We are Hudson County’s only homebrew supply shop, with all the equipment and ingredients to make your own beer, wine, mead, or cider. We also have hundreds of craft beers, wine, and liquors. We also offer classes on how to make your own beer and other drinks at home!

History

Established in 2014.

Hudson County has long had a large homebrew community, but no homebrew supply shop. We opened in 2013 to fill that gap and satisfy the demand for a local shop with knowledgeable staff. We also decided that craft beer would make a natural fit, so we have hundreds of craft beers in stock, including hard to find and rare beers. We are very active in the local homebrew community, especially with the Jersey City Brew Club.

Thirsty Quaker has a great selection of beers from far and wide Great spot if you are on the go and need something quick or wanting something pretty specific. And for a beer focused place — the wine and liquor selection is pretty decent too.
You should find whatever you need or are in the mood for — and if you aren’t sure the staff will totally help you out.
They also have classes and supplies for those who want to home-​brew beer themselves — for the rest of us we can enjoy the awesome selection.

Really nice little shop with a friendly staff and fun eclectic craft beer collection. y boyfriend and I went in looking for pumpkin beers that we haven’t tried before and there were soooo many brands to chose from.
When we were checking out the two working there were a little quiet but very friendly and willing to answer any of our questions. They were in the process of harvesting their very own hops from the bs l yard! Very cool, will come again.

Excellent selection of craft beer and friendly staff who are proactive about recommending brews. Plenty of six packs and single bottles in their fridges, plus a decent selection of wine and hard liquor if you don’t feel like drinking beer. They run events and tastings, and are even open to ordering things for you by request.

There was a previous review that was ‘not recommended’ by Philip S. But he hit the nail on the head. Good selection of beers but awful customer service. Don’t get a «hello, can I help you?» Nothing! Just a miserable, mumbled «thank you» as you leave. Not a good way to keep customers. Madame Claude is the place to go.

Was very excited to try this place after reading all the reviews. Walked in on a Friday mid afternoon. Was the only customer in the shop. No greeting, only got a half hearted wave after I made eye contact and said hello. No «Can I help you find something?» Beer selection is very good. not outstanding. Still made a nice purchase, a bottle of Mongo and Avery Maharishi. Got a mumbled thank you. I don’t know, every place has an off night. Maybe the counter guy was new, or maybe he was the owner’s brooding nephew who was being forced to work that day. I will try this place again and hopefully have a better experience. If so will change my rating of this place. Guys, you need to work on customer service.

Well now there’s no need for me to go to Buyrite in Jersey City anymore. The Thirsty Quaker is hands down the best craft beer store in the area, possibly in the entire state of dirty Jerz. Remember the feeling you would get by walking into a record shop and browsing and being able to talk to the staff about their favorite new albums? Well this place has the same vibe, just with beer! These guys are passionate about beer and that’s displayed in their knowledge, enthusiasm and the selection they have available. There is a solid representation of NJ brews, other domestics and imports. They even have brewing equipment and supplies. I feel really fortunate to live within walking distance of this fine establishment. The next time you’re in the mood for a rye IPA, imperial stout or a trappist ale, head here!

Very cool place for beer lovers. They have a huge selection of microbrews from every part of the world in just about any flavor. And if you are interested in home brewing or wine making, they have everything you could need.

This place is awesome! Great selection and they are super knowledgeable. I came here seeking a nice beer to get my friend for her birthday. I spoke with Melissa the beer manager. I described exactly what my friend was into and Melissa gave me a few options. We narrowed it down to something new that we thought she would love. Melissa was right and my friend loved the beer (green flash IPA.) The staff is super nice in here (and Melissa was really funny too!) They aren’t snobby and they genuinely want to help you. I will be back and have already recommended the thirsty quaker to my friends. We also walked out of there with some free Brooklyn Brewery buttons and stickers.

This review is for the beer novice like me. I generally like beer, will drink it on occasion, and don’t really know anything about it.
This is a great local spot if you’re not tryna go to Buy-​Rite. A TON of craft beer selections, decently priced. The guys there always have recommendations. Also good for a bottle of wine or liquor, if you’re otw somewhere and realize last-​minute you should bring a generic gift.

This place has an incredible beer selection and a knowledgeable staff. If youre looking for a paeticular beer they will try to get it for you but keep in mind that the distribution laws in nj are very restrictive. You’ll be hard pressed to find a comparable selection outside of BuyRite.
What’s not mentioned in the other posts is the back room is chock full of home brew supplies. They cater to both beer and wine homebrewing which is killer because the closest place is in Clifton and brooklyn. Its scoop your own for grains and they ll gladly grind it for you at checkout.
Oh and they have private parking.
Get to know these guys and they bend over backwards for you. Welcome to the neighborhood!

My review is based on beer: I love stopping at this place. Incredible selection of beer and great service. Place is very organized and people here really know about brew. Quick and easy to find something you like. If you picky on wines, there other places in town that have a better selection. Madame Claude wine is where I go. But I must admit, if I’m in a hurry and need to pick up beer and wine. TQ won’t disappoint.

Cute, but it’s not like the neighborhood really needed another liquor store. There’s one on every other block. Monmouth Deli is the only business that’s been able to make a go of it in that zone. Good luck to them, though. And be careful.

This place is my boyfriend’s dream come true. Think of an obscure craft beer and they probably have it. They are also super helpful and friendly and you can tell craft beer is their passion. It really shows in how their business is run and I’m always enthusiastic about supporting a local business. Especially one that has such delicious beer so close to my apartment.

I love craft beer. I’ve been around to all the liquor stores in the area and this place has a great selection. I heard of this place of a while ago before they opened in the fall and I’ve been anticipating it since. Totally pleased in the end. Craft beer is their main thing and man they got a ton. Lot’s of breweries and specialty beers that other liquor stores don’t get in stock. The owner goes out of his way to update the website with every shipment of new beer! Super friendly owner and he knows his stuff.
I made my way to the back of the shop and took a peek in the grain room. Wall to wall grain bins. I’m not a homebrewer but it’s cool to know I can walk over to the Thirsty Quaker and get all the supplies I need to make my first beer.
They got a parking lot as well. I don’t know how they got one in JC.

I saw the owner of the Thirsty Quaker speak for a few minutes at DIY event at Hoboken Library. His description of the shop interested me enough that a friend and I walked over to it afterward. While home brewing is a bit labor intensive for me to pick up at the moment, the staff did convince me that making hard cider is extremely reasonable and fantastic. They’re knowledgeable and friendly and have a great selection of beers and ciders, if you are not taking the leap into home brewing. I’m going to head back to grab a few cheap things for cider making!

Okay, full disclosure — I live around the block from this place. So my opinion may be skewed by that. But I’ve been in here a few times and here are my thoughts:
1. They sell everything, beer and wine and liquor and mixers, for prices that are average and reasonable for a neighborhood store.
2. Last time I was there, they had winter beer on sale. Beer? On sale? Awesome.
3. They sell singles, which is great for people like me who want to try everything once even when I’m pretty sure I won’t like it.
4. All the homebrew stuff is up front and is really interesting looking. I can’t say more than that, I don’t know about homebrewing.
5. Staff has been awesome and friendly and chatty and helpful every time I’ve been in there.
So, at least a 4-​star store, plus one for staff helpfulness and the fact that it’s run by a local Quaker. Friends represent!
