I’m not sure where all these aggressive and bad reviews are com5from, actually wait I do-​its the world we live in. People don’t understand, don’t educate themselves and demand everything for nothing ASAP.
Now, on to my review. I’ve been renting from here since 2002 and I’ve never had a problem. I’ve rented trucks, vans, cars and Suv’s. I know both Dave’s (father & son) as well as Jeff. They know me by name, know all my moves, dramas, etc in 13 yrs. My rental has always been clean, no mechanical issues, no financial issues. In fact, there have been several times even in the beginning that they went out of their way to make a rental work for me if I had no credit card, maybe only cash or a bank card. That doesn’t mean that it couldn’t happen. We are all human (supposedly). But I believe they are fair and reputable.
I’ve lived in and or visited almost every state, I’ve NEVER seen a real $ 19.95 truck rental. This is uhaul’s ad, not econo car, and if you read the fine print or ask, you’ll know that’s not the only fee. Econo car, last time I checked isn’t associated with uhaul, they work with Penske. If you don’t understand something ask. My favorite car rental in NJ & NY.

This is the Worse Company EVER!!! DAVE ARE THEIVES… They tell you come in with a Deposit and we don’t take Cards over the Phone… I gave them my info in good faith, however I found a vehicle closer and this IDIOT after calling and telling him I didn’t need it anymore, Got all technical… Now the conversation he should of had, in the beginning, he didn’t, but now that I don’t want the vehicle, you want to give the terms of agreement… It’s a holiday Weekend, you would have gotten rid of the Van anyway… BUT THIS ASSHOLE WANTS TO CHARGE ME $ 100 for nothing… Ok no problem. We will see who has the last Laugh… They are Scam artist people, beware of fraudulent PEOPLE WORKING AT ECONO CAR… My Credit Card is in Dispute… Dave did not realize he was on a recorded line when we spoke and I will be filing a complaint with the BBB.

If Unilocal had Minus rating, I would have chosen that. But I have no option. I rented the car from this company. The company owner Dave SUGGESTED me to use my credit card insurance eventhough I wanted to use full coverage from both end by the car company. And, unfortunately, I met with an accident.
This person tortured me every single day for different procedures even though I wasn’t the direct beneficiary. I ran around like crazy to collect and send the documents for claim while he continued threatening me. I approached them to get the car fixed but he said he had his «OWN BODY SHOP» and he wouldn’t let his car go anywhere else. My insurance company approved the claim but he was still not satisfied and came after me for unverified expenses. He is so rude and intense and he has nothing else to do other than robbing you off your money. On top of that, he charged me double for the car rental period.
I can go on and on. But just one advise. Save your self time and energy. Especially if you are new and naïve because this person or company is nothing about good customer service. All they want is to fix you with junky car and then torture you for the unfortunate consequences.
DON’T GO HERE. Walk, Bicycle, Car Pool, Take a Bus but DON“T GO TO ECONOCAR…

The owner David Kramer has no sense of business etiquette & manners! They dont explain what you’re getting into as far as extra charges & that theres «2companies you’re dealing with when you enter» their doors! And he had the audacity to call me“crazy” & told me «f*ck yourself» (all quoted in this review are their exact words!)
I have been renting cars for years & never had a bad experience. We originally came about this company when we had to return a uhaul truck we rented from NY. There was no problem then but this time around, doing business with them has been aggravating. We needed to rent a truck to pick up furnitures. We went to their establishment bec since we returned a uhaul to them, we thought we can rent from them. Im the kind of customer i remember everything discussed bec if thing goes wrong specially w my money i will remind you what has been discussed!
We originally went there to rent a uhaul truck/​van for $ 19.95 daily rate. Mr Kramer was the one who took care of the rental. My husband told him w emphasis a couple of times that we want the $ 19.95 deal. He asked if we want the truck or van… we told him we are only picking up furnitures like dining table and chairs… he then said the van should be good a couple of times &my husband said yes & again mentioned $ 19.95. Mr Kramer asked if im the only driver and i said yes. I then gave him my card and id as he wrote the contract. Before he swipes as i usually would do when i rent cars, i told him i plan to pay cash upon returning. He assured me that it was just for pre-​authorization for $ 250 and nothing will be taken out of my account & that all i have to do is tell his staff that i will pay cash & they will then take out the authorization! That being said i signed the pink slip and on it was my initials and signature & the only numbers there were the preauthorized amount of $ 250 & approval code.
We go about our errands w the van. We returned the van in 4 hours. A nice man named Jeffrey helped us w the return process. We returned the van w full tank of gas. Then he started entering the rest of the numbers calculating the total of what we are suppose to pay. I watched him put all the itemized numbers. As he told us w the first calculation he gave us a total much higher than expected close to $ 200! Jeffrey told us that it was $ 69.95 for the van & thats what Mr Kramer entered in the
husband told him we repeatedly told Mr Kramer that we wanted the $ 19.95 deal &he then called him on the phone to confirm. He then changes the number & then we asked him whats this figure thats almost $ 38 dollars added. he said it was for the mileage which is $ 0.99 per mile and Jeffrey told us «that’s how they get you».I was talking to my husband that we were not told about the mileage or any other charges & that all Mr Kramer was interested about was swiping the card. Jeffrey then gave us a final & new total of $ 91.89. Before i paid i told Jeffrey i want a receipt of the cancelled authorization. I told him the $ 250 was taken out in my bank… if it was an authorization, that $ 250 will not affect my account but according to my paper statement that i had my bank print for me before returning the van, i told him i have proof of it. He tried to cancel the authorization but he told us he couldnt find the transaction but he said its cancelled. how do you cancel something you cannt find? He said he’ll throw the receipt that i signed as a cancelled transaction &that he cannot print a voided receipt! I then paid him cash &told him if the money is taken out & not returned by end of day i will be back as an unhappy customer. We left, as we were walking i told my husband to stop by the bank to see if that $ 250 was placed back in my acct, of course not! My banker said to wait til end of the day. The morning after i called to talked to Mr Kramer. I told him apparently the auth wasnt cancelled. As my account is short of $ 250. I told him when an auth is done & no charges are taken out, the money should be there at the end of the day! It became a back & forth argument. He tells me im «crazy!“The other issue i have w mr kramer he insited that my husband did not mention that we wanted the $ 19.95 deal & that the van is not under uhaul! Also that there are «2companies we are dealing with» when we «enter the doors!“i told him he never told us the price would be different. After i insisted my husband told him about the $ 19.95 he suddenly says ‚“he didn’t mention that til after“he swiped the card! This alone tells you that he changes stories & lies. Then at the end he tells me «f*ck yourself!». I never called him names nor curse him! He told me hes glad he’s «the owner» so he can say «whatever» he «wants!» Is that how you talk to customers Mr Kramer?! CUSTOMERS’ FEEDBACKS MATTER A LOT!

THE WORST. this establishment run by a really rude guy named Dave is the worst business you could imagine. They engage in every common bad business practice and a few new ones. For starters their advertised rates are a complete lie. Classic bait and switch. Then they make up fake damages and extra charges when you return the car. They hand write their rental agreements that they purposely make so confusing no one can understand them. They mistreat customers. They are rude and downright thug like. They ripped me off for hundreds of dollars and demanded i pay in cash The leader is the worst of the lot. He is abusive and mentally unbalanced He screams at people and is abusive to everyone. DO NOT RENT ANYTHING FROM THEM YOU WILL REGRET IT. I found a used condom in the vehicle I rented and he didn’t apologize he said «no charge». Then when I returned the car he told me I should have gotten the exterior washed. The nerve of this guy!!! But aside from his lack of social skills. HE CHANGED THE PRICE OF THE AGREEMENT ADDING A MADE UP SERVICE CHARGE. THE BETTER BUSINESS BUREAU IS QUITE FAMILIAR WITH THIS OPERATION. STAY AWAY. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED

Dave the owner spent HALF AN HOUR working phones to help me avoid the extra insurance fee, doggedly trying to confirm that my Amex card covered rental liability. My own card company person said it didn’t, but he figured out that it did and saved me $ 140. This after not finding a single avail car in the tristate area for Thanksgiving. Oh! And he offered us a weekly rate which turned out to be less expensive than the daily rate for a few days. We were expecting to get hosed bc of the holidays but didn’t. No wait, fast service. Beautiful new car. Family-​owned biz which is wonderful. I’ll be using EconoCar in the future instead of the biggies.

These guys were so great! I had a little bit of a crisis with my license, and they were SO helpful! I would have been SOL without them and they did everything they could in order to help me. They were very friendly and personal, I will definitely be going here again when I need to rent a car.
I was a previous advocate for Zipcar, however, after working with Econo, I got a much better deal and was given MUCH better customer service! I would highly recommend these guys again and again!

Econo-​Car is like having a brother in the rental car Buisness. Personal and friendly service unlike you will ever receive from the national brands. I can pick up the phone and speak with Dave or Jeff. They know me and they are accommodating as can be.
The fleet of cars is well cared for, refreshed regularly, and is a more exciting selection than other rental companies offer.
Prices are very reasonable. I live in NYC and take the Path train here if I am renting for two or more days. It’s totally worth it for the savings compared to Zipcar or rental cos in the City.
I have been renting from Econo-​Car for just about one year.

My car went soaked from Hurricane Sandy. As I was desparately trying to locate a rental car from the big «National» rental companies in NJ, none were available or helpful. I stumbled on Econo Car in Jersey City and connected with the owner Dave immediately on his cell. Power was still out in all of JC but he was still conducting business. I was pleasantly surprised by the professional customer service and the almost brand new cars at very reasonable price. I am extremely happy that Econo Car and would recommend them to anyone need a good car rental.

I don’t know why this place received bad reviews. People need to get a clue and read the fine print of their rental agreements, or ask questions. I was informed about every single one of my additional charges and none of them were anything abnormal… just insurance, taxes, etc. The people are no-​nonsense (I wouldn’t call them rude, just direct and to the point… like most business owners in JSQ). I did not receive ANY hidden charges. The price here is awesome… $ 40 for a standard car rental, per day. I am not sure but I believe it included everything, or the insurance surcharge was very small. The cars were clean, I was not charged for anything freaky, they were present during the pre-​rental inspection, and they put up with my daughter being hyper while they were on the phone. They even allow you to rent a car without a credit card (I used my bank card and they held a deposit), what other place does that. You can’t beat this price, and to be honest, every rental car place I have ever used in my life has had either hidden charges, rude people, or other hassles like not being allowed to use a regular bank credit card. Not everyone has non-​bank credit cards these days. I think they even gave me a free upgrade because they only had a larger car available that day. The office is very no-​frills, the people are very to-​the-​point rather than being of the phony, highly scripted customer service type found at many rental chains… but the service is solid and they are good honest people. I am definitely using them as my go to rental company here.

I used «Dave» and econo-​car for work for many years. There was a lot of friendliness and affability. But there was also lots of fast talking «mark it up, and discount it». I had to question bill after bill. Knew I needed to try a different company, but things were busy and didn’t have the chance.
Until one day, after 5 years of using the company there was a teeny tiny dint in the bumper. First time in 5 years. Firstly, there’s no certainty we caused it. No mind — «Dave» charged me $ 450 extra for the damage. I spoke with Penske, and they told me (after sending them the photo) that that kind of damage would be a $ 125 surcharge.
The guy was unreasonable, and then told me he was glad to finally find out what kind of person I was. Got to laugh at the cheek, and the dishonesty. Others in the business will attest to the fact this company is awful with your money. The owner can be very personable, but full of angles.
I could have contested it, but walked away and took my $ 8000 a year business with me. Moved over the proper Pennske (not a licensee), and got much better service. They knew what i had been through.
It could go fine for you, it might not. But for me, I like to take my business to trustworthy vendors, that won’t hit me with bogus charges as soon as I turn my back.
