Angel Azul Bakery Cafe

If you like good coffee, you should try this place! The ladies who work there are sweet. They have tons of little bakery treats to choose from. Galletas for day. I like to come here either for their great breakfast or some treats to stock up on when I have company over.

This is an excellent bakery, everything is fresh and delicious. The traditional Ecuadorian «humitas» are the best. The service is friendly and prices are great. Our favorite place for Sunday brunch.

One word: PANDEBONO. That bread alone makes the visit worth it. It’s not always out with the rest of the breads and pastries, but that’s a good thing. Cheesy, warm, pillowy, and inexpensive… it’s a carby dream.
The other breads are good as well. I’ve tried the pan de queso, bolos, and pan con jamón y queso. Arepas are tasty. I’ve yet to try the sweet pastries, but I admittedly don’t have much of a sweet tooth.
The bakery also offers breakfast. There are always empanadas, chicharrones, and other Colombian specialties behind the counter. Every time I’ve been to the bakery, I’ve seen at least two people enjoying a plate of something porky and assumedly delicious.
They accept credit cards, but I think it is a $ 10 minimum. Spanish is everyone’s preferred language, of course, but there is no barrier for those of you who don’t speak it. So go, ask them to fill your bags with pandebono and other amazing breads, and see how much of it actually makes it back to your house… if you’re like me, none of it will.

This is the Togo spot if you’re into Colombian food! They only serve breakfast and the kitchen items close at 1pm after that it’s just the bakery foods that are available.

This is a great little bakery! They have a nice selection of Spanish sweet breads and super strong coffee to get your day going. My dad used to love coming by here for their coffee!
My favorite is a bun called pan de bono (a cheese bread), which I reheat by throwing in my toaster oven for a minute or two. My dad used to love buying their bags of day old buns, usually in clear bags right by the register. They’re reduced price and still delicious.
They serve slices of cake and other desserts (flan, etc), fruit smoothies, and fresh juices. During the summer, they serve granizados (shaved fruit flavored ice drinks).
The place is super casual and has a few tables to eat at. Although, I always take my bread to go. Most of the employees have limited English but Google is my sidekick and ordering is simply pointing and sticking up my fingers to let them know how many I want. The prices are very reasonable and if I eat anything I don’t like, it’s simply part of the experience. The employees are nice and willing to give recommendations to help prevent that. But if anything, you win some, you lose some! (Except with pan de bono. You never lose with pan de bono!)

Walking around the Heights looking for breakfast, decided to try something new. I went into Angel Azul and saw looong line… Instantly intrigued, decided to check it out and boy am I glad I did! There is sucha varied selection of items, and they were all good!
I ordered humitas (like tamales but sweet), bread with chees and ham (YUM! the bread is slightly sweet, like a croissant), porkbelly (umm, what? pork belly for breakfast for $ 3? yes please!), arepas with cheese (good solid arepa), empanadas (can’t go wrong there) and eggs with chorizo breakfast (good, but the home fries are nothing to write home about). Can’t wait to go back and try some other new things.

SHAME ON ME and everyone else like me! I’m an Ecuadorian American raised in Jersey City Heights and managed to avoid this place for years. I’ve, unfortunately, been disappointed by little Ecuadorian restaurants that come and go so perhaps I’m slightly jaded now…
Thankfully, my wife brought me here this past Saturday morning and my heart fluttered with each sip of their so sweet ‘café con leche’ and sizable breakfast special, or ‘Desayuno Especial’.
DESAYUNO ESPECIAL ($ 5):
— Juevos (Two Eggs)
— Bistec (Steak)
— Pan (fresh bread)
— Papas Fritas (fries)
Throw in two cups of coffee and two larger pieces of Ecuadorian bread, and you have a delicious value breakfast for about $ 8. I will be coming here every weekend from now on if I can help it!

good food ! I went in the other day n went crazy wanting to try everything (it all looked good). so I spent maybe $ 12 but had lots of goodies to try. I really liked their croissant thing stuffed with ham n mozzarella. n gave with cheese … I would definitely go back. I just wish someone there spoke English. someone else here on Unilocal said they look at you weird if you don’t speak English, which is true ! very good food, bad service !

As part of our Latin American tour of the Heights, Bald One, Baby D, and I rolled into Angel Azul Bakery Café. Unassuming on the inside as it is on the outside, the smell of sweet pastries and café con leche was irresistible!
All types of Colombian and Ecuadorian confections are available here, from crème– and custard-​filled goodies to delights stuffed with cheese and guava. Even hot dog and chorizo-​stuffed wonders beamed at us from behind the counter. As he’s the sweet tooth in the family, Bald One chose a few baked breads for breakfasts (to take home), one cruller-​type item filled with a sweet custard, and of course, a café con leche. We enjoyed the coffee and pastry in the café, with futbol playing on the tele and a steady stream of Spanish-​speaking customers keeping things lively, with Baby D sleeping all the while in her stroller alongside the table.
Several friendly ladies stopped by and spoke to me in Spanish. Unfortunately, despite my black hair, lightly tanned skin, and ambiguous looks, I was not able to respond in kind. I gestured wildly and smiled, using monosyllabic cognates. From what I gathered, I think they thought the baby was cute and looked just like «Papa.»
The pastry was delicious and the coffee was milky sweet yet packed a caffeinated punch. The ambiance? I felt we could have been in Colombia. What the café lacked in décor, it more than made up for with the quality of its goods and the sunny service with a smile. I only wish I could understand what they were saying about my baby!

Top three things you should know about this bakery:
1. Employees barely speak English but the pointing usually works
2. They look at you a little strange when you don’t speak Spanish
3. The café con leche is extremely thick (yikes!) and the sweet bread is the most basic, best thing.
I am not Ecuadorian/​Colombian baked goods expert but I do appreciate their sweet bread the most. They sell a variety of things (sweet smoothies, sandwiches, South American goodies, etc.) but I tend to stick to less exciting things like basic sweet bread. I tried the coffee once and felt like I was eating coffee rather than drinking it– it was way too thick although I’m not sure why (maybe they use cream instead of milk).
The ladies working here are really sweet and always smile but tend to stare at my lover and I in a state of shock. Like GASP are those non-​hispanics? Oh, Jersey City Heights… you’re funny.

great Ecuadorian bakery, low prices compared to quality.
Pan con jamon y queso (bread with a stick of ham and cheese) in $ 1.25, in the morning is always fresh.
I also like the Maduro con queso (baked sweet plantain with white cheese along the middle).
