of off roading — much of it through the remains of old open pit mines. The mines are overgrown and aside from the exposed coal rock in places, you wouldn’t know unless the tour guide told you. The tour ends with a chance to find fossils in shale — it isn’t tough and everyone on our tour scored some nice fossils. The price is perfect — we paid around $ 60 per person, which includes several hours of off roading, snacks, a fantastic guide, and a trip through part of Pennsylvania you won’t see from the economy box import your husband made you buy because he was too cheap to get a good car. One warning: the tour includes leaving the vehicle at several stops and passing through tall grass. Given the concerns about Lyme disease and ticks, I’d recommend the tour operator tell folks upfront so they can plan to dress accordingly. On our tour, we had tourists in flip flops and shorts wading through tall grass in rural Pennsylvania — certainly not recommended during the summer months. This is a minor fix — simply wear longer pants and closed shoes, or forego the bits where one walks through the grass. I think the tour would have been just as much fun had I opted to stay with the vehicle during these short stops. Five stars — well worth the money, incredibly fun and not something you’ll find elsewhere.
